Adding a catalytic converter
Usually people are asking how to remove the catalytic converter. I want to install one back into the car.
1985 Camaro 5 speed with 1991 350 SD TPI, vortec heads, big cam, slp runners, ect. Made 380hp on a engine dyno. 1 1/2" headers piped back to a flowmaster muffler.
Car is far from tuned correctly. Seems very rich and stinky at idle. I like the sound of the flowmaster drone but find it a bit raspy at times when reving and I don't like the exhaust pops on higher RPM gear shifts.
I have a Magnaflow spun 2.5" high flow catalytic converter I was thinking of installing in the stock location to tone down the sound and clean up a bit of the idle stench. There are no emission regulations here so I don't have to worry about correct equipment.
If the car is idling and running too rich will it just burn out the converter or will it work and clean up the exhaust?

Re: Adding a catalytic converter
I would use 1 3/4 headers, 2.5" Y pipe into a single 3" cat (or dual 2.5" cats) and a 3" catback with a better muffler than a flowmaster.
Also a good tune and a ignition box of your choice will help clean up the exhaust smell.

I would get it running properly before installing a cat. You will clog it up in no time if you run a cat on a rich tune. A cat does take away the stinky smell at idle to some degree, but if you are excessively rich, the cat will not last.
