I will not be able to tell you how many B4C's were not in service until we have collected all of the vins from 1991 and 1992.
What is your vin Icehole? So far and only guessing at this point, roughly only 50 or so from 1992 never made it to service. We have about 350 of the vins from 1992 so it is a slow process especially since GM keep them.

1992 B4C in Northern Virginia
I have a 1992 B4C that was ordered for the Montgomery County Police Department but was snagged before it could be delivered by the salesmen, he held onto it for about a year when it was sold to a friend of mine, I purchased it 2 years ago and have been maintaining its orginiality. It has 46000 orginial miles and never driven in the rain or snow. It is in great condition and garage kept. I am glad to have found more owners of these great cars.
How many surviors are out there?

B4Cs for p haze
Ok I am finally back, got about 10 B4Cs VIN numbers. You probally have them, but who knows. If you want I can e-mail or call you. Let me know. Also if anyone knows what law enforcement agencies used them, and how many please let us know. I live in California, and I know the California Highway Patrol used them. Also if you know what dealerships they came from. Please post back. Mine was purchased at Central Chevrolet in Fremont CA. and was never in police service. Thanks, Steve

My email is adtke1@***.net for those vins. You never know I might not have them. Several B4C's in Northern Cali never made it into service.
Agencies that used B4C's;
States of California, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Kansas, Nevada, Nebraska, Texas, Indiana, Connecticut, New York and possibly more.(I am ONLY talking 1991's and 1992's)
Several Sherriff's Departments, Largest being Harris Co. Texas in 1992.
California bought 21 in 1992
Utah bought 22 in 1992
Texas bought 155 in 1992
Nebraska bought a "bakers dozen" so I guess that means 14
United States Government bought approx 30+ of these B4C's for the FBI(1992). They also bought 1991's but of unsure of that amount.
The others are unknown at this time. That is what this thread is all about. Maybe we will know someday.

does anyone know of a way to determine who originally ordered the car. Like a title search or something. My B4c has a new title without me turning in the old one because it had a lean on it from a storage lot. So the state police gave me a bunch of papers to take to the DMV where I got a new title. I believe it was in service somewhere it still has the electronics for the flashers in the tailpanel.

B4C in Ohio
I just thought I'd check out what was up with the B4C. I bought one in Columbus Oh brand new in '92. Bob McDorman Chevrolet. They had two in stock. The black one, which looked cooler, had some aftermarket stripes added to it, I wanted mine to be as original as possible so I took the red one, incognito. The intake manifold gasket started leaking so I have to change it. It has 25,000 fun as hell miles on it. The car has been garaged since I bought it. I have a 5 speed 305, a friend of mine had a '92 B4C with a 350 automatic. Apparently these cars were made in the Vaneyes CA plant before it was shut down. I have a letter from GM saying exactly how many 92's bwere made and where. It's good to know there are other B4C owners out there who know what they have. I'm sure the majority of them have been used and abused, what a shame!

Hay P.haze92,
I am not sure how closely you watch E-bay Motors.
But there is a fellow Nebraskan selling a 1991 B4C.
I wish I had the cash to buy another one.
On this one the last 3 digits on the vin are " 911 ".
He states it was a former Nebraska State Patrol vehicle.
Just in case you don't already have this vin number
it is 1G1FP23F4ML188911
it is a Manual trans so I'm assuming it is a 305
PS there are also 2 1992 B4C's
One out of Texas
1G1FP23F1NL137769
The other out of
Oregon
1G1FP2383NL142375

Do you guys have any good pics of the B4Cs in service? I have been wandering around the internet trying to find pics with mixed results. The one car that I have been scouring the net trying to find more pics of is the Chevy demo car seen below. I want to replicate it but I need to see the graphics in greater detail. I figure that if anyone has pics its you guys and I could really use the help! Thanks!

there are a few in this folder:
Index of /images/B4Cstuff/copcars
anyone caught leeching my hosting to another site will get the picture replaced with goatse.jpg, pain.jpg, lemonparty.jpg, or horseblow.gif
I also made this before/after pic:
my car is one of the few colorado cars, so there is like around a 1 in 30 (guessing) chance that the car in the picture and my car are the same.

