wtb 23-25 mm rear sway bar
I want to replace my dinky rear sway bar on my base Firebird.
I found a nice 34 front sway bar in the boneyard for $20, but no luck on a rear.
I see a 23mm on fleabay for $95 shipped. is that the going price? or too high?
anybody here have a 23, 24, or 25mm for sale?
shipping zip code is 63390

Re: wtb 23-25 mm rear sway bar
Prices vary a lot depending on where you look. Ebay is going to be on the higher end but you pay for the convenience of buying it when you want. They also include a bunch of extra fees that ends up going back to the buyer in higher costs. Local availability varies as well which affects what people will pay. If you look around you should be able to find something cheaper. When I had 3-4 34mm sets I was selling them for $40-$60/set, now I'm down to one so I'm selling that set for $100 plus shipping. I know of 36mm sets selling for over $200.
Some of the 34mm front bars came with 21mm rears. I have a spare one of those w/out bushings/bracket but it's probably not worth the shipping cost. I'd want $20 plus shipping for it. Has light surface rust too.
In case you're wondering on bar sizes:

If this is a street car, you may want the smaller rear bar with the big front bar. The large rear bar causes the rear of the car to "hop" sideways while doing spirited cornering and you hit a bump.

Re: wtb 23-25 mm rear sway bar
ThirdGens were designed to UNDERSTEER. (AKA "push") Why; because It's easier for any common driver to gain control if the car is pushing.... ( Just imagine if these things were designed to be "loose" in the corners !! )
Installing the largest rear sway bar possible should help to 'even off' the natural tendency of the front end to "push" thru the corners. The BEST place to install poly bushings in a Thirdgen is the rear sway bar and the rear bar end-links. This change alone is like adding a 20-25% larger rear sway and the response from them while driving is quicker since there's no 'give' like factory rubber bushings.
IMO - ALWAYS install the biggest rear bar possible on your Thirdgen.

Re: wtb 23-25 mm rear sway bar
Nope, not for me, all my cars are WS6 and have the big front/ rear bar. I installed the smaller rear bars on them.
I Use the BiG front bar with the small rear bar on the street. Its easier to handle on the expansion joints an bumps
If you are going to a super flat track/ compition, install the large rear bar. The large rear bar is overkill esp on crappy roads.

Re: wtb 23-25 mm rear sway bar
thanks for replys guys!
being I have a 89 2.8 stock firebird, better hp traction is definetly not a concern, lol!
but what I'm trying to accomplish is stiffen up the body roll on the curves on some of the back roads here where I live.
I installed new shocks when I bought it several months ago, and I also installed rear tubular lower control amrs with poly/greaseable bushings. I honestly couldn't tell any differance with body lean in the curves with the tube lowers, but I know it had to make some differance over the stamped stockers.
I remember how much of a differance just going from a 30mm solid front and no sway bar in the rear, to a 34mm hollow and adding a rear bar, to a 78-87 buick regal makes, with decreasing body roll. Its a pretty big improvement.
I do agree with the hitting bumps and the car sliding thing. I learned right away that the best way to keep the car from losing traction and keep my front-end alignment true, is to watch the condition of the pavement religiously. I avoid every crack, bump, pothole, ledge, gravel, etc... at all reasonable cost.
granted, I'm still running the 15x7 stock wheels and tire size, so I know I could make some improvement by going to a gta wheel, which is next on my list.
I think what I'm going to do is just install the front bar and drive the car for a bit. Then install the rear and compare the differance.
