Re: 1985 Pontiac Trans Am Bigblock 455 Very clean

I'd sell the engine separate if its REALLY is a Super Duty-455 engine. They usually bring in around $20,000 for a complete engine. It should have #16 round port heads(not to be confused with late '68-70 #16 D-port heads), a big LS2 cast into the intake with oversize intake runners that touch the bottom of the valve cover, lots of extra webbing in the lifter valley and provisions for a dry sump oil pump on the back of the block.

Re: 1985 Pontiac Trans Am Bigblock 455 Very clean

Just for the sake of accuracy, a 455 Pontiac is not a "big block." All Pontiac V8s from 326-455 are the same physical size.

Re: 1985 Pontiac Trans Am Bigblock 455 Very clean

I got the numbers of the block and heads and I just did some research and it is NOT a SD455 but it is a 73 455 with 4x heads. Sorry for the confusion. I was not trying to mislead anybody just going with what I was told. If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask. Thanks

I did not do the conversion. It was done by the guy I bought it from. Nothing was cut up or butchered and no shortcuts done. Everything is in its stock location except the alternator and bracket. The conversion was done right.

I'm sure the interest is out there, but with the 455, it'll never pass an inspection, without a "friendly" inspector.

And not a lot of people can afford a track only car.

Nice fit...I'm surprised that the cowl hood was the only thing needed.

It passes the texas inspection just fine and thats with emissions. It is not a track only car. It has all working factory options ac, heat, power steering, cruise and I mean everything. This is more of a cruiser and not a race car. It is my daily driver and this is one of the cleanest 3rd gens I have seen. If anyone is interested just let me know and thanks for the compliments.

If it passes in TX, your inspector doesn't care about his license. There is NO WAY it can pass LEGALLY, despite the emissions outputs. You may be getting a sticker, but the inspector isn't putting it on there legally, regardless of you knowing or not. He may just be putting the sticker on "because it is a cool car". Still risking his license & the stations license & penalties.

I fully believe that if the emissions pass, the car should pass, regardless of what's under the hood, cat or no cat...WHATEVER.

If he still has a cat on it, it is very possible the person doing emissions knows nothing about engines by looking at them and thinks its the stock engine dressed up. I know people in my area doing emissions know nothing and that would probably pass the visual if it still had a cat.

They may pass an emissions test, but VISUALLY? It'll fail. Your 'stang shoulda failed.

Not trying to prevent a sell, just want buyers be aware, that THEY may not be so lucky. YOU'VE just be lucky.

Trust me...I know a little more about inspections, than you average hot rodder.....

Re: 1985 Pontiac Trans Am Bigblock 455 Very clean

FAQs: Items of Inspection - Engines Swaps

Engine Swaps
Rules regulating engine swapping are not make/model specific. The simple rule is that a vehicle must have all emissions components that were present when it was manufactured, which may include:
  • PCV - positive crankcase ventilation
  • ACL - air cleaner (thermostatic air cleaner)
  • AIS - secondary air injection
  • EGR - exhaust gas recirculation
  • EVAP - evaporative emission
  • CAT - catalytic convertor
  • SPK - spark control
  • FR - fillpipe restrictor
  • O2S - oxygen sensor
I used to be an inspector, since my car has all except o2 sensor, because its carbed, all the rest is intact, this info came from http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/vi/Misc...gine.htm#swaps
and I consulted our DPS offical that comes in our shop
thanks
----------
And its inspected thru 09,next year exempt from emissions anyways, just needs to pass visual, thanks

Re: 1985 Pontiac Trans Am Bigblock 455 Very clean

WHOA! You are so misinformed...Not having to have an emissions test, does not mean you can just rip the cat off & stuff. All the EGR, cat, etc., hafta remain. You are correct on the emissions testing (23yrs), only visual. But lack of ANY of the components, will cause it to fail inspection.

You can UPDATE (newer into older) an engine, but not BACKDATE (older into newer).
No car that never was originally equipped with a big block, can LEGALLY have a big block put in, regardless of FI or carb.
No FI car can be ever be converted to a carb LEGALLY.
Absolutely no way around that.

And......"State law prohibits any person from selling, offering for sale, leasing, or offering to lease any vehicle not equipped with all emission control systems or devices in good operable condition. Violators are subject to penalties under the TCAA of up to $25,000 per violation." Selling of a tampered car.....

I didn't want to turn this into a discussion over your car being legal or not. Just didn't want someone to buy it & be surprised come next inspection, because of failing.

Bottom line...It ISN'T legal Good luck with your sale though.

Texas is that bad with state inspections? Im licensed in mass and know alot of people here and there across the country that do them and most of these guys like myself are pretty easy on classic cars such as most 3rd gens now, dont get me wrong, if someone comes in with a toyota tercel pushing 200k thats rotted out i wont be so nice, but if its a decent car i dont see why shootin the **** with the inspector for 2 minutes wouldnt help out even if hes an "emissions soldier". nice car btw, good luck with the sale

Thanks and I have never had any problems with any of my cars getting inspected here in the Dallas/Fortworth area, may be different in other areas here in texas though. I also just installed a new battery, old battery was getting weak and wanted to do it before it got too cold.

Well right now it is in the tranny shop getting a built tranny for it. Then it is probably going to be a good aluminum intake and carb. I also replaced the fuel pump, the other one was bad so it wasnt getting enough fuel.
