Re: Jegs
Are you looking at the low compression 350? I recently bought a L31r crate engine through a Chevrolet dealer that had them listed on eBay for a better price than jegs or summit.

Re: Jegs
I haven't got that far. I am looking for suggestions. My car is in good shape except for the hi km on engine. I don't want a power house that will rip the car apart. I used to have a 1964 short box step side chev with a 327. That would use to much fuel.
I want something with reasonable horse power and fuel economy. I am getting about 23 mpg right now

Re: Jegs
If you want a reliable engine with great gas mileage and aren't worried about more power then I would get the 305 rebuilt or buy the Vortec L30 305 from Jegs for less than 2k. The Vortec will only have a few differences mainly the intake but there are cheap ways around that and at 230HP its a big jump from what you had.

I want to get rid of the smog pump and all that garbage. Is it worth it keep it a TBI or is easier to just go to a carburetor. I like the tbi when it is running right.
Do many people rebuild a 305 most do a swap. The 305 with a few mods would have lots of hp I think.

Most people swap to a 350, you can get a vortec motor and run the TBI. How you do it depends on what emissions you have to pass in your home town. Personally if I were to buy a crate 5.7L motor I would buy a roller block vortec 350

Re: Jegs
I have been down the 305 TBI to CARB road (by choice - no regrets )...everything I experienced is here including all p/ns etc https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/carb...s-305-tbi.html ...as far as modifying the 305 for "lots of hp" you kind of have your work cut out for you - 305s dont really lend themselves to "lots of hp" easily - although it can and is done here by a few ....my opinion after modding my 305 is go with a simple crate 350 for a myriad of reasons, $$ , reuse of parts down the road , dime a dozen parts, resale value etc....good luck.
