1982 Firebird factory colors?

I have a 1982 Firebird and I was going through all of the documents of previous work on the car (the previous owners didnt do nearly any work themselves and left all the shop paperwork in the console) and i found out that it was repainted in 1998. I thought this was the original color repainted, because it matches the interior, which is so worn out it has to be original. But i found that its factory color was "Slate Charcoal Gray". I want to know if that is the official color name and what interior and exterior color combinations were available in 1982 on the base model.

Re: 1982 Firebird factory colors?

1982 Camaros were available in a charcoal color, but apparently 1982 Firebirds were not? I know both car models weren't always available in the same colors, but that was a good one, so I'm surprised. In later years the color was available, known as "Dark Gray Metallic," but I have to admit, I've never seen an early Firebird in that color. It would've looked good.

Re: 1982 Firebird factory colors?

I have seen that before. GM has different names for the same color. Each division (Pontiac, Buick, ets..) may get the same code 75 Red color but then the marketing dept. will give it a name (who would buy red when you can buy Spectra Red ). then the paint supplies may give it a different name all together. The names I listed come from the 82 Pontiac dealer order sheet and guide, however the one you posted I seem more often. The code is the important thing if you need to match it.

Re: 1982 Firebird factory colors?

To wildjeff.....Do you know what sheen the black should be on an 82 red trans am as far as the bottom lower portion of the car? Or does anybody else know? I am in process of having my red trans am painted.

Re: 1982 Firebird factory colors?

Eric:
Low Gloss Black, GM code W30A0848

All:
There are mistakes in the color lists in the posts above.

In 1982, code 84 was not Dark Claret Metallic. Code 84 was Dark Charcoal Metallic.

In 1982, there was not a code 74 color.

My book will be published by the end of this month, hopefully.

Re: 1982 Firebird factory colors?

Thanks Shiftman- I will be buying your book too!! Is "low gloss" considered semi-gloss or satin?

Re: 1982 Firebird factory colors?

Hi Eric,

PPG called it...

"A special Dull Black - Low Gloss Black #19, DDL 9423 (all warehouses - quarts)"

PPG DDL 9423 was the Low Gloss Black used on the 1975-77 Rally Sport Camaro paint jobs. So, this was a black finish used on the exterior of previous F-Body cars. (1978-80 Rally Sports used Gloss Black)

PPG coded this 9423 or 9443, although 9300 could be used with flattener. This is "Low" gloss, but not quite "Flat."

So, I do not know if the "30" black formula qualifies for semi-gloss or satin.

You see, the 30 in the GM code W30A0848 indicates the amount of desired gloss, which is controlled by the amount of flattener added.

In 1982, for Firebird, GM Gloss Black was WA0848. (In 1986 it changed to WA8555.) WA0848 Gloss Black is 100% gloss.

Gloss Black is then cut with a certain percent of flattener to achieve 30% gloss. The W30A0848 formula is 30 percent gloss.

If the paint formula was W60A0848, it would be 60 percent gloss. This formula would have LESS flattener added to WA0848. The 60 formula would be glossier than the 30 formula.

Just a hunch but, the 60 formula would likely be considered semi-gloss, the 30 formula might be considered satin.

RULE: The MORE flattener added to the paint, the LESS gloss to the paint finish. Makes sense.

I believe that wheels were painted with 60-80 percent gloss.

I have no knowledge about the flattener percentages.

Your Fisher Body trim plate on your radiator support panel likely indicates "19M" for the lower Black color of your 75L/75U Trans Am (1982).

Have your paint man do a couple spray-outs with full gloss, 30, and 60 gloss percentages. See what you like best. I truly do not know if that lower black in 1982 was full gloss or not.

Hope this helps.

By the way, my book became available today.