1992 Colorado B4C here. 1G1FP2380NL135447. 350 Auto. I'm working on a complete restoration; however, it's my high mileage daily driver. Still has the roll cage and twin spotlights like in the picture Tom posted. Manual windows and door locks, no cruise control. Only power rear hatch release and defrost.
Tom, I believe in an earlier post, you said yours still had some of the interior equipment. I need pics, please. My car was CSP 360 out of Greeley, CO. If you have the history of your car, you can tell if the car pictured is yours based on the license plate. I have found very few pics on the net, and none of “360.” I was fortunate enough to get the folder from the Colorado State Patrol with my car, showing the original start date, added equipment and insurance card along with service records.
I bought the car a year ago this past weekend from a local Memphian. He flew out to Denver in June of ’95, bought the car at auction and drove it home. It was his daily driver for 10 yrs. He added 3.73 gears and NOS. I’ve removed both and reinstalled 3.23s. I’m still working on the mechanicals and have a good contact in Colorado that’s helping me with research. However, interior photos have been non-existent so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In the pics where you can read the plate, the car number is on the plate. If that were my car in the pic, the plate would be CSP 360. I’ve seen various copies of that same pic, enough that I don’t believe that’s my car. I didn’t get the black pouch you’re talking about. In the registration, look for a car number similar to mine. I’ve tried calling the CSP to talk to their fleet department. The gentleman in charge isn’t really interested in assisting those of us trying to restore these cars and won’t take our calls or return them. At least that’s been my experience. I was able to find a retired trooper that drove all models of the B4C and actually started in the ’83 SSP Mustang. He’s been a big help, but couldn’t find any interior photos.
What I was asking about with your car was the siren speaker and additional speedometer that you made mention of. If you could provide pics of these, I would greatly appreciate it.
Greg

Thanks for the pics guys. I have been trying to get a B4C for myself but no luck yet. If you see any for sale near michgan, let me know.
Btw, I found a better quality picture of the prototype car at the book store. The text says "Chevrolet Special Service" and the logo in the chevy emblem is a generic badge with "B4C" in the middle.

Well, it's 3am and without going back outside to look at them, I believe my '92 Camaro has the 5" Unity H1 spotlight whereas my '91 Crown Vic has the 6" Unity S6 spotlight. Both have the same interior hardware, as the end caps were missing on the handles in the Camaro and I swapped the ones over from the Crown Vic. It's usually the A-pillar exterior bracket that is different between the various cars. Do a Google search for Unity Spotlights if you want detailed parts and installation manuals.

Hey all,
Found this site searching for 3rd gen info. My gf & I are looking at buying a B4C advertised locally, we're going to see it in a few hours. 92 L98 auto, white. I think I got enough info on here to verify its authenticity, but I'll be getting the VIN. The guy is asking $4600 with 173K miles, my gf won't pay more than $3500. Sound reasonable?

yeah pop the little door for the compartment on the gascap side inside the hatchback area and look at the tag to make sure it says "B4C" of course.
for such a high mileage vehicle, it depends on what your intention is. If its for collectability then wanting to know if the original engine is still in it? orginal tranny?
what if anything has been rebuilt?
how is the exterior finish? body damage? need paint? that kind of thing could require you to nearly double your investment. trust me, after years of driving beaters around it gets old fast.
How is the regular maintainance? brakes can be expensive to replace.
can you run a carfax on it? maybe its been destroyed and rebuilt.
Im not trying to say the guy could be trying to rip you. but the seller can often have a misplaced sense of value of the object he is selling because he has come to overlook all of the shortcomings of a vehicle, can you overlook them? he might be hoping you are...

