I only want.....Headers that will actually fit my 91'

Headers for my 91'R7U/1LE. Headers that FIT!!!!!! Not headers that the ad hype proclaims to fit, but actually fit. I'm pulling my LB9 & T5 out and replacing with new ZZ6 350 (carbed) and 6 speed. I really do not want to put the stock manifolds on to it. I will be putting in new motor mounts regardless of the original's condition. Y pipe **** i can deal with i just want headers i dont have to smash and bend and that wont crack or fall apart in 6 months. Everytime i find an interesting set i start investigating and they usually get shot down in reviews/threads/posts whatever. This is getting frustrating. Any help would be cool.

Re: I only want.....Headers that will actually fit my 91'

I'm using Hooker 2055s with their y-pipe in my '91 Z28 with a (mostly) stock 305/T5. Only issue I see is that one of the brake lines rides awfully close to the headers. I don't know if you saw this thread, but it did influence my decision: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/exha...055s-come.html

Now to be fair, I have to retain my emissions (so you might not need AIR tubes) and I haven't installed the full exhaust yet (it ends at the y-pipe). It's also a royal PITA to install/change plugs, but I fee like that is the case with most headers. Let me know if you want to see pictures of anything.

Hope you find a set that works!

Thank you, yes I saw that and they seem most favorable so far. I have no emissions to worry about. Cut the cat out long ago. Sure! I can't turn down pictures.

I'm running the Hookers on my 91 also. The only fitment issue I had was getting the head and Y pipe flanges to line up and not leak. That requires a bit of fiddling. I got mine second hand from somebody locally. So the price was right....otherwise I would have gone with Dyno Don's setup instead. I believe his uses a ball flange and a 3" Y pipe. The Hooker setup has a smaller diameter Y pipe than Don's. 2.5" if I recall. I'm running them on a 305 T5 car also. Do yourself a favor when you go to install them and get a set of shorty plugs, wires with 90 degree boots and set of plug boot insulators. The wires/boots run real close to the hooker headers.

I second this, shorty plugs and 90 degree wires are almost a requirement. I'm looking into a set of insulators as well. You are correct, the Hooker y-pipe has 2.5" inlets/3" out. Probably fine for a 305 (I'm running a TPI 305 with a mild cam).

I'll get some pictures tomorrow!

Look again, the Hookers are not really 2 1/2"

You would have to cut them back to make them 2 1/2" they are not even 2".

Interesting, I hadn't tried to measure them (I'm just going off the product listing) but now I'm going to pull the y-pipe and take another look. Those are the 2055s?

EDIT: Ahh, I found the post that originally came from and I see what you mean now. The flange itself is nowhere close to 2.5", but it can be widened up a bit. Thanks!

Re: I only want.....Headers that will actually fit my 91'

Well, I neglected to take pictures over the weekend but I do have a couple old ones that show the driver's side header.

http://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thir...9560ca0a27.jpg

http://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thir...d1cf89d95d.jpg

Clearance is a little tight around the brake lines but I managed to move them a little further away. Also worth noting is that I don't have any HVAC stuff, so I don't know what clearance will be like on that side of the car.

I hope that helps!

The stainless obx headers are the best bang for the buck right now. I have the 1 3/4" long tube ones. They also make 1 3/4" shorty headers.

Found a set of used ones recently pulled out of later 3rdgen camaro. No airtube holes. Also thru in a new y pipe that matches them up to where my cat used to be.

I feel your pain. I read the whole exhaust/header thread about a year ago and doing it again now. On the same issues as you. Great thread. I know Dyno Don's is the best but keep other options posted in thread for most recent header/Y-pipe options. Thanks.

What does the rest of your system look like? What's the fitment issues on the long tubes you have?

I looked on the OBX website, and couldn't find headers for third gen, only 2nd and 4th, did you get your headers direct or from a dealer?

Thanks

These are the 1 3/4" stainless long tube headers:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/STAINLESS-ST...pV3RLI&vxp=mtr

For under $300. I have them on my supercharged 412". They are fantastic.

They also have these shorty headers, also stainless:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/OBX-Exhaust-Header-86-90-GM-Chevy-Camaro-Firebird-305-350-Ci-Stainless-/172257878913?vxp=mtr
These I'm confused on. I've not actually had a pair in my hands, but they are listed as 1 5/8" but I'm told that they measure out to 1 3/4". The long-tube version is sometimes listed as 1 5/8, or 1 1/2" but are always 1 3/4"..

Nearly $600 for shorty headers is a little expensive, even if they are stainless. The long tube headers are the way to go. Whatever you do though, don't buy mild steel headers unless they are $150.

Thanks... from the research I've been doing, it seems long tubes might be a pain to install on my '83 LG4... it's stock... what do ya think?

Oh well, my intent wasn't to suggest installing headers on a stock engine. Especially an LG4.

When I'm responding to posts I'm assuming the person is swapping out the old, tired engine for a new one. The OP for example was installing a ZZ6.

But beyond that, I found them quite easy to install on my Formula.

Thanks Joe, I really do appreciate the help, and I don't mean to highjack the OP's post. Yeah, I still have the original LG4. That's why I'm going for replacing the exhaust first. I'm hoping to find some headers at a decent price.

No worries dude i don't care or mind anyone hijacking my posts.
I just wound up getting used headers for $150 from a Camaro/Firebird junkyard that they pulled out of some thirdgen that was smashed. I don't even know what brand they are but whatever they are still better than putting the original 305 manifolds back on. Sand blasted for a sixpack and $20 for can of headerpaint and they look like new.

Haha, nice! A guy about 3 hrs drive from me just sold a used set of Dyno Don's... sorry I didn't jump on that one. I might just get a new set of 2205's.

The Hedman 68470 isn't a bad choice for a stock motor. 1 5/8" primary. I ran a set on a 560hp car about 10 years ago.

I live in northern canada so that $119 would turn into $200 or more once you add shipping, customs, dollar exchange rate, and 14% tax. I don't and won't buy anything off Ebay.

That's too bad. Must be tough in Canada - high taxes, no handguns, and now I hear they are banning pitbulls.

You may have already noticed the tube is quite close to the starter (especially if you run a large starter). You may want to get one of those blankets for the starter to avoid hard starts when hot. I ran those headers on a car back in the late 90's and I had a lot of hot start issues.

Thanks u bet I'll get a blanket for it. Is there any benefit to wrapping the pipes? See that once in a while.
Ya Canada is a pain in the rear when buying anything. I saw a new z06 vette at the dealer and the price was $128890😥 plus the mentioned 14% sales tax. New camaros are $50000-$80000 depending on model.
Pit bulls are only banned in a few **** cities. Where I live there are more guns & pet wolves than pit bulls lol.
