I remember reading that or hearing that the front brakes were "Caprice" rotors... I think the stock Caprice bolt spaceing was 5x5 instead of the 4.75x5 pattern we have on our cars. So redrilling them for the 3rd gen would make sence.

Thanks...

John

T towner,
You said you had the four vin #'s for the 881le's, could you send those to me or everyone so I'm finally convinced. I know Mark said the 88 1le's were produced late in the year, but I'm still very curious.
Thanks
Rob

Paperwork I have from GM says the Player's car were the first delivered with the 12" front brakes. The set I have for my 1988 has some signs of custom fitting (grinding marks). I suspect the later ones were more "machined" in appearance.

Somewhere I have the RPO from one of the 881LE cars. It was on eBay. Lots of us saved that JPG when it went through.

Chevy Rumble had an article a while back with one of the 88 1LE cars. Raced hard. Looked like an old race car. That accounts for 2 of the cars.

Sorry but I swore I would not give out the VIN's....that's the only way I got them.

Tomorrow I will compare the 1LE vin's to the 88 Players cars I have to see where they fall in the mix (can't believe I haven't already.).

Re: If you have a Players Challenge Car, please post here. (RPO- A4U, 1LE or R7U)

Facts about 1988 1LE Cars:

Below is a summary of information I have obtained from various sources including a current 1988 1LE owner and my two players challenge cars (a Camaro and a T/A.) Can't believe I haven't done this before.....was very surprised at the findings.

1988 Players Challenge Cars (were delivered w all 1LE components and more)
- Both A4U cars I have were built in Febuary 1988.
- The Camaro has Vin sequence of: 14XXXX
- The T/A has VIN sequence of: 22XXXX

The 1988 1LE's:
- The Camaro's have a Vin sequence of: 19XXXX
- The T/A's have a Vin sequence of: 26XXXX
- They were built relatively close together (as I assume the Players Cars were)
- Were built at the END of 1988 production.

I looked back through my notes and the owner of the 1LE stated his car had a Certificate of Origin from early September 1988.

This would mean the 88 1LE's were some of the last production cars built for the 1988 model year.

Therefore it seems the 1988 Players cars are technically the first 1LE's!?

I've heard from 2 sources the 1LE cars were needed in the US to legitimize the export of the Players Cars? This would seem to make some sense based off the build sequence but I'm not sure of the reasons.

Thoughts?

From everything I have heard, the 1LE's in 1988 where built in the last of the production year in order to "qualify" as production options. I have documentation that says the 1988 Player's cars were the "first" to come equipped with the larger brakes and that they were a soon to be production line item.

Very nice. Does it still have the original engine? What do the front brakes look like (most were returned to stock, but a few made it out with the Brembo calipers).

What year is the car? Pictures? Is there a RPO tag in the center console? List of RPO codes would help along with pictures.

Re: If you have a Players Challenge Car, please post here. (RPO- A4Q, A4U, or R7U)

Hi, I'm sure I have one, it has all the right stuff on it, it's a 91. I went to the dealership to get my rpo codes as the sticker is missing off the rear compartment and none of the right codes come up. It's a z28, but the rpo codes I got say it has a G80, gu2 axel, when I know it has the big brakes and aluminium pbr calipers, the car has it all, aluminium driveshaft, wonderbar, oilcooler, chalkmarks on the motor, any help would be appricated. Is it possible all the good stuff was transfered to a regular z28, due to a crash or a 1le that was not repairable? Would you have a vin list for a situation like that? Thanks

Could have been a promo car maybe? If it is real, 1le r7u will come up when you run the vin. Maybe you're right and someone installed the parts after a wreck? Maybe Mark has a thought on this.

Re: If you have a Players Challenge Car, please post here. (RPO- A4U, 1LE or R7U)

If you PM me your VIN, or the last 6 digits, I can check it against the ones I know and I can tell you if it is in the right range. If the GM parts counter does not show the 1LE or R7U and the car is a 91, then it was not a Player's car. So then I would guess someone swapped the parts. To verify that, you need to check the VIN number on the motor. Many player's motors were sold after the seasons as teams could re-race a 1991 car in 1992 (or in 1991 as the 1991 model was used for two years). So finding a players motor is not uncommon.

Start with the basics ... VIN first. Then go from there. Drop me a PM.

