Car: 1987 Trans am
Engine: 350 Vortec Stealth Ram
Transmission: T-5
Axle/Gears: 02 SS Torsen Zexel 3.42
Firing up Vortec HSR on stand

Looking to start my L31 on the stand before dropping into the car. I understand the starter power but how would i give power to the external tpi coil? Can I just supply 12v to it, spray some starter fluid in the TB and turn it over. I only want to run it for a brief few seconds. Probably won't even touch the throttle. Is this possible with this setup or wishful thinking? Thanks for any help.

Because it is a foolish idea to try and run an engine like that , even for a few seconds , without it being bolted into something with at least as much mass as your car . Worst case scenario ; engine starts , unseen vacuum leak sends RPMs into the stratosphere , and due to the torque of the sudden acceleration to high RPM the unsecured engine spins right off that little 50 pound stand and kills the guy standing next to it .

Do it right , bolt it in properly with every system hooked up and working (cooling , electrical , etc) and your first run can be far longer than a few seconds . Safer , too ....

Waste of a post if you had nothing to offer. Obviously I know the risk of starting it on a "little" 1000lb engine stand, but that wasn't my original question or concern.

Sorry I just saw this or I would have jumped in to help. Glad you figured it out. I too did an on-stand test start before dropping in the engine. If the stand is secure and not a cheapo stand then there isn't any more of a safety problem than if the engine was in the car.

You really shouldnt start them on a engine stand, they really are to tall and to narrow.
Instead build a engine run in stand and be a little safer ;-)
