Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap

Keep up the good work. FYI, your hood hinges will fold down if you remove the hood struts, giving you more room to work.

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap

I at the time was under the impression if it had a full latching setup it didnt need them but I proved that wrong I was going around 140 150 when it flew off came clean apart and went about 200 ft up in the air and landed on the side of the road luckily and had almost no damage at all to the top half the bottom was still latched and on the car we even rebonded and smoothed the underside so you would think it would have been stronger

ok, so I'm on the other base.... might be why I never saw you.

I had only seen Chris' car (the Orange 91 Z28 with the LS6, which I believe he sold and don't know what happen to the car after that, but was also in GM HighTech) once. I was in my beat-up stock 91 Z and he came a pulled on me going north on 85 one day. I later found the car in the magazine and found he was a member of this forum and messaged him. Went by Hartattack I think.... beautiful car.

ok sorry for thread jacking.... back to the good stuff.

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap

Time to tune it with EFI Live. Personally I would of done a Cummins, but the Dmax are light and pretty quick.

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap

the cummins is alot heavier and larger and less power than a dmax and at least this way im keeping it GM

from what ive been seeing alot lately is 80 to 120k cummins shelling out and taking dumps happened to a guy i work with a few years ago and to a friend last week 80 k something internal just came apart and it was stock regular use and he is a diesel mechanic

definately using EFI LIVE too getting a V2 setup

i think the diesle will. with as much torque as it takes to push a truck consider than a thirdgen is almost 1000 or so pounds lighter, so that diesel shouldnt have any issue pushing that car quickly with a light foot

LOL! Oh, I don't doubt your Duramax Camaro will get better mileage than my Ecotec-swapped Camaro.

Mine will beat you in handling, though.

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap

Looks good so far Tyler! It's a great plan that I decided to not do.. Ah well you will be the first! LBZ would have been the best to start with but they can all handle big boost which means big power! Goodluck I'll be watching.

My Inline 6 swap is going good. turbo hot side is 95% done and its ready to get dropped back in the car for exhaust/wiring, etc, etc,etc,etccccc..

Tyler, are you under the impression that DMaxs come in Fords?

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap

no? that would be a powerstroke. we got off topic stating other fascinating builds that are out of the box, i referred to people always throwing a sbc in mustangs but have never seen a ford powerplant in a chevy, then you made the assumption i though a duramax was part of the ford line. im both a thirdgen fan and a mudder i know my gas and diesel engines

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap

OK, I didn't mean anything by it. Just kinda sounded that way.

Adam, this is gonna be awesome, always wanted to do one, but I've never come by a DMax cheap enough. You may have said, but what are your front suspension plans?

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap

ford does come with cummins though, ford 'owns' a series of the cummins from what i heard but not if thats correct, and alot of people do cummins swaps in fords anyways. pretty sad that ford would actually want one of their trucks rolling off the line with a cummins

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap

Ford has the powerstroke and that is along the lines or in partner with international the new powerstroke is all ford design I believe Cummins are in Dodges in the rams and the duramax was in partnership with izuzu but the newest duramax is more gm design to take the rights from izuzu because toyota has stock in izuzu and they didnt want toyota getting rights to the duramax

In my opinion I love the duramaxs the most and they are very well proven the cummins are good motors but its OLD OLD tech and thats why they are the most underpowered trucks out there and right now nothing can touch a duramaxs milage and power ford did a reprogram and so did dodge and the duramaxs are still kicking thier asses

I dont hate ford I own a edge for my wife and its an awsome car but when it comes to buying a real vehicle or truck I only get GM

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap

Back in the early 90′s, Ford bought less than 15% of outstanding Cummins stock. Many companies buy into other products to add diversity, corner a market, or form an alliance. In 1997, Cummins repurchased all stock previously owned by Ford, and no Ford management is now on the Cummins board of directors. Since 1998 in the pickup market, Cummins B engines are exclusively contracted to Chrysler, an arrangement that both companies are eager to continue. Ford medium duty (class 6 and 7) and heavy duty (class trucks are available with Cummins B engines.
Also, I guess Cummins is making a deal with a “unknown” automaker to put there engine into another vehicle besides the Dodge Ram…
there problem solved

with 1300lbs/tq how go you plan on keeping car from twisting i know ties and maybe a cage helps but 1300 is alot

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap

I am building my own subframe connectors that will be like the inner and out kits combined with a whole lot more bracing I will be tieing the 6 point cage to the subframe connectors directly and I am going with coil over shocks up front and doing my own K member and will be boxing in the frame rails where the spring pockets used to be I will be out of town this weekend but will be starting the front end next week hopefully

I am debating right now weather to do a motor plate or mounts I would like to do a motor plate but there isnt much mounting area on the front of a duramax to plate up to
