My Numbers Dont Match GM's?????
Everywhere I look I find the total production of 87 Camaros was 137,760, but the last 6 numbers of my VIN are 138,898? Was the car just ordered as an 87 after the 87 production year "stoped"? Any opinions? Thanks.

Camaro VIN's start with 100001 thru 1XXXXX
Firebird VIN's start with 200001 thru 2XXXXX
Since the firebird had different models in 1983 with the series code as:
S for Firebird
W for Trans Am
X for S/E
Could you have the last five numbers the same but with a different:
Series code (S, W or X)
Engine code (2, 1, L, H, S or 7)
Check digit (1 thru 9 or X)
????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Re: My Numbers Dont Match GM's?????
Examples of an 1983
1G2AS8720DN201234 Firebird with 2 engine code - Iron Duke
1G2AW87S0DN201234 Trans Am with S engine code - LU5
1G2AX87H0DN201234 S/E with H engine code - LG4
201234 - Sequence Number
They probably would not have the same sequence numbers.
But what did GM do when they built over One Hundred Thousand Firebirds in 1982 and 1984 ??????

I see what your saying, I'm not sure what they did. Something good to look into.

Re: My Numbers Dont Match GM's?????
Well now...
There were 137,760 camaros made in 1987.
CAMAROS started with number 100001 the 1 actually signifies Chevrolet as Pontiacs in 1987 started with 200001.
in 1987 Camaros were built in Van Nuys California, and Norwood OH. this was the last year for Norwood OH.
Each car had a different sequence number for each plant. You could have a 101234 from Van Nuys and 101234 from Norwood...

I think what he's saying is that sequence numbers were specific to each assembly plant.... not the overall car line or individual model series.
This would not be the case for 1988 and later model F-cars, as they were built in one single plant.
Is that right, John?

Re: My Numbers Dont Match GM's?????
Frankie is right, What I am trying to say is BOTH plants started at 00001, for either line... In reality in 1987 there was a Firebird with VIN 200001, made in both Norwood OH and one made in Van Nuys... ALSO there was a Camaro in 1987 with Vin 100001 from Van Nuys and one from Norwood...
Does that make sence or am I confusing you more???

That confuses me more. His number is 138,898, and total number is 137,760. Making his car, 1138 cars more than they made if there were no "out of sequence numbering". Unless they just skipped groups of numbers.

Re: My Numbers Dont Match GM's?????
His car is number 38,898, the 1 actually represents Chevrolet. the FIRST vin for either plant for 1987 was 100001 for Chevy, and 200001 for Pontiac.
In 1987 Chevrolet produced the following (This is from a GM Recall)
NORWOOD Plant Code "N" 85824
Van NUYS Plant Code "L" 51936
To be technical the Recall reads as follows:
1987 "F-Car" Van Nuys, Plant Code: "L" From: HL100001 Through HL151936
1987 "F-Car" Norwood, Plant Code: "N" From: HN100001 Through HL185824
I can't be any more clear at this point...
To add to your knowledge and in hopes to help you undertand how the nunbering system works, The 1987 FIREBIRD is as follows:
1987 Van Nuys, Plant Code: "L" From: HL200001 Through HL235610
1987 Norwood, Plant Code: "N" From: HN200001 Through HL253013