Mark.

R7H, like R7U is a marketing package, which is a combination of options for a specific purpose. R7U is well defined as a Canadian Player's car. If this is a Canadian car, we could look it up though Vintage Services and see what they can tell us. If USA car, then I'm not sure. Need someone in the know of 1LE cars that might recall a package or program where it might have been used.

Re: If you have a Players Challenge Car, please post here. (RPO- A4U, 1LE or R7U)

NEWS FLASH!!!

I've been able to document ALL the 1992 1LE R7U Camaros. I now have details on the options and colors. I'll be updating my production number chart to reflect the 1992 Camaros. The rarest car was a dark red with a red interior ... only 1.

Hopefully tonight I will update the chart.

I have to make more time and scan in a bunch of info. Have to see what would be the most useful information to post up. Decal locations are key for people restoring cars. Tech specs are always good. The lastest info on 1992 color combinations was pretty cool to find.

It's a winter project. Need a cold day for motivation.

Re: If you have a Players Challenge Car, please post here. (RPO- A4U, 1LE or R7U)

Quick question to add to the thread.

I've seen two ebay listings now for 1LE's, (not R7U cars mind you), where the ad states the car is # so and so of the total production. (Anyone see the 'red '92 with the tan leather gut just recently?) I didn't think there was any such recorded info at GM...Can anyone confirm?
My '91 1LE is an early production Canadian import (5sp/LB9). I have read the break down for 5spd's vrs auto 1LE's, but have never come across any documentation that states the actual build #; nothing like the '89 TTA's for example...
Anyone chime in?
Thanks,
-Andrew

There was 134 1LE camaros in the 1991 model year. Get a GM Vintage package for your car and you should have more info (was yours a 1990 production ot a 1991 production). I have the player's info, so you can subtract that info from the numbers and yours would be the few non-players 1LE cars.

I never bothered with the GM historical services paperwork as I have most of the original paperwork from day one.
This 1LE is a '90 build, shipped to Humberview motors in Etobicoke (Toronto) Ontario Leased in Dec of 1990.

Of the 134 produced thought 90-91. Take out the R7U's and that leaves 37 1LE-only Canadian cars made in 1990 and 1991. So your car is 1 of 37. Using the ratio of R7U cars in 1990 and 1991 (2:1), then your car might be 1 or 20-ish made in 1990. Factor in 5.0L and 5.7L, I'd guess your car is 1 of 12 or so.

About the best guesswork I can do.

What is the build date on your car? Leased in December suggests that it might be a 1991 production year. It's tough to say. The R7U cars were batched built, so I have the breakdown of how many were made for 1990 and 1991.

I'm not sure if you're addressing the validity of the red ext / tan leather int being available but my 91 1LE was red exterior, tan leather interior, with a ACDelco CD player to boot.

I have all the VIN's for 1992 R7U's and ran reports for each. A bit long of a process, but the results are worth it.

I'm still trying to document all the other VIN's from other years, but that is a task.

I saw the same red car I think. The only thing left original on mine is the unibody, dashpad, and rear spoiler.EVERYTHING else has been replaced. Granted I installed alot like a Strange rear end, Tremec transmission, a 383 and a supercharger. I bought the car because is had 19,000 miles and was in 110% condition. Only has 46,xxx miles now.

IMO the B4C's,1LE's,R7U's are the greatest 3rd gen's to have. I hope you guys hold on to them.

IT IS COMPLETE!!! THE PLAYER'S CAR REGISTRY IS COMPLETE!!!

After 9 years, I finally have every VIN and RPO for every Player's car made! See the updated color breakdown by car.

I can now offer the ability to verify a car as authentic, as well a provide a breakdown to color as well as what sequence it was in the batch. Free service I might add. :-)

Turns out my 1988 TA was the last one to roll of the assembly line for the 1988 model year. Sort of cool info.

Enjoy!

Mark we all owe you a debt of much more than thanks for all your undying efforts to put all this info together and publish it. I know you helped me out a lot when I bought mine verifying its authenticity and colour scheme etc. Very helpful for me and everyone else whom you've heard from too Im sure.

Now we should start working on reuniting the cars for a big race somewhere, sometime in the future. That would be awesome and once the economy rebounds might even garner some corporate sponsorship

Perhaps Im over dreaming here but thanks again.
