Locate my 1st Z-28

Hey, Guys was hoping you could help me out.I am trying to locate my 82 Indy pace car that I got in High School.I kept it for 11 years and 200K miles. Sold it after marriage and child. It's been about 16 years since I traded it. Found VIN# and was wondering the easiest way to locate it. Thanks for any help.

If you have the vin # just carfax it, should say the current owner.

I did this with the 89 IROC we bought new. It is pretty easy if luck is on your side.

First: you need the VIN which you have.

Second: do a Carfax as 89ROC-Z stated. Now for me it did not give the current owner. It just gives a last record date and should have a location and title number of where the state was last recorded. Mine was 2004 in Charleston WV but it didn't give a name.

Third: I had to call the WVBMV and ask if the the title number provided by Carfax was valid. They told me it was but would not give any more information... privacy act BS.

Fourth: I had to do a title search from an online independant. I don't remember the site but for like $40 I got everything I needed. name, address, location... everything.

Fifth: I plugged his name into zabasearch.com and got his telephone number.

It took me about 3 hours to track down the car. Three phone calls, $5000 and a trip to Charleston WV the car was back in my driveway. Here is the condition it was in on the day I picked it up.

Good luck! Let us know if you find it and can get it. There are a lot of variables so hopefully luck will be on your side. I got lucky since I only had the car for 2 years and 20K miles the first time. The other 3 owners put 65K on it in 17 years and keep the car basically 100% original. They did replace the exhaust, battery and do one repaint. Everything else is original...

Jrhaus, that is a great story. I would love to track down the Mustang GT (he he) that I bought new in 1988 and traded to a dealership in 1992. Unfortunately, I did not have the foresight to keep any paperwork with the VIN#.

Last I heard of my Mustang was in 1998, when it came up in a classified ad locally. I called the seller, and was able to verify beyond a doubt that it was my car. The seller had bought the car in 1992 from the dealership I traded it to, and basically kept it stored, having put hardly any miles on it. Unfortunately, I didn't have the money to buy it back at the time, and in the years since I have lost the seller's information.

I think the odds are better than average that my first new car still exists, somewhere out there...even if it were a junkyard dog, I think I would still like to have it. Lots of memories in that car.

Thanks. I have a much longer story in another post "How did you get into your camaro/firebird" if you want to read the long LONG version with lots of pictures and other ppls stories. Its a good read if you have time.

As far as the VIN, we didn't have any paper work either but the insurance company had the VIN from 17 years ago. That is a start if you have the same company.
