Drop base air cleaner mod idea
So when i first bought my car i put a drop base air cleaner on it rather than the flat base. With the drop base it still covers the injectors a bit even with the spacer removed. (As shown here)
With a flat base you don't get this problem because the lip on the base isn't as high. Also with the flat base without the stock spacer i can run a 4" air filter. So i have this idea, rather than just buying a flat base why not take the opportunity to fabricate something of my own. So here's my idea. Only thing needed would be one of those steel bowls that your wife uses to mix things in lol. I would cut the bottom off the the bowl the size of the tbi. Then i would measure the lip on my drop base air cleaner and measure out the same depth on the bowl. This would keep my air cleaner at the same height it now sits at. I would then cut the top of the bowl off. It would now look like a normal air cleaner spacer but it would be angled, thus not covering the injectors and restricting air flow. Then i could just cut a hole out of the bottom off of my air cleaner to the size of the bowl and weld it up. It seems pretty easy to me, Has anyone ever seen someone do this before?

Re: Drop base air cleaner mod idea
Sounds plausible. Especially since I watched my dad take a cookie tin and turn it into a air cleaner for his rat rod. But you know you could pick up another assembly for 20 to 30 bucks and rob the base of it. Even if its chrome sand it good and paint it black. Unless you just want to cut and weld something I know how that is to. Good luck and post pics if you do what your thinking.

you could also just buy/make a spacer to get the injectors up a little higher... they are supposed to be worth a bit of power..
also, they make the air cleaner base like you are talking about already- they market it towards the TBI trucks..

Re: Drop base air cleaner mod idea
Ok, so instead of spending $37.25 plus shipping on the power charger like the one above, i made my own using a $5.00 bowl. Only difference is im cutting the bottom out of my air cleaner base and adding a lip to it so it will sit perfectly on my bowl. Here is my end result. I have more pics of the process it took to make it.
This is how restricted the intake was
and this is how it will look now
I'm expecting some better throttle response and will also eventually be smoothing the top of my throttle body as in the ultimate tbi mods. Also i took an old piece of vacuum hose and slit it all the way down and ran it around the top of the bowl to act as a gasket.
