Cheap 7400 install, every detail
So, pics will follow, but first, I got an 86 Camaro and a 98 454.
You want the 96-00 Vortex 7400 version for several good reasons, including the large oval intake ports, the cast valve covers that reduce leaks, the roller lifters, the one piece rear main seal that resists leaks better, especially with synthetic oils, and the smaller chambers for a decent 9:1 static compression.
But with these, there is no provision for a mechanical fuel pump, the oil pan situation is more of a hassle, and so is the oil filter situation. Filter first. The blocks destined for K3500s were machined differently than the ones for C3500s, and making the K3500 version work just isn't happening without a lot of costly, difficult, unnecessary fabrication work. So the K3500 version I got 3 years ago is in a C65 dump truck. I now have the C3500 version, problem solved.
With the oilpan, neither version fits, you can either mod the one you get, or spend over 200 on the GMPP one. I will be cutting and welding the C3500 pan to use a Chevelle screen.
The next issue is the accessories, and the cheapest option is to just adapt the C3500 stuff. But I want a short aluminum water pump, not a long iron pump.
You can call Summit or Jegs for a name brand pump, like the Weiand for 110, but it is still Chinese, or you can choose a GMB 1302981HP aluminum short for a 67 Camaro 396 from RockAuto for 80.
Then it needs pulleys, and a lot of online research found the chrome stuff cheaper than the black painted stuff. Why? So I generally prefer Summit over Jegs, and Summit offers Spectre chrome double v-groove, 4458 upper for 46, 4468 lower for 40.
I get my bolts from a local hardware store whenever possible. Figure less than a dollar per bolt, including washers and lockwashers.
Then it needs alternator brackets, Spectre makes an upper, 4720, for 19, but the lower, a TransDapt 9502 for 53, is for Mark IV timing covers, so it will probably need to be altered.

Just typed that much more again, but it didn't post, so now I'm angry. More later.

Did you use the less than symbol? I have noticed when I use that the rest gets cut off

Thanks guys.
I will note the size, length, grade, and thread pitch of any odd bolts required along the way.
Right now my 454 is partly apart, one cylinder needs a little light honing, the rings need gasped for future boost, and the heads need ported.
I will be mounting it with the clamshells off the 305 my car was built with, nothing special there.
And I will be using the 700R4 and torque converter from the 305 for now, I have a 4L80E and an idea for full manual shift wiring with no costly kit.
But I need it moving under its own power as soon as possible, at minimum practical cost.
I will be running an Edelbrock Yorker 2, and I have a 1406 Edelbrock car until I upgrade the Cam.
First I need to use a degree wheel to determine the real LSA and the real IC of the stock L29 Cam. The GMPP 454HO HR Cam is a direct Bolt in, at about 60% the cost of Howards or Comp, but since I plan a blow through turbo, I want something milder.

I've been researching exhaust manifolds, and shorty headers. I'm planning to rear-turbo this, so I'm leaning toward manifolds.

Re: Cheap 7400 install, every detail
If you're searching old threads in here, The Devastaror used Dorman 159 and 161 exhaust manifolds, but after looking at all of Dorman's offerings, the 268 looks better than the 161.
If you're going for conventional, the 159 and 268 combo looks useable, but if you plan to turn them around for front turbocharging, the 268 should be matched with a 267.
Now, I plan to hunt used ones first, and the 159 came on the driver side of 73-87 C30s, the other 2 came on '88-'95 C3500s.
