Hedman 68470 Hedder with which Y-Pipe?

I have a question pertaining to the Hedman 68470 hedder. At the collector, this hedder is a "ball type" flange. However, in the website it recommends two different Y-Pipes that will fit this hedder, the 17470 and 17478.

I found a used set of 68470 hedders and what appears to be the 17470 Y-Pipe...Am I missing something or is this the best the two parts fit together?!?!? Doesn't seem right.

I am thinking this hedder would be better fitted to the ball type flange 17478 Y-Pipe.

Anyone have any insight on this?
Thanks.

Re: Hedman 68470 Hedder with which Y-Pipe?

I have the 68470 header with a 17478 y pipe. That pictures you provided appear to fit the same as mine do. I checked out Hedman's site, and the 17470 y-pipe is gasketed. I believe what you have will work.

The only problem I foresee is if the PO did the welding on the y-pipe without proper fit up of the headers.

edit: I don't have any exhaust leaks with this set up.

I am just not comfortable with the connection between the hedder and Y-Pipe. Any idea what the gasket looks like...assuming it is conical to fit into the flare of the Y-Pipe?

Going by the pics linked from Hedman (which may be wrong, it looks like the gasket is a rubber donut on the inside of the cone.

Tightening up the 3 bolts of the flange should make the seal for you whether or not you have the gasket, I would guess.

Edit : Again, if the y-pipe was welded wrong, you may never get the seal. Positioning of the welded portion of that y-pipe is critical.

That would make sense. I'll fire off an email to Hedman tomorrow, see what they have to say. Appreciate your responses.

Re: Hedman 68470 Hedder with which Y-Pipe?

i have a pair this headers and when i ordered them i orderded the wrong y pipe. the y pipe has to fit over the ball n socken about a 1/4 inch or more (also have a set on my 79 chevy, no problems with leaks as long as u do proper header break in and make sure everythings tight). the y pipe for the gasket will just hit the botfom if not barely slide on the ball n socket. i had to modify the gasket y pipe to work cause i didnt have the time to wait for the right one. hope this helps

Re: Hedman 68470 Hedder with which Y-Pipe?

Okay, so Hedman replied. They responded with the following:

The y-pipes are offered both ways as a replacement piece for customers with older sets of hedders. You will want to match the collector styles of both pieces. For example if your hedders have the ball and socket style collector then you would want to order y-pipe 17478 with the socket style collector.
