Looking for some advice... ls1 donor car.
I had intended to do a crate motor with aftermarket FI and. Lt1 t56. I have been prepping the engine bay. I also need to do an electric fan setup, and had intended to eventually do 4th gen brakes and wheels.
I have an opportunity for a 98 ls1 w/ 6-speed with 120kdriving car, and apparently a replaced engine with much less. I got him in the $3800 range.
I am a little worried about reading about 98 pcm and all the sensors being an oddball. Is it worth it for this and the donor parts associated with the car? Brakes/rear end/power booster/brake master/tank/rezovoirs/electric fans. And the obvious motor/tranny. As a good price for a swap?

The 98 PCM can be easily swapped for a 411 pcm, you just need to move a few wires in the connectors. You can easily sell the 98 PCM.
The only sensor different on a 98 is the temp sensor. It's a 3 wire, 2 to the PCM and one for a gauge. That's the best sensor for a swap so that you can run the stock temp gauge.
There are some reasons that 98s are the least desirable, which makes them sell for less, but $3800 doesn't sound bad. Depending on the condition of the rest of the car you could get a fair amount of money back.
In the early LS1s the rods aren't as strong and the back of the block doesn't connect the two oil galleys. It's common practice to carve the block between the two when the engine is apart.
The heads have perimeter bolt valve covers, but aren't really any worse than the 99-02 heads as far as flow.
I bought a 98 Camaro 6 speed with broken rods for $1800. I got lucky to get it so cheap, and that it had a bunch of aftermarket stuff. I kept the engine and trans and and parted out the rest. I ended up making a couple hundred and still have the trans and moved all the exterior engine stuff to a 6.0 long block. They are going in my 69 Firebird.
So I'd say look at what you'd keep vs what those parts would add up to individually minus the stuff you'd sell and decide if his price is good enough.

Rest of the car is rough.... I might get something for the hood and grill.... I think I need to get a price out of nic-nack stuff like like the rear/coolant/brakes... etc....
