89 iroc z electrical problem
New to this forum... i bought an 89 camaro iroc z about a month ago and ive been having problems with the battery. i bought a new one and three days later it died just sitting. charged it up and threw it in and it fired right up but battery died again like before. i changed the fuel pump relay not knowing what drains the battery. i had the new battery in there and it died so i pulled it out and threw in a new one, the car turned on and stayed on even after disconnecting the battery. i threw in the old one hoping it would get charged up by the alternator but after tightening it and loosening the power cable i noticed it would lose power. when i disconnected the positive, the car just shut off. i also noticed that the car runs really good when i throw in the fresh battery but after revving it a little, it starts losing power, then after it just runs like if it isnt getting enough air or gas. i had a buddy of mine hook up his scanner to it but it says to check the connection and it wont read it.

sounds like you may have the alt wires switched or or unplugged or the alt is bad ... what does the gauge show when it is running?

Something may be putting a draw on the charging circuit. If you have a dmm I'll walk you through a 20 second test max.

Re: 89 iroc z electrical problem
your looking for #3 in the pie. I could sit and type this but this guys video has got it dead nuts.
#1 first and foremost your issue as you described is known as a current draw specifically pertaining to amperes.
watch the video see how many volts you have while measuring usage draw at you negative battery cable using your dmm leads.
you might be shocked at what you find. anything more than a few tenths is a nogo!!
I do this stuff for a living but on heavy earth moving equipment. Its all low voltage dc stuff with some ac work here and there.

did you check your fuses ... there is one that i think is marked c/h fan (it was in my gta anyway) and if that is bad it will not turn on the alt ... that was all that was wrong with mine
