Cheap Exhaust

So I'm looking to stick a cheap-as-possible exhaust on just to get my car running, I have nothing at the moment. It's a mild 383 fuel injected with TPI, with angle plug heads and no AIR/emissions systems. The car is a 88 Camaro SC manual transmission with a standard sized starter.

Did a bunch of searching and reading on here, wanted to sanity check what I've chosen based off the stickies and other posts I've seen, make sure that everything will bolt up like it seems before I pull the trigger and buy it.

Headers: http://www.jegs.com/i/Hooker-Headers/520/2460/10002/-1

Y-Pipe: http://www.jegs.com/i/Dougs-Headers/776/D901/10002/-1

Cat-Back: http://www.jegs.com/i/Hooker-Headers/520/16823/10002/-1

Plus a 2.5-3 adapter to go from the ypipe to the catback. Everything look like it should work?

Re: Cheap Exhaust

wow i guess you idea and my idea of cheap are two different things, not a bad thing thats a nice setup you have chosen. For a little more i would personally buy the hooker brand y pipe so everything without a doubt would fit but the doug's headers y pipe look like the same design. Worst case scenario an exhaust shop or a little welding can fix fitment issues. Also the catback and y pipe is a ball and socket type adapter, there shouldn't be any issues but if run an adapter you will need to cut the ends off just so you know

Re: Cheap Exhaust

That is about the cheapest i can find, the biggest requirement is not having to pay to have it towed to a shop for welding. Do you know of cheaper options?

Re: Cheap Exhaust

Not sure how it's A Good Idea to place so much emphasis on "cheeeeep"... rarely in my admittedly short experience in this hobby or for that matter in life in general, has it ever been more "cheeeeeep" to buy something half-a$$ed TWICE or OFTEN, than to buy it ONCE, RIGHT, and never touch it again.

I seriously doubt that Y-pipe would bolt up to those headers. There's no "standard" for the arrangement of the flanges, etc.; they could be several inches apart, at the wrong angle, etc. etc.

Also not sure how it's even POSSIBLY a good idea to strangle a 383 with a Y-pipe that's too small for a stock 305, even if it's already suffocated with TPI on it.

At least, get the right Y-pipe for the headers, in the right size; then all you'll get to enjoy over and over again frequently, will be those crappy 3-bolt sealing-proof flanges, and of course the headers rusting out.

Re: Cheap Exhaust

Sorry its the Holley tpi, stealth ram. But yeah Im trying to get the car running so i dont have to get rid of it. Ive been out of money on this project for the past year unfortunately, hence the cheaping out.

Someone posted those y piped as working with thoes headers here on the forums, but i wanted a second opinion. The reconmended y pipe for those headers is $100 more.

Ok ranting now, it just seems silly to me, i can get a dynamax headers + dual exhaust kit for $500, but cant get a single pipe for almost double that. Am i missing something, or should i just go back to the dual kit as the cheapest option? It was no fun to install on my other car, but dual 2.25 isnt too bad is it?

I don't have a grand to spend on exhaust, or pay a shop, car needs to run, or go it really is about the cheapest option at this point.

Re: Cheap Exhaust

I wouldn't mess with dual exhaust. WAY too much maze, with too little cheeeeze at the end. In any case, I seriously doubt you're interpreting the "dual" part correctly.

Don't buy "cheeeeeep" just for the sake of "cheeeeeep". No sense in buying the same thing twice. If you can't afford to do it at least SOMEWHAT right, you probably will run up against plenty else you can't afford, once it's "running"; and then you'll be right back where you are now except your bank account will be even emptier.

Get the right Y-pipe that goes with whatever headers you buy. There's no other option that will work.

Stealth ram != TPI. Not the same thing at all. But that makes a 2½" Y-pipe an EVEN WORSE idea.

Re: Cheap Exhaust

It I were you I would source out a used take off exhaust. Being a take off it will already fit a car fine and should run about 300-400 or so for a decent setup. The only problem w/ this is that decent take offs can be difficult to come by and when they do they are often junk. Another exhaust option just to get the car running is headman long tubes, headman s bends, 1 foot or so of pipe on each side and mufflers. That setup would run around $300 or so, the downside is a lack of ground clearance but it will help get your car going.

There's always side pipes.
Heddman shorties,
Then two 90° bends, little bit of straight tubing and another bend, then just a muffler (and heat diffuser..I have burn scars on my legs if you need convincing) per side and walla!
You get duals, you get cheap, you get ground clearance, and unless you have a diffuser or wear boots, you even get second degree burns!

Re: Cheap Exhaust

Save your $$$ and watch the classifieds...
Dyno Don's headers and y pipe pop up, I think they have a 3" y Pipe, for sure the Hooker 2055's do... Dyno Don's are Stainless, and if you get the Hooker look for ceramic coated...

As noted, you're not that far from a nicer set of headers / y pipe...
You can by a 3" cat back from many places... I got a "thunder II" from flowmaster, not so much for the "flowmaster sound" but cuz it was a 1 in / 1 out, pipe hidden and flows better than the 1 in / 2 out designs...

Your 383 will thank you!

If you get the Dougs Y pipe cut off the 2.5 section and add a 3" section the merger is super restrictive on those

Re: Cheap Exhaust

True duals dumped before the rear axle is the cheapest I can think of (and of course it sounds awesome). Just leave you to buy your mufflers of choice and some sections of pipe.

Re: Cheap Exhaust

The SLP stainless header/y pipe setup was the best I ever had. Used they shoukd be fairly cheap now. Adding a dumped kuffler where the cat goes makes a very cheap setup until you can afford a catback kit. Goodluck!!

Re: Cheap Exhaust

I wound up just going for the $180 kit from dynomax. I had it on the car previously with the old engine but it got chopped up when it was removed. Two day free shipping from jegs later, and I should have it hooked up and running this weekend. It only took me a couple hours to get it hooked up last time.

Thanks for the advice guys, it seems the options are way more complicated and numerous than I thought. Hopefully I'll have enough money to take it to a shop and get a proper exhaust done someday by someone who knows more than I, for now at least the car will be on the road.
