Metal gas cap
Does anyone else have a metal gas cap on their early thirdgen? Like maybe 82-86, give or take? I have two of these. one on my 82 T/A, one on my 85 F/B. part number appears to be 10021209.
There was a lot of skepticism about this in another thread so I had to start a new thread because the curiosity is killing me! Any replies are welcome.
Thanks, GT

That's the same metal cap as on my '82 Pace Car.
I open it often enough.

The one on my 82 S/E was plastic, so wasthe cap on my 84 15th. Pherhaps that is the dealer replacement cap I too have never seen a metal cap on an early Thirdgen.
I mean on low milage cars wouldn't the seal dry up and crack allot faster and need to be replaced? Of course it all depands on how the car was stored...

Judging by the fact that a number of you guys out there have the metal caps too, I'd have to say it backs up my theory that they are perfectly valid and accurate for early thirdgens.
Which cars got them and which did not, and what years..? I have no idea. A gas cap is so easy to swap out with a different one, so it would be useless to try and do a survey of who has what, since there's no guarantee it would be original.
But the mere fact that people DO have them on their early thirdgens though.. leads me to think they're valid. It's unlikely that ALL those cars started out with plastic caps and then they had a 10021209 swapped on.
My 82 TA has 3K original miles and is essentially untouched, so I'm confident the metal cap is factory. My 85 firebird has high miles but was 100% stock when I got it, so I tend to think that its metal cap is original too but have no way of knowing.

I had a metal Gas cap on my 87 when I first bought it, but it wouldn't hold a seal for emissions so I had to replace it

There was a metal cap on my 83 Z28 parts car, then I polished it, and put it on my SC!

My '84 from May of that year has the metal cap, I think it's the same part number.

Re: Metal gas cap
My 83 had the original metal cap which I promptly tossed in favor of a non-rattling actually sealing new plastic one haha

Thats a crazy price! Seems a lot of items are premium dollar right now on ebay. Go ahead and blow that tax refund! Last one I got off ebay, around 4 yrs ago was around $7.00 + shipping.

Re: Metal gas cap
have had a few 82's come my way lol
2 mid '82 built LU5 van nuys cars had the metal cap with the NDH code on it
My april 82 built van nuys LU5 had a metal cap when i purchased it in 2003 with 61K miles, Then I had to replace it with a GM plastic version since it was causing my car to have poor idle.
