86 iroc z wiring issue

I have wierd wiring problem, if anyone can help in would appreciate it. Whenever I pull my light switch out the horn goes off an when I honk my horn the lights turn on. It only happens when the brights are on so I'm guessing a wire in my dimmer switch and horn are connected some how

Re: 86 iroc z wiring issue

By pull light switch out, do you mean the dimmer switch on the column or the main light switch itself?

Looking at the wiring diagrams, it almost has to be wires switched between the horn relay and the headlamp circuit.

Alarming !

We are assuming you are not the OO.

Therefore you might have the remnents of a PO alarm system.

You might have to crawl under the dash (always fun) to see if any wiring mods have been performed.

They are recognizable from different types of splices the factory used, and might be as obvious as an alarm box still in there.

Happy Racing !

Re: Alarming !

Sorry, I've been busy and didn't see your reply. The wire to the horns from the horn relay is dark green. The wire from the headlamp dimmer switch to the high beam headlights is light green. This is the case on my 87 anyway. I can see some ill informed individual confusing the two.

For diagrams, you really need to get a good service manual for your car. Especially if you're doing electrical system work. I started to upload the electrical diag supplement of my Helms factory service manual to an online server for others to use, but then I got busy and that fell to the wayside. In my opinion, for anyone serious about doing their own work on a GM product, the Helms manual for that model is a must have. The books and a digital version are available on the Helms website. I paid $125 for mine 16 years ago, understand their about the same price today.

The All Data and Mitchell services here at the shop pale in comparison to the Helms book.

Re: 86 iroc z wiring issue

I take that back. The Helms manual I have is now available for $75 and includes the elec diag supplement. Guess they lowered the price. One thing I'll warn you of. Be sure to check the book carefully right away when you get it. Make sure that it's all complete with no omissions or errors. I never noticed til years later that mine is missing the entire section on the front suspension. It has the rear suspension section twice. Not a huge deal since I've been through these suspensions a hundred times. Still, should have caught that. I'm sure Helms would probably send me the missing pages or replace my book if I called them, even after 16 years.

I didn't realize the vehicle has been modified. Did you do the engine swap yourself? The Helms book is still valuable for all of the chassis electrical, as well as for making sense of the changes made during the motor swap.

Good you did your own work. Easier to make sense of as you do repairs in the future.
