Kumho tire is allegedly building a tire manufacturing plant up the road from me... They've got a giant lot laid out and a road named after them heading to it, but that whole project has been on hold for 5 or so years now.

Wont help the gatorback situation, though.

Yes, lots of tire companies making tires in America. Just not many AMERICAN tire companies left making tires in America. Goodyear and Cooper are all that's left. And Cooper almost was purchased by an tire maker in India last year.

More from John Kelsey:

I asked:

Are they at least being seriously considered?

He responded:

"Yes. This will be a key size in the future. Again, I wish I had dates for you."

To which I responded:

"Let me know when you might have some idea of timing. There may be immediate interest in at least a couple hundred sets of them."

Charlie - I wonder if they are even doing any R&D to make these or he was humoring you. I could really use a new set of shoes on the TTA.

I think that they are. Not sure how high priority it is however.

Re: If they still offered 245/50/16 Gatorbacks, would you buy them?

Why???Except for originality, again I ask why would you want to run Gatorbacks? I am original owner of an '87 and one set of Goodyear's was enough for me. Back in the day I ran nothing but Dunlop D40's. I have the receipts for the 10 or so sets I put on the rears. Could never figure why the rears wore out faster.....also, curse the engineer who decided to run front/rear wheels preventing rotation! Please explain the reasoning, thanks.

Also, those Dunlop D40s you keep bringing up, haven't been available for many years in our size.

If memory serves, Originally, the Fronts and rears were the same wheel with the 14" & 15" wheels, but when they went to the 8" wide 16" rims, and the 235-50R16 tires the rear wheels noticeably stuck out...

Why they did not just make the rear axle 1/2" narrower is beyond me.

You can use 4 fronts if you wanted to.

I would totally be down! I wish you could get a new set of them today. The Eagle ZR50 Gatorbacks were the first "performance" "low profile" tire that I ever remember seeing when I was growing up.

This is pretty funny. The thread is 3 years old, in that time reproductions for the Mustang have come (and gone?) and still no VR50 or ZR50s for 16's. It's not looking too bright. Maybe it'd be easier to convince another manufacturer just to make a modern tire in a 245/50V or ZR16.

Kelsey did another run of Mustang sized Gatorbacks this month. No idea what the delay is with the 245/50/16 size. They started development of them, including getting OEM samples as models, probably back when I started this thread.

I would buy at least 2 sets! Whenever I see a third gen with Gatorbacks on it, I am always impressed by that. It's all about the details for me, and these tires are so distinctive and so strongly associated with our cars in my mind. If anyone hears that re-pops of them are being sold, please let me know!

I just ordered a set of the Indy 500 Wide Oval summer tires.
My tires were hard as a rock and driving the TTA was dangerous. I figure its cool having Indy 500 tires on a pace car at least.

I have the 245/50R-16 Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500 SL on GM 16x8 alloys.

For anyone waiting on their repro. goodyears, I will say the Indy 500 Firehawks are a great interim tire. We had a monster rainfall around September 7th(?) last year and they had no problem with it for a "summer" tire. I put 40+ miles on them daily and they've been great over the last 9 months.

I have a set of these on my 87... They replaced my Yokohama ES100 tires that I really loved the looks of but hated the fact the ES100's wandered. The Wide Oval 500s are a nice tire, love the tread that looks like the Firebird logo...

Chaps you do realise tires have time limits? A set will generally not be safe after approx 5 years... Worth bearing in mind.

Agreed... When I had my ES100s removed they were 11 years old... When I looked inside, they were still perfect. The CRAZY thing was the company that took them off literally told me they might sell them because they looked like new....

Some tires will give you no warning, others will start to get lumpy, I had a 15 year old set of BF goodrich tires that one was always a bit bouncy, I had it balanced and it never fixed it... one day the tread decided to separate... fortunately I was only going 25mph... Interestingly it still held air.

If you feel a constant lump in your tires, time to let them go.

I have seen 6-8 years MAX on tires before you change them... I guess it depends on if you are driving highway or just around town under 35mph too going to a show...

Tires get hard when they get old. My old Goodyears have no traction on my TTA. Dangerous, at this point. Most tires look good when they are old but should not be driven on.
I like the little logo too. Its one of the reasons I ordered them.

6-8 years max... ummm.. some of us cant plop down that kind of money that often on cars that get little street action. Guess I need to change the hoses/belts that often as well? oh well. I have the originals hoses and belt on and they work still.. I had the original tires on when I got it (about 5 years ago) and drove it on the highway to home (about 100 miles). they rode like bowling *****. slick, spun easy, and hard as them as well. The current ones I have on I don't think I will change in a year or three. as I get < 500 miles on them a year. friend of mine changes every 10 on his 1970 monte carlo and I may match that but likely will go for 12 years. the VR50s were not lumpy at all so I would not put that as the only major criteria for change but if they become slicks in traction yeah.

I had my original Gatorbacks on my car for about 21 years. They looked good, but they were hard and I was afraid to drive them on the highway.

Well, I'm hoping they make progress on this... I'm now in a situation where I can either be financially responsible and sell the original tires (if they're even worth anything) or pay for storage in a city ($$$!). The cost of storage for two years will easily buy a set or two if Kelly or whoever finally decides to reproduce them. I'd hate to part with them, but would feel better if I could find some Good Year Eagle F1 GS-D3s. At least the sidewall and fit of the tire would be the same.

Re: If they still offered 245/50/16 Gatorbacks, would you buy them?

Anybody have a ballpark idea of what a used set of Gatorbacks with about 15000 miles on them would be worth? I've decided to sell mine; the value they'd add to the car if I sold it would not make up for the amount it'll cost to rent a storage facility in the city for a few years.

Those tires were awesome when new. The grip they had saved me on many an occasion. Old, they turned hard and unsafe. They also didn't typically last a ton of miles do my guess is they wouldn't have a ton a value except to a few select buyers. Post pics of their condition and tread left. I might make you an offer.

I paid $600 for the set I bought with fewer miles on them.
