Seat removal

Ok this is gonna sound really lame, and it’s really getting to me. I’m trying to remove the driver seat from my firebird, but I’m running into an issue the I got 3 of the 4 nuts off easy as pie, the two fronts, and the rear passager side one. I have been trying for the last couple of days to get it off, WD40, wait a bit get the open-end wrench turn applying pressure (did this for a few hours) and after that I figured that I’m not applying enough pressure so I got my framing hammer and gave it a few good whacks well the wrench slipped off rounding off the nut. So now I’m really torqued off, so I left it and went to do something else next day I went to get one of those wrenches that you can use on rounded off nuts, well it fits on, but no room to move it in the right direction. I would cut it off, but I don’t know if I can get to the bolt to replace it and I can’t seem to get a socket on it that will fit under the seat. I would try kroil and a blow torch, but you know the carpet (even though I’m trying to replace it) I really would like to keep the slide thing that the seat slides on because that’s still good and just needs some paint. Anybody know what I can do to get this off? Cause I really want to replace the interior because the guy I bought it from smoked something and I’m not into having my interior smelling like that

Oh sorry im gonna try to get pictures to ya, soon, but im hoping that y'all know what im talking about

Re: Seat removal

If its that seized on the stud is going to break off anyway. With rounded off bolts and nuts I have always taken a socket that nearly fits and then hammered it on by force and have always had luck. Push the seat all the way up and do that.

In this situation there is little to no room for him to use vice grips.

i did slide the seat is up, but what would happen if i break off the stud? an i really sunk? i dont know how i would replace something like that, altho i would presume it involves wielding... and something tells me i shouldn't play with fire... as much fun as it would be , and i am replacing the interior so maybe something with fire would solve my problem

You can grind the surface smooth and put a large self tapping screw into support beam. That would work just fine. Even if you do break it the seat will hold with 3 bolts and since the broken one is on the back you will never notice because your weight will be shifted against the seat track support. But still a self tapping screw will fix it no problem.

Re: Seat removal

To everybody thank you a ton, i didnt even know that there was such a tool, and there is a harbor freight on the way to my GF's house so ill swing by . Im more than conferable with 3 studs for the chair, but my GF hates the car already and is worried the fact the car doesnt have airbags and such so fining out that the drivers seat isnt being held in with 4 nuts would send her though the roof. Once again, it may seam small to you guys, but i was lossing faith in my skills and this project so thanks for the help

Re: Seat removal

I took it to my mechanic and he popped it off in a second with an impact wrench. Although, mine wasn't rounded off...so I don't know how that would work...

Re: Seat removal

Well i went to buy the nut splitter, and got the nut kinda splinted, altho i forgot that the washer type thing thats attached to the nut so im kinda having to cut the stud off now is there a way that i can wield another stud in place, or is it but better of self tapping screw?

Re: Seat removal

do you have a dremel with a cutting blade, use it the rest of the way on the nut.try any thing but do not cut the stud, it will never be right again

Re: Seat removal

WD-40 is for lubrication. Did you try some penetrating oil like PB blaster?

Re: Seat removal

well i have gone the pass the point of any real means of getting a wench or socket on it, so when i get paid ill have to by a dremal, and maybe a tap/die set so if there is an thing left on the stud that im hoping the dremal will take off can clear the threads, but did think of using kroil and some map gas torch but i didnt think it would be a good idea to use a torch around the seat and carpet, even tho i was wanting to redue the interior im gonna try and take some pictures of whats left soon.

IIRC, the studs are welded to the floor and the seats sit on top with nuts above them? Craftsman makes a bolt extractor set that is basically a socket that spins off rounded off nuts. Will give more grip. You could try those. They're a great tool, so even if it doesn't work for this, you'll be thankful you have them around.

But seriously, I'd try some PB blaster first. Spray it and let it sit overnight. Spray it again and go to work. If I'm wrong, you're out $5. WD-40 isn't a penetrating oil.
