installing a vacuuum canister
Hey guys
I have a 1983 camaro that i am installing a vacuum canister on and i was wondering if anyone knows what kind of hose would best to use. i saw one installed on a similar car with canister on the drivers side behind the headlight and it looked like he used heater hose. also can you go from a 3/8's hose to 1/2 on the canister then 3/8's back to 1/2 on the brake booster
any help would be great thanks.

Have you looked to see if you already have a vacuum canister? There's a ball under the driver side headlight - you have to get to it from under - removing the bottom plastics from underneath. It's known as the "orb" by some - it holds vacuum for the heater controls. Maybe you can tap into it.
I'm under the assumption that you're not getting the braking you need. Did you just do a motor swap or something? Have a big cam?

Re: installing a vacuuum canister
I installed a .040 350 with a fairly big cam. there is no canister that i can see. my brakes are pretty bad at idle after one or two applications. i already bought the canister i just need to know what kind of hose will work. i would hate to by 1/2" heater hose or something if its not going to work

Early 3rd gens didnt use the ball under the headlight. Theirs was mounted on the firewall over the booster in a long cyl. Several aftermarket canisters are also available
Easiest is to find a canister from a 3rd gen or other junkyard car. S10's/blazers mounted a similar orb under the hood. Vacuum line is 5/23" IIRC, dont use 1/2". You dont tee into the booster line with the vacuum canister

Re: installing a vacuuum canister
Wether you run 3/8" or 1/2" hose or a combo of the two shouldnt matter. I had a canister on my car a while back. The check valve on my booster is for 3/8" hose. You may want to find a check valve for 3/8" hose. It will just make everything simpler.
The vacuum canister does allow you to use the brakes 2 maybe 3 extra times while just idling in traffic, but after that you still have to do a few quick revs of the motor to build vacuum back up. It doesnt last long. Have you tuned your idle circuit good? I picked up a few extra inches of vacuum by tuning my idle circuit better (this is assuming you have a carb).

I just went to Auto Zone and got 3/8's hose. It was either fuel hose or vacuum hose. I didnt run long pieces of it, but I never had a problem with it collapsing in.
