V6 v belt system on a v8
I went to the junkyard today search of a v8 setup and I came acrossed an 87 gta with v belts and they look just the same as my v6 system on my car now, had anyone actually looked and seen if this would work? I realize I'd need a v8 water pump but everything else looks like it will work.

Yes, the V8 system will work as long as you use the water pump that matches the pulley system and year.
Pay attention to the low hanging stuff since the nose of your 4.3V6 will be closer to the crossmember than the V8 was.

Oops just realized you are running a 2.8. All bets are off.
At first I thought you were the guy who dropped in the 4.3. My mistake and my apologies. You need 2.8 or 3.1 stuff to make that work.

why won't it work though? I mean with all the mounting points, pulleys, and brackets the same you would think the would fit, is there any reason they wouldnt. And to verify I'm wanting to take my v6 system and put it on my 96 Vortec motor

I'm sure, as new as these cars are, and as dumb as everyone is that's ever had one, and since no one that's ever had one of those POS 6-cyl motors has ever tried to get rid of it and downgrade to a V8, that the idea has never occurred to a single soul before. You're the first!!
Go try to bolt it up. Come back and tell us if it worked.

Re: V6 v belt system on a v8
If you are planning on bolting the V8 accessory drive and accessories to a 4.3V6, you have a chance of it bolting on.
The 2.8 stuff has the bracketry all wrong. The bolt spacing for the brackets are different on the fronts of the heads and the depth from the center face of the crank pulley to the face of each head are different than the V8. From what I know, the 4.3 V6 uses the same dimensions that the old Chevy small block uses.
As I said before, you may still have an issue near the crossmember so measure carefully.

Re: V6 v belt system on a v8
I don't think it matters, V-belt or serpentine. You should be able to use all the accessories themselves, but you will need original V8 3rd gen bracketry to bolt those accessories to a later Vortec 350. If you use generic small block chevy brackets from a truck some of them may not clear the hood. Ditto with some cars. You are guaranteed a fit by using 3rd gen brackets. It also matters what YEAR 3rd gen brackets you use, since sometimes on the V8 you get the AC on the left and sometimes its on the right. You'll want to get the brackets to match where your AC is on the 2.8 engine so that the compressor can bolt up and the lines are the right length. If you're ultra cheap like I am, anyway.
Sorry for the confusion I may have caused. I just started college as an old man and my eggs are really getting scrambled hahahah!

Re: V6 v belt system on a v8
Are the pulleys the same? I don't think the junkyard is understanding that I wanted them to pull the v8 pulleys, brackets, and get all the bolts. They sent me a picture earlier of all the stuff and I'm seeing the brackets but they look weird, a pulley that looks like a harmonic balancer pulley and a bag of bolts. I'm trying to explain now that I needed all the pulleys aswell

I think the accessory pulleys from your V6 will be fine even if they aren't exactly the same diameter. The crank pulley and water pump pulley are needed from the V8 for sure, the others I think will swap.
