Unraced Unused r7u Players Challenge 305 TPI Engine

This is a "leftover" replacement engine that the Players Challenge Camaro / Trans Am's used in the series from 90-92. It is still sealed and has never been installed. I bought it as a spare and as a "centerpiece" if you will.

I've had it for around 9 years and occasionally manually turned it over.

Open to offers here. I paid $4000 for it.

Very Very COOL,
Out of curiosity, what are the spec's on that engine ?. compression ratio, heads , horse power ?.

Surprised to see the manifolds, would a race car not use headers or would they have to run "factory" spec's ?

Re: Unraced Unused r7u Players Challenge 305 TPI Engine

theres a few rumours as to what the engines were. The most realistic is that they pulled say 200 off the assembly line and sealed them all. They were then designated "r7u" engines. Some say they were all balance. others say all dynoed. I don'tknow forsure. All Iknow is the cars all had to be 100% stock. They allowed for some minor things here and there but each car wasinspected before every race. So headers etc were not an option

Got a pic of the vin pad?
Just curious. Not in the market for a piece of history.

On the pass side where the water pump bolts to the block, its on the same surface the head is bolted to.

interesting I had no idea. I have 2 of these engines I wonder what they'd have on there. I wonder if they're blank due to the fact they were never installed into cars?

Re: Unraced Unused r7u Players Challenge 305 TPI Engine

That is a cool piece, those TPI engines nice looking units, even today I think they look futuristic. I think the drawback is the air pump and the associated plumbing.
Anyway good luck with the sale, if it were mine I think I would start at $4k? Unless you think its worth more?

Thanks for posting the pics and good luck with the sale.

With the smooth throttle plate, black valvecovers and the way the oil pan looks, I'd bet this had the powdered metal rods/LT1 pistons in it like some of the other late 92 engines I've opened up..

Come on lotto

What's odd is all late '92 engines I've seen with the black valve covers had the textured vette runners too, they are smooth on this one. Very cool.

Can't many engines so new they still have the factory hook/bracket for installing!! Hard to see how it's attached.

Yep free shipping! I figure if someone wants it as badly as i did when I bought it it would be nice to include it. It willl probably be about $400

Holding off on listing the r7u as Ive been talking to Bruce @ hawksthirdgen about it. He is interested so out of respect Im going to hold off. I hope he takes it because i know it would be in good hands. I had a similar smaller business here in Vancouver Canada and thats how my love of thirdgens really blew up!

Re: Unraced Unused r7u Players Challenge 305 TPI Engine

I would think the shipping would end up being more than $400. Seems like a good deal to me. I wouldn't mind seeing some pics of the R7U car. There was a time I used to see a fair amount of them advertised in Southern Ontario. Not so much anymore. Be nice to see it go to a good home.