For now this is just a fun-to-drive weekend car that we will work on over time. Nothing special, nothing crazy, we've just always loved the 3rd gen F-bodies. We would prefer it to be reliable of course.
Brakes are expensive? Just rotors+pads, or are you talking calipers and stuff to?
My friend is a GM auto tech and he'll be taking a look at it tomorrow night, we're going up there in about two hours to see it.
How long do the trannies on these last? My friend said it may be needing a rebuild soon, possibly the rear differential as well.
Definitely gonna Carfax it before we do anything official.
Brakes are expensive? Just rotors+pads, or are you talking calipers and stuff to?

Car: 1992 B4C 1LE
Engine: Proaction 412, Accel singleplane
Transmission: built 700R4 w/custom converter
Axle/Gears: stock w/later 4th gen torsen pos
the posi could be hashed, but likely it is still ok. I think it is an interesting thing that he brought it up about the rear. I guess long high speed runs like HP cars are exposed to can really hurt these rears.
the tranny has likely been replaced at least once at that mileage. thats why I recommended asking about it. sometimes the engine too, that is why I meantioned it as well.

Car: 92 RS B4C - needs lots of work!
Engine: 5.7L L98
Transmission: 700R4?
Yeah definitely gonna go overall the details and check out everything I can there, I'm pretty handy around a car. Then tomorrow it is getting the full workover from my friend.
I think the tranny is my biggest concern, but it won't be driven regularly nor raced anytime soon.
I forgot he posted the VIN with the ad: 1G1FP238XNL141949
That's a B4C right?
Can't wait to go give it a test drive, I've wanted one of these cars for sooooo long, yay torque!

you cant really always tell a B4C from the vin, which is why I told you where to find it on the build code label.
As far as vins go, any Z28 vin could pass as a B4C vin in 91 and 92

Yeah that's what I thought, since the identifying part of the VIN was the L98 engine which the Z28 had. I'll be checking that build code label for sure. Thanks!

197,xxx on the odometer. However, it's not correct. Between 100k and 181k when I bought it last year, it had 3.73 gears and an uncorrected speedo. Actually, I didn't get the gears swapped out until around 190k.
Original motor and transmission from what I've been able to find out. As a daily driver, it's starting to add up fast replacing all the worn parts. The kicker was when the A/C compressor had to be replaced...$914.00
Good luck if you decide to purchase that B4C. It all depends on the condition of the car and what it's worth to you, like was said above, and your plans for it. Mine is being restored to original condition and will be retired from daily driving as soon as I can get my other project running.

Well we went to see the car, and I didn't even bother test driving it. There were several large dents on the roof (tree maybe?) and the paint chipped & rusted. The front bumper was scratched to ****. The windshield was cracked most of the way across. The window tint was some crappy stuff that was peeling off, which isn't a big deal. All of the seals need to be replaced.
Question: Around the rear hatch, there is supposed to be a rubber seal between the car body and the hatch right? There was like a 1/4-1/2 inch of just empty space between the car body and the hatch, looks like the seal was taken out or fallen apart. Does that sound right?
The interior was in okay condition. He said the previous owner replaced the dash & door panels, which we could tell. I started it up, started fine, sounded nice.
He's asking $4600 (173K miles), which is way too high for a mint condition one IMO. My Dad knows a body guy, so assuming he can fix everything for about $1500 and a new paint job (Black!!), we're gonna offer $2200 which is KBB for "Fair" condition on a Z28.
Thoughts?

Another question: what is the actual HP rating for the L98? I've seen some sources citing 270HP, but mostly I see 245HP. What's the official output? Thanks

From what you are saying, there is way too much wrong for that price tag. The offer you stated would be much more appropriate. With roof damage I might consider a T-top or convertible conversion ...but then again I have always been a little crazy.

Yes I'm referring to the edge around the hatch closer to the front of the car, but I believe the lack of weather seal goes around all edges where the hatch closes against the body. I could figure it out if I could find a high res pic of a 3rd gen, or close up of the rear.

I don't want to clutter up this thread with my purchase questions, so I've started a new thread:
