Looking good! Congrats on the baby girl! I just had my first kid Oct 1st...so I know what thats like haha. If I was actively working on my car, I think it would be on hold even now three months later. Crazy how fast the time goes when your hands are full.
Good luck on the progress!

Re: a third gen, a Z06, and a long winter
How did you go about establishing the correct location of the frame rails before cutting and welding it all in?
Im planning my swap, but i want to integrate the frame rails in the rear as well and remove the rear seat area entirely. I want to use c5 fuel tanks. It looks in the front that the c5 frame was notched to overlap the thirdgen front rails, then was brought down and welded to the existing metal.

Just read this whole thread.. and awesome!
and ghettocruiser: civette was the first car that came to mind when I started reading this build. May not be as popular but for sure very cool. This is one of those iconic builds such as the diseal thirdgen and the ecotech one. If only I had the garage, time, and money
Updates soon please!

Frame Placement:
Placing the frame in the correct spot is not that difficult, it just takes patience and a lot of time.
I started by first measuring the stock 3rd gen and sketching it out on paper (if I had 3D models of the 3rd gen I would have done it on the computer, as I have the vette CAD, but GM didn't switch from design on paper to CAD until around 1996 from what I understand.) I determined the C5 frame would actually fit without major modification so I started cutting the 92 a little at a time. The frame was centered in the car and the wheels were centered in the wheel well, the rest fell wherever it would and I worked around it.
Lots of cutting and fitting later and I had the C5 frame tacked into place. As you can see in this pic the C5 rails were much higher on the top side than the 92, so I cut and fit the C5 so the rails "stepped down" to the height of the 92 rails:
The rear rails were slid into the rocker panel area and welded in with some filler pieces. I don't have a good pic of this, but when I flip the car upside down for finishing I'll snag some pics.
I also made a frame out of 2x4 steel that is welded into the rockers and runs back to pick up the rear rails.

Re: a third gen, a Z06, and a long winter
The entire dash and support system was cut out of the 92 and the C5 firewall was slid in place:
The firewall had to be raised slightly, but not so much to throw all the steering and brake linkages out of whack.
The 92 was actually wider between the A pillars than the C5, so I had to make some filler panels, which you can see in the above pic.
I then had to fabricate a metal dash insert to go from the 92 metal to the C5 dash:
Good luck with fitting the whole vette under the 3rd gen. I know how much work it is, so be prepared.
The kicker of this whole deal is that I plan to have only about $5K in the whole deal, including the car. Now, mind you I had all the parts left over from my 2001 Z06 (which I purchased for my 68 Camaro project) so I didn't add that into the overall price.
I'm a little stuck at the moment as I need a turbo. I was planning on using a Holset off a Dodge truck as I had one found for $50, but my deal fell through on that. I'm building around the turbo while I'm at this stage, but don't plan on running much boost to begin with. Once I have the car all sorted it's easier to "turn up the wick" with a better turbo than it is to go back and cut everything up to install the whole turbo kit.
Anyone got a hairdryer sitting around they need to get rid of?

Such a cool project! If it ends up anything like the rest of RideTech's stuff you have been involved with this will be one hell of a DD Haha!
So you need to R&D some of the Ridetech adjustable shocks & or coil overs for a bolt on application for our 3rd gens

Well, it' won't be nearly as nice as the company cars, I just don't have that much money! (If you added up all the parts and everything in the Velocity 68 Camaro it had over $200K in it).
With around 30 R&D vehicles I don't really need any more R&D candidates, LOL! I will let loose of a small secret, however, I am working on struts at the moment that will be pretty damn nice. Since I have a soft spot for 3rd gens I'm pushing to pay a little more attention to these cars.

I'll get some pics tonight. I decided the stock crap up front had to go. Now the only thing left is a small amount of steel around the radiator.

Well, I'm a day late. . .but anyway, here are a few pics of the now very absent front end:
You can see the upper intercooler mounts in the 1st and 3rd images. I'm going to build a tubular bumper cover support and tie the lower mount into that.

What size turbo you looking for?

Re: a third gen, a Z06, and a long winter
Turbo Size: anything that'll run in front of a stock LS1 and not cost much.
Honestly, it doesn't have to make much boost. The plan is to get this thing together and drive it for a while. Then fix what I don't like and put a "real" turbo on it and have some fun.
It's main purpose is to drive 4 miles to work and 4 miles home everyday, so it doesn't need much at this point.

That's why I just picked up a Volkswagen Passat TDi wagon. . .32mpg in town with my driving style! Now I gotta get the 3rd gen done so I can build a bio-diesel reactor (like I need more projects)

6 speed swap into the TDI with a veggie oil conversion. Driving on pennies!!!
Car is looking good. Good idea on rebuilding the front end. Sometimes to get things to fit and work like you want, its much easier to just build it from scratch rather than tinkering with what the general put in place.

Re: a third gen, a Z06, and a long winter
Yep, factory bumper cover. The bumper just needs to be supported in the critical areas so it cannot bend. I'll get some pics up soon as I have it mostly completed.
I've been building this style of bumper for our dirt late model cars for years. They use a plastic "replication" of a stock bumper cover, but it lives on the dirt at 130-140mph, so I think it'll be fine on the street.
sorry for such a long "winter"! Lately I've been developing struts for the 2010 Camaro (which will translate over to the Mustangs, and I'm trying to get it to work on the third gens as well) so I've not had much time on the turbo car.

I've not done a damn thing on the 68 in quite a while. The plan is to have the 3rd gen done this summer (though I do have to clean up my bagged 02 S-10 as I have it for sale). Then this winter I want to get back on the 68.
I've been running our 48 Hour 67 Camaro at some autocrosses and I REALLY need to get the 68 back on the road. . .I miss that car!!!

I do have to apologize for the lack of updates. . .this is the time of year I actually get to crawl out of my cave and run some events (not to mention it's 90-105 degrees in my non-air conditioned garage, so I don't want to be out here any more than I have to!).
Last weekend I participated in the Optima Face Off at at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI where I won the autocross, finished 3rd on the road course, and finished second overall (beating a $350K+ Porsche Carrera GT!):
http://www.ridetech.com/info/2012/06...ceoff-results/
This past weekend I was at the Good Guys show in Des Moines, IA where I won the Pro autocross class in our 48-Hour 1967 Camaro as well as the Super Sunday deal with our 2010 Camaro (if you read into this you'll notice I have prototype struts on the car. . . and I love third gens. . .so what's next?):
http://www.ridetech.com/info/2012/07...goodguys-iowa/
This weekend I'll be running the 48 Hour car again at the Columbus Good Guys show. Then it's off to Michigan next week for a military show and an "OEM" install of our air suspension.
I've made some progress on the third gen, but have simply not had time to update my website or my posts here.
I hope you all understand and bear with me. . .I'll get back on it in a few weeks!

Good luck on the circuit, can't wait to see updates on the 3rd Gen, you've already given me some ideas for mine.

Britt,
Great job at the faceoff...I was there with my shop counterpart in the blue Z06 from Underground Autosports.
This is a very cool project you got going!!
BTW I was talking to Bret at the optima challenge and he said the third gen coil overs were going to be avilable by this fall...is this still the plan?

The plan is to officially release our new strut program at SEMA.
First cars up are the 5th Gen Camaro and the 05+ Mustang.
Then it's on to the 3rd Gen Camaro and Fox body up Mustangs.
I don't have any good pics at the moment, but I'll see if we can't snap a few today.
