new toy 92 with 403 old 12.5 in the 1/4

it's an engine swap so thought this would be the catorgory to put it in. it's a 403 .030 over, stock heads, stock manifolds, edl performer intake, holley 750 carb, built th350, hust quicksilver slap stick, 3:73 true posi rear. it did the 1/4 in 12.5 and smoked a new cobra mustang in the process. i have an rpm intake and headers to put on it in the next couple of weeks. it's getting painted black the first week of feb.

That is awesome!

Make sure you post your pics of the header swap. What headers are you gonna use? I couldn't get mine to fit!

Re: new toy 92 with 403 old 12.5 in the 1/4

headers arnt that bad to put on, its more fun getting the old stuff off honestly.. nice car.. looks like somethings buring under it in the first pic.. are you still running manifolds? cant tell too much from your pic.. what year is it by the way? It has the 91-92 gfx on the side and a 90 or earlier on the front..

Re: new toy 92 with 403 old 12.5 in the 1/4

ya i'm still running the manifolds. when i swap to the headers i need to pull the heads and put on new head gaskits, thats the smoke coming from the exhaust. pretty sure i'm getting some coolant leakage and since i'm switching to a rpm intake i might take the heads up and get em port matched. thanks for the response.

oh did'nt answer you're question. it's a 92, ya the guy i got it from could'nt find the correct ground affect so he threw that one on if anyone has one they want to get rid of before feb when i take it to get it painted i'd be interested in buying it

Re: new toy 92 with 403 old 12.5 in the 1/4

I don't have any of my Olds powered 3rd gens anymore. I'm down to one V6 car that is getting ready for a Buick transplant.

Both times I ran a 350 Olds V8 I had to run manifolds. The 78-87 Cutlass headers wouldn't fit at all. The 79 Trans Am headers were close, but wouldn't go. I think those may have been able to be modified to run but I didn't do it. I just used a big set of 455 manifolds and ported them the best I could. I ran a custom 2 into 1 y-pipe and then hooked up the cat-back like factory.

Be sure to document what happens with those headers!

You know, using an Olds 455 crank in a 403 block, you can have something like a 515ci Olds?

Re: new toy 92 with 403 old 12.5 in the 1/4

ya the headers are starting to scare me. the pass side i dont think will be an issue, but the drivers side look pretty tight theres a race shop in the area maybe i'll check em out and see what they have to offer. and swapping out the crank.... maybe down the road. for now it's fast enough. i would like to go all forged eventually maybe at that time i'll look into a diff crank. thanks for the responses guys.

The block doesn't allow it because it's not thick enough in the mains area. Too much stress.

You can run that crank in a diesel block because they made it with the same crank main dimensions as the big block. You can only overbore to 4.25, though, so you end up somewhere near 500 inches but not 515...

Re: new toy 92 with 403 old 12.5 in the 1/4

ya i'v talked to mondellos and they kinda said the same thing. he told me i'm going to have about 470hp with the way i'm going. and that would be about max. i'm probably a little under 400hp right now, i cant wait to finish it. end of this month paint and hopefully end of next month i should have enough to take it in and have the motor work done. i'm thinking about swaping to forged. anyway thanks for the input guys talking about this stuff is allways fun

Re: new toy 92 with 403 old 12.5 in the 1/4

The first thing any 403 needs for an upgrade is cylinder heads. You need some "C" castings from an early big block. That will get you off and running. You can match the performer RPM ports to those heads and really take off.

Re: new toy 92 with 403 old 12.5 in the 1/4

ya heads are last on my list. i'm going with the edlebrock heads(1600$) probably by the end of summer. i have to see what pistons i have in there now as well. compresion being the isue with these motor. the motor i have really screams so i'm thinking i might have doamed pistons in there plus it would be good to know anyway before i sink any money into any set of heads. my goal is to get into the 11's. at 12.5 with what i have now i dont think it will take much more to achieve that. anyway thanks for the response.
