Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

Go with the Heddmans for sure! I just installed Hooker ceramic coated hedders and y pipe on my 86 Iroc and nothing fit proper! I had to beat/dent 3 tubes on the hedder just to get the bolts in the flange holes they were so bad and the y pipe was off center by 11/16" from bolting up! I had to measure the y pipe and take it to my fab guy cut it in half and take 11/16" out of the middle for it to fit! Hooker sucks, it was my first time using them and for $700 total I will be going back to heddmans stuff. Not to mention the "ball and socket" flanges from heddman never leak and don't even use a gasket! Good luck man!

Thanks for the info. I am going with the Hedman 1n5/8# for now, the Hedman 1n3/4" when I put new motor in. What I was askin is it possible to run dual exhaust, similar to what I had on my 2nd gen. Camaro. I just got instructions from Summit on the Dynamax 2n1/4" dual exhaust kit. That is not what I nd in mind, I'm glad I didn' t waste my money on that kit. I really haven't looked under the car a whole lot yet, so I really don't know how much room there is. Thanks

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

I have hooker headers on my Camaro. Corvette style and they fit just fine! I am sorry you had trouble with yours, but, I have had no fitment issues whatsoever. The y-pipe fit great although we did end up cutting the end off and welding a flange to it to bolt up to my converter. Again no troubles. On top of that I got them JET-HOT Coated and they look outstanding! It also cut my engine bay temps in almost half!!! Their is awesome!

YES, there is a system for dual exhaust for a thirdgen f-body. I have an article in one of my magazines where they did it on a Trans Am. They used long tube headers and a corvettes style exhaust where the pipes ran along underneath the driveshaft. I will look it up and post the info on the artcile as soon as possible. It was either Super Chevy OR Camaro Performers OR GM HighTech Performance.

Through talking with lots of long time mechanics and exhaust fabricators, this seems to be the only way to do it. Ive been told by numerous guys that it just doesn't work. Although I thought I saw once that 1LE Camaro's had TRUE dual exhaust with four converters.

Anyway... these are just my thoughts based on experience and research. I will post the article ASAP. Look forward to hearing your thoughts!

It seems to me the only advantage the SLP's have are they are stainless steel, but that doesnt matter if you get the headers coated. The Hookers have 1 5/8 inch primaries which are just fine for anything making less than the 450 hp range. The hookers also have a 3 inch collector which does neck down to a tiny 1.9 inches at the ball flange, but that problem can easily be fixed by opening that up to the ID of the y pipe. The SLP's only have a 2 1/2 inch collector that necks down inside. I have heard many horror stories about the SLP's fitment and a lot of work needs to be done for them to fit right, whereas the hookers fit nicely with no modifications. Now comes the sweetness of the 2055's; the awesome y pipe! The hooker y pipe is by far the best y pipe available for the third gen f body, it is a work of art! It has nice 2 1/2 inch mandrel bent pipes that come together in an awesome 3 inch collector all the way to where the cat mates to the y pipe compared to the SLP y pipe that only has 2 1/4 piping.. The hooker y pipe doesnt stick out in the wheel well like the SLP y pipe does either. Now another strength of the hookers are they are wayyyyyyyyy cheaper than the inferior SLP's. I have done extensive research on all the brands of headers and have found that the Hooker 2055 headers are by far the best headers available!

SLP's are better than Hookers. You can not get 1 3/4in tubes in no other shorty brand but SLP's. The only set of headers that are better than SLP is Dyno Don's. His headers are 1 3/4in tubes with dual 2 1/2in cat and 2 1/2in y-pipe into 3in cat.
These are SLP

is it worth getting the dual cats, my main concern is if I get them will it be difficult to get headers installed later. How I am supposed to keep the air tubes if all the headers do not have the holes for them?

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

When I bought mine it had Hooker headers with what looked like a homemade 3 inch straight thru exhaust, so you know it sounded loud. I put a hi flow cat on it and magnaflow cat back, but it dulled the sound way too much. So I went with a flowmaster 44 which is the loudest street leagl muffler they make and 2.5 inch pipes. It is almost as loud as it was with the straight thru exhaust but now is legal. I think SLP with its ludmouth exhaust is the closest thing. But, I don't know if they consider resonators as mufflers.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

have any of you guys noticed the super small collectors on the hooker 2055's?? Not sure if they were changed or not but the diameter of the hole at the collector "ball" flange was only 1.94" on my setup!!! This was back in 05-06. Thats good for smaller milder motors but not something with decent amount of horsepower.

I was able to port that setup to 2.25" comfortably and still have good seal to the ball/socket flange.

Also, if you guys use larger heads like AFR 195's with the larger exhaust ports, the hooker 2055's will not cover the port. 1 5/8" is too small. In fact anyones 1 5/8" is to small. Some argue this doesnt really matter since most of the exhaust stream comes out the center of the port, but in chasing every last pony, I'd want a header that covers the port and leaves NO step in the exhaust path.

Hooker Y pipe is fine but hung alittle lower than I would have liked.

