Did Chevy offer an IROC with the L69 H.O motor in 87?
I was looking at cars on Ebay and noticed an ad for a yellow 1987 IROC in fairly nice shape with the L69 H.O and an automatic. I thought this motor had been discontinued by 1987? There is also an 82 Pace car with only 5 miles on it for sale too.

Are you talking about this one? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1987-CHEVROLET-CAMARO-Z28-IROC-Z-305-CI-V8-80K-MILES-NO-RESERVE-/231064483733?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item35cc843795#ht_31913wt_1182
It's an LG4 with an HO air cleaner, installed be a previous owner. Last year for the L69 was '86, although so few were made then, I've never seen on in the flesh.

Yes! Thats the one. It looks like the yellow is not the right shade for one thing. But the motor, (or at least the air cleaner on the motor) is for the L69. Oh you answered my question at the bottom of your post. Thanks. I had a feeling this was not right.

I was reading a letter written to Hemming's Muscle Machines that was published last month and the guy was talking about ordering cars new. He mentioned a car that he ordered back in 1987, a Trans Am I think, and he said that he ran down the checklist ordering the L69 305 with 5 speed, etc, etc. I'd love to write in and say that he didn't, but since the editor didn't make the mistake, I didn't want to rain on another readers letter and call him out on it.

Clearly the build sheet lists an LG4. And if you really want to get picky the air cleaner wing nut is incorrect for the year. One thing that I didn't know is that the base interior is vinyl (62R). I thought that the last year for vinyl seats was '86. Learn something new everyday!

David, the '87 order guide shows the vinyl seats as standard. I agree with you that I thought '86 was the last year. It looks like '88 was the first year for fabric/leather only.

ran down the checklist ordering
He very well might have; won't argue that.
What he checked off, and what the CAR IS, aren't necessarily the same thing.
Kinda reminds me of, some years ago (early-mid 70s... I didn't pick up this hobby until LONG AFTER high school and my first trip through college) when I was new to this hobby, somebody told about somebody that had some heads "out of a Vette" for sale. So I talk to the guy and tell him that's what I want is some Vette heads and he's like, yeah, they'll be out of a Vette, got a coupla sets. I agree to come pick em up. Get out to his place, he walks me out to his back 40, to a stash of derelict parts cars he had (you know, that severe Vette body panel rust) and opens one up, and pulls a pair of heads out from behind the seats and hands em to me. Idiot that I was, I gave him $25 or whatever for em. ALOTTA loot in those days, I was poor for WEEKS afterward. Wasn't until later that I realized they were GARBAGE; 283 2-bbl heads or something. But hey, they were OUT OF A VETTE, right??? I saw it with my own eyes.
Rule #1 of buying used cars or used car parts: Never believe ONE SINGLE WORD out of the mouth of a used car or part seller until you can verify with your own eyes. (or the equivalent)
Corollary #1a: how can you tell he's lying? His lips are moving.
Corollary #1b: how can you tell he's stabbing you in the back? He's smiling.
Rule #2: In case you think he's telling the truth, see Rule #1.
Too bad Rule #1 is as true as it ever was, in this case. The seller makes up this cockamamie story about "checklist", all of a sudden that makes the car something other than what its VIN shows. Yeah right.
