Need to hang exhaust on the cheap
I made a cut behind my catalytic converter and used a band style clamp and coat hanger to reconnect the pipe, but it never stays put for more than a day. I just can't get the hanger to hold it tight enough and the rear section of pipe always ends up slipping out the back of the clamp no mater how tight it gets (granted, I have a really cheap one). I would do it the right way but the only adapter I could find that would fit was a special order part for almost 50 bucks. I'm sure I could get amuffler shop to tack weld it for that much, but I don't have that lying around right now. So here are my ideas, was wondering if you guys thing it would hold better.
1)JB weld. Would that hold at high temps? Wouldn't have to be gorilla tight, just enough to keep it in the band and from moving too much with the hanger.
2)Grasping at straws here, but does baling wire tolerate that kind of heat without meltng? I have a TON of it around and could hang it very securely if it wouldn't burn up.
3)Exhaust tape around the joint. Does that stuff get hard enough that it would hold the pipe in place?

Local exhaust shop here in my neck of the woods said he would redo all 3 of my hangers for $50. I am going to take him up on it. Might be worth a couple phone calls to see if you can get done cheaply and right.

From what it sounds like you are butting the two pieces inside a band clamp? Get a short section of pipe that fits over both ends and 2 exhaust clamps Ubolt style. Cheapest near propper way to solve this I can see. Ugh, bailing wire and coat hangers?
It takes about the same effort to fix something right, and once.

That was what I meant by doing it the "right" way. The only piece I could find at my local stores was a special order one that was almost 50 dollars or I would have just done that. I'm gonna get it welded as the money comes but I was just wondering if any of those would work for a temporary fix.

I used this connector from Autozone along with a couple of clamps to put mine together. Hasn't fallen apart yet and even went through inspection that way. Under $4.00 for the connector.

one of those butt connectors with either clamps or self tapping screws screwed thru both pipes will get the job done..

You all seem to have said exactly what I suggested in different words, LOL. Seems unanimous. It will cost a total of $12 to do it right, vs $10 for JB weld and hoping it will work. Coat hangers and bailing wire are free, but C'mon, we're talking 12 bux.