Dyno don's are gorgeous and proven to make power on even wild setups. Not much if any loss on power compared to longtubes. They are likely the best header for these cars for most street/strip builds when you factor in fitment, cost, power potential, and clearance.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

I have a 1982 z28 with a 350 instead of a 305 (doesn't matter anyways) but i'm having an exhaust problem. I just have two straight pipes leading to flowmasters and i'm having a terrible clearance problem. I want to replace the whole system and i'm not sure what kind of headers to get or if I should go back to manifolds. I'm also not sure what kind of muffler(s) to put on it as well. the most important thing to me is the distance between the ground and the exhaust system itself. If I have to sacrifice some rumble thats fine with me but if someone could please help me out with this it would be appreciated. It does have a carb by the way. Thanks.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

My brother just ditched his stock exhaust and got Hooker 2055 Headers. They woke his car right up. So that being said, don't go back to stock manifolds! They are the biggest bottle neck out cars have. I am saving up for Dyno Don's headers. Everyone seems to love them and his service.
I bought the magnaflow dirrect fit dual cat system for my car and it goes in the stock locations really tight up to the body. I'm really really happy with it.
My brother bought the American thunder cat back system for a 1991 Camaro. and I am jealous of it. Went in really easily and sounds really really good. Its quiet enough at cruising rpms and really opens up when you hop on it.

Hopefully this helps you get started.

Hooker 2210s for SBC/LT, Hawks for LSX.

While the Hooker 2210s are the best performance the Hedman 68460s are better in clearance.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

I have mac's to a highflow cat directly to a flow master resonater connected to the stock over the axle pipe to 40 series flowmaster single in dual out.

Sounds mean and awsome

any advice

My idea's
a) lose the stock over the axle pipe for somthing better
b) lose the muffler (dump behind passanger rear tire)
c) lose a and b (pipe out in front of rear passenger
e) just leave it
d) a possible better idea

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

What size primary tubes should I have on a 406cid small block? The headers will be long tubes and the motor makes about 400 to 450hp. I might shoot 100hp to it in the future.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

Anyone tryed the Hooker Headers 2460-2HKR?
Runing the dynomax shorty headers (out of production) with a fully custom made exhaust system, made a custom y-pipe over to the oval nascar pipes to save som clearence. Need some new headers in stainless steel like the rest of the exhaust, and don't want to build a new y-pipe, it was a pain! Wondering if anyone had a clue if there are som headers out there that would fit right in?

Longtubes vs shorties? I run shorties on my 4x4 trucks but longtubes would be better for my F-Body application? Hedman 68460s bolt on without modifications to any components? Spark plug angles?

I wonder is it worth it getting, long tube headers or since I live in california is it better if I get smog legal shorty headers since they seem to be the only type to be smog legal. how much better do long tubes flow.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

I have a question, will these headers (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HED-68470/) work well with this Y-pipe (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HED-17478/)? And will they bolt up to the existing exhaust on my 86 z28

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

Sorry for jumping into this thread, but could someone tell me what shape gaskets I need for a stock 1985 TPI 305? I am putting on some headers and want to order copper gaskets, but I am not sure if I need round, square or oblong ones and the part store has no clue. I just wanted to get the gaskets before I rip my Camaro apart. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

I have the stock exhaust on my 87 GTA, I am looking at the Cat-back Magnaflow 3", When listening to them on youtube they kind of all sound different depending on the camera. I was just wondering if there is a big difference between the stock exhaust and the magnaflow. I find the stock exhaust a bit quiet. Thanks.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

I need help! I recently changed my engine and upgrade the exhaust by removing the stock exhaust manifold for Headman Headers. I have had nothing but trouble ever since!!! they will not stay tight, keep coming loose and of course its ussually the right side that loosens up. i have replace the bolts and used lock tight. this will be my fourth time with less than 2000 mile on the new engine that i have to tighten these bolts. Does anyone have any recommendations? otherwise i an removing these pipes and going back to original.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

from what i have learned you will need to look at the head exhaust ports to see if they are round or square. also your headers are most likely round so if your head exhaust ports are square you will have leak issues. pull your headers back first to see what shape your head exhaust ports are first.

Here is two links to the Headers and exhaust that I will be using on my 89 Iroc that I am in the middle of a LS1 swap right now. This is some of the best flowing best sounding exhaust out there and it's stainless. The headers are desighned for third gen LS1 swap.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

My .02, I had headmenn long tube headers and I did not like them. I think I spent more money on gaskets than I did the headers trying to eliminate leaks. A bolt hole near the middle was slightly off almost ruined the threads on the head. I'm trying to remember but on the driver side, 3 bolts going towards the aft I couldnt install the spark plug. So anytime you need to change the plugs you have to pull back the header. Also, you have to get creative with the spark plug wire routing, though this might be common across all after market headers. If I did it again I'd try something different and definitely go ceramic. My trucks ceramic headers look amazing going on 3 years now. The headmen headers paint rusted out within 6 months in Hawaii.

Also I would suggest going with a mini starter. It'll make life so much more easier.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

Can anyone here comment on Jet Hot coated vs factory coated headers by manufacturers like Hooker? Is one better than the other? Are they coated inside and out?

Jet hot is pretty much the standard out there. I'm sure there are better, but I don't know what they are, and Jet Hot is better than most.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

I have a 87 Z28 with full frame extensions and cross braces. It has a ZZ430 350. Right now I have a severe vibration caused by long tube hookers hitting the K frame because of the 4 tubes(right at the brake line on the passenger side) bought it like that. Anyway was doing research on shorty headers and was surprised to find so many posts about emissions. I live in Rhode Island and emissions and inspections are not required on any vehicle older than 25 years old. Also it is registered as a "historic vehicle" so I don't have to pay yearly taxes, save on registration fees and cheap insurance. My question is what shorties are the biggest tube and that would come with a matching large tube "Y" pipe to connect to the 3" pipe to the rear ( which runs down the driveshaft hump because of frame connectors I can't go under the passenger seat. Due to the Lowered frame/suspension I can't put duals to the rear. Ricks has shorties but they have very restrictive bends. Would love to find headers with at least 1 3/4" runners to match the aluminum heads. Appreciate the input, Anybody need my hooker long tubes? lol
