Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap
most dont put ford motors because they arent the best out there when a stock GM motor can achieve 1000 plus hp why would you go with something else

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap
I recently picked up a 04.5 crew cab 4X4 with the ZF6 speed, it's bone stock. It has the same hp as my LS1 and almost twice the tq. I wasn't even half way home for the first time with the truck when the thought of stuffing that diesel into my car crossed my mind. It pushes that big truck around pretty good. That is a very interesting project you have on your hands, good luck with it.

You do not want it 1st gear is a granny gear and a good clutch is expensive.

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap
lol, 1300lb-ft at like no rpm... what do you need a tranny for? Real world you're going to want as low a rear gear in it as you can find to make this thing fun on the road. Heck, my cummins w 4.10's and 36's will burn the tires from a 25mph roll at 7800# (951lb-ft do help a little ), but gets kind of buzzy and unhappy over 85mph.
the dmax is pretty much the truck diesel of choice for car swaps, it's the only one that's really small enough to work well in most chassis. All the cummins talk here is pretty much a non starter, a 6bt is bigger and heavier than the whole front end of that camaro. OTOH, if you wanted to do a 4bt (cummins used in things like bread delivery trucks) that would be pretty interesting and smalle enough to work.
can't wait to see this thing rolling, what are you planning for fuel delivery? the lift pump assembly that I'm running on my cummis is huge, that would be a bigger packaging problem than getting the dmax in the engine bay.

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap
you can't make make anything fit into anything... the cummins is physically larger than all the room available and more than 2x the weight of a small block. The monti on youtube is fairly unique, an early 70's monti has a fan shroud that's close to 2 feet long, you could fit 2 big blocks in a row under their hood. To make that much room in an f-body you'd have to set the firewall back so far that you'd be sitting in the back seat.

This is a real head scratcher for me but i think its very interesting, if i had the money i would opt for a caterpillar engine, i think they got a ton of power straight out the box.

This is crazy. But If you are going to do a swap why not a duramax. great power and great fuel mileage. I Wouldnt be surprised if you got 40 + mpg if you gear it to do that

It might fit.... Between the wheel centerlines that is. The smallest CAT straight 6 is something like 6.6+ L with an intercooler & aftercooler for the turbo and is so large that it constitutes about 20% of the weight of a 12 metric ton excavator.

got some stuff done today cleaned the garage and worked on the jig for the Kmember still waiting on DOM tubing
half way through my bandsaw broke so I had to use the cut off wheel for the few remaining cuts I hate them because I have had discs come apart on me
but all in all got some good welds for a temp fixture lol

good job man i hope this works out for you.
i dreamed about this along time ago when i saw a chevelle with a dmax in a magazine, but i wanted to do a ford 6.0 in a fox body musthing but that engine is huge.ford was planning to make a smaller v6 diesel but scrapped it for the ecoboost. which is something ive been giving thought into swapping into a third gen....or an audi/vw v6 tdi.

I am going to try and get alot knocked out next week I am still waiting on tubing I think the shop in town is just a bunch of Aholes and I will end up procuring it myself
If I get time in class or decide to I will be heading home on the weekends but if anything I will be able to compile parts while I am gone because money is the biggest limiting factor right now with the holidays spare cash goes to presents and stuff
I told the wife for christmas just let me shop online for alittle and to not get me anything becuase I know what I want and need

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap
I'm a a duramax tech and huge fan of them. Lb7's are more prone to injector failure than lly and later. Nothing to fear or worry over. And yes, lb7s do have stronger pistons. I run an lly with Efi live with a dsp5 switch. 225,000 miles so far. Do yourself a favor and buy a new torque converter for your trans. You actually want a lower stall converter for your duramax. Helps control of line jump and keeps tranny temps down. I went with a rev Max torque converter. Call them, honest, great guys. They custom build and have decades of experience. (I run a stage V billet series). MAKE SURE you put in the biggest radiator you can fit. Duramaxes don't like heat. (Put in auxiliary cooler) put a new water pump on while its out also. (MUCH EASIER). Try to fit 4" exhaust in if you're gonna run Efi live. (I went with duramaxtuner.com for my Efi live).

No I just stumbled on this site a few months back researching if anyone has done a full nose flip. I am going to graft the viper hood into the cowl hood and bond it with a one piece nose and fender. I just started the tear down of the z. The only parts I am retaining are the back glass. The rest of the stuff is up for sale. So if anyone needs some original equip, let me know.

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap
they are at least half the weight maybe just alittle more half but the pair feels about the same as one stocker
I can make it with the perches pretty easy but you can get coilovers for around 190 go to QA1s site you can buy the springs needle bearings and the perches with ajustment jam nuts for half of the cheapest you can find online

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap
I have the jigs built and the plans to a buddy with a waterjet I would consider making a few after they get tested and I trust my mig welds but anything I would put out would be tig welded

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap
nothing is wrong with them I have 100% trust in my welds and most you buy from companys are mig welded too
Tig is a better weld and they look damn good too
I might make some sets after I test these out I am also doing the same for a 4th gen in Feb just picked up a metal lathe too just have to figure where to put it
