Re: High miles, but nice '92 TA, vert, 5 speed

I like it. Reading the RPO codes was a bit of an up and down rollercoaster. It's a 5spd, but a 305. It's a WS6/FE2 car, but it's only a 3.08 rear car. No N10, R6P, etc either. So in other words, it's a 305 TPI 5spd convertible that might as well be TBI or a V6. With the miles, at least I wouldn't feel too bad dropping in a 3.42 axle, dual cat exhaust, and some other goodies to pep it up a bit, and the price is definitely right.

Re: High miles, but nice '92 TA, vert, 5 speed

I have a 1992 T/A Convertible 305/5 Speed similar to this, although half the miles. All of them (305/5 Speed) came with 3.08 gears. No N10 or R6P. I know you don't trust Compnine, which confirms this, but I have been watching these cars since I've owned mine and they're all the same. Basically, you couldn't get any performance options on these beyond the 305/5Speed and WS6 suspension.

If you can show me that I'm wrong, I'd like to know!

I didn't mean to suggest that the performance options were available on the convertible, but rather that even though it's a LB9/5spd it's not the "Hot" LB9.
Some people would see the LB9/5spd and automatically assume it'd have the full performance package.

The LB9 has the L98 cam and good exhaust, (ie, not the L03 exhaust), but they were all 3.08s and single cats.

I'm not sure where you heard that, but the LB9 without N10 in 91/92 got the L03 exhaust. Y-pipe, converter, intermediate pipe, are all the same part numbers on the 91/92 L03 as the LB9 w/o N10. If not for the heat stove provision on TBI cars, the manifolds would probably be the same part number too.

I don't mind backing up my statements with references, but it'd save me so much time if folks would just have a little faith.

That's interesting. I always thought the 5 speed, non-N10, '91-'92 LB9s got the 2.25" exhaust manifolds and 2.75" I- pipe, where the autos got the L03 exhaust. Good to know, thanks.

It's a somewhat logical conclusion that many people would make. That's why I pointed out the L03-ness of the LB9 without the "Performance Enhancement Group". GM calls out the difference in the 91 Firebird brochure, stating that the LB9 is 205hp in the Trans Am; Formula 4spd auto. 230hp in the Trans Am with 5spd AND the Performance Enhancement Group; Formula and GTA with 5spd. In effect stating that if you order a LB9 Trans Am and want the higher output engine, the PEG has to be selected. On an adjacent page, it shows the PEG "not available on convertible".

I really wasn't trying to say there were convertibles with all the go-fast options. I was emphasizing that just because it's a five speed doesn't mean it's not the slow variety of 305 that got these cars such a bad rap.

That is nifty, watching.
I think my JY 92 TA WS6 vert has the super cool 2.73 posi rear gear.

The car looks great IF you use night vision goggles on some of the photos.

25 HP lost right there in the exhaust manifolds and y-pipe. That's some restrictive sh!+

From this point forward, maybe we should call it the "peanut exhaust"?

Looks like you just coined a new term, Charles

Nice car. I'd buy it for 7 grand and enjoy it as-is...maybe paint it down the road. At least I wouldn't have to be neurotic about miles...

Re: High miles, but nice '92 TA, vert, 5 speed

I like convertibles. I've had them since I was a teenager, and I currently have a 4th gen convertible. I also like 3rd gens for all the obvious reasons, including the 91 5 speed TA convertible in post #1. But somehow the slant of the hatch and the T top roof is what gives a 3rd gen it's personality which is missing in a convertible.

Is the seller a member on here? I'd like to see more pictures of the other T/A convertible in the background of a couple of those pics. It looks to have a leather interior.

I almost bought this car but the miles scared me away. I bought another on eBay for about the same price but I really think the one in th OP would have been the better car. I bought an automatic with black leather but turns out the interior isn't original, thanks seller...

This one with above item number. Pics look way nice than it actually is. I'm getting it painted soon, going with original color. Also no tag showing options but it is a trans am by the vin. Interior has been painted and some of the seat belts have been partially painted, sure wish I would have known. I was told original interior. It runs good but I'm not too fond of the loud exhaust, guess I'm getting old...

Re: High miles, but nice '92 TA, vert, 5 speed

I ran the VIN on your Trans Am. Regarding the interior, your Trans Am originally had the tan interior and tan top.

The SPID sticker should be on the inside wall of the center console. Even though the later T-Top/Hardtops moved them to the locking compartment, the Convertibles kept them in the center console.

If you don't have the SPID, I can email you the RPO codes for your VIN.
