Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

I think that a lot of people on here are asking the same question: What seats will fit in my ThirdGen? Well i think it would be a good idea to come up with a list of them, so post any seats you know of that will bolt right into a 3rd generation Camaro. Just list the year, make, and model of the car, and any positives or negatives about the seats!

Keep Going Guys! This is a great start!

-1982-2002 Camaro
-1982-2002 Firebird
-1982-2005 Cavalier
-1995-2005 Sunfire
-1982-1994 Sunbird
-1985-1998 Grand am
-1984-1988 Fiero
-1987-1996 Beretta
-1994 GMC Jimmy (Rail Swap)

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

do the 4th gen seats sit lower and if so how much lower?
editk never mind i found my answer! for anyone else wondering they do sit lower but you can add 1/2" spacers to raise it back up a bit if needed.

Correct, I went with 1/2" because if you go much more than that you will start seeing the spacers. Right now I used 1/2" aluminum spacers and you can't even see them....man what a huge difference.

I don't feel like a little kid driving his dads car for the first time anymore, couldn't see over the hood I'm 36 years old and 5' 6".

Just about any seats will fit if you know how to use a tape measure and drill holes in a steel plate. That's all it takes to make an adapter bracket.

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

-1982-2005 Cavalier seats
-1995-2005 Sunfire seats
-1982-1994 Sunbird seats
-1985-1998 Grand am seats (note: early grand am GT in '88 or '89 came with the ultima seat like the GTA. I find there normally in the fully loaded ones. Also, around '94, give or take a few years, some grand ams came with a seat that was pretty much the same as 4th gen seats, but a bit softer and had a different headrest. Later, some grand am GT seats came with leather.)
-1984-1988 Fiero seats (Not too sure on this one. never put them in my car, but my friend said he has before)
-1987-1996 Beretta seats(Once again, have not put them in my car, but I have seen em in a third-gen at a car show once)

My third gen has seen a wide array of seats haha. All these seats require the third gen track to directly bolt into the car. I'm sure there are a ton other seats out there that bolt up directly, but these are the ones im sure that work. Hope this helps!
(Oh, and none of the back seats out of these cars will bolt into the back of a third gen)

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

Beretta seats are not by any means a direct swap.... i'm running 96 Z26 fronts in my car and the entire rails had to be swapped, holes had to be drilled for the camaro tracks. Not a big deal at all, but they are definatly not a direct swap like this thread is making it seem. Had them recevered along with the stock camaro rear seat to match. they do look good, however there is no loop for the seat belt and that gets kind of annoying after a while.

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

I put some very nice Saturn seats into the Forumula, similar shape to original seats, but much better fabric, sturdier internal frame and way better seatbelt guide (on headrest). You need to swap the mounts, but they otherwise bolt up and are the same height.

I wouldn't put any other seat in a camaro, but those seats in my 97 Z24, were pretty damn comfortable.

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

Autotec101 posted that he installed Eagle Talon seats into his car and that they were "nearly a direct fit" and that he used the rear top portion and recovered the 3rd gen rear lower with the talon fabric.

It would be nice to know what exactly he had to do because I would assume that the Laser and Eclipse seats would fit as well. I'm interested in the 3000GT/Stealth leather seats too.

But the 3000GT VR4 seats are more agressive.

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

These are out of a '99 Camaro. Near perfect match for the '87 interior. Drivers seat fit perfectly. Passenger seat needs 3rd. gen seat rails.

The passenger side will likely need spacers in the back. The drivers is power so it's adjustable.

Exactly what I'm going with. I have the pass side and the rear so far, just need a driver side.
Just a gigantic improvement over the stock IROC seats

i put 2002 trans am seats in my 90 camaro - all leather and electric, not one problem.
but you have to cut that bar that goes across the hump and holds the dual rear folding seats. it is not needed and can be cut off with ease. if you leave it on you have this piece of metal that sticks out from the carpet and into the elbow of anyone sitting in the back seats. LOL - sitting in the back seats. no one sits in my back seats, except me when i tested them out.

anyone know if the new gen GTO seats will fit in? i found a nice local deal on some black leather goat seats and since i've always wanted a GTO (though the older models), it'd be a little taste hehe

If a pick and pull type yard is near you see if they have a 3rd gen and a Cadillac Cattera and do some test fitting.

The Caddy has the same floor pan as the Goat and the seat frames should be the same as well.

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

Did two seat swaps today. Got front seats out of a 05 sunfire. put them in my son's 91 rs. Also got front seats out of 99 cavalier for my 89 vert. They were not direct bolt in, You need to swap the seat rails on both, not a big deal. I saw someone laughed at the thought of cavalier seats in a camaro. They are made with the same lack of quality as the original 3 gen seats, so no difference.LOL. They do look ok and are more comfortable. worth the 50 bucks a set we paid.

I have a 97 sunfire and a 97 grand am, but I wouldn't use the seats because the back seat of the car would look funny because it wouldn't match

I'm really not that familiar with the 4th gen seat, but i'm interested. Is the back seat a direct swap?

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

4th gen seats and the like are an easy cheap shortcut, but they've been so popular for so many years now that they're really getting old. I don't know about everyone else, but I'm getting sick of the half *** hack jobs. Be unique and fix/restore the stock seats. When they were new they were nicer then 2/3rds of the seats suggested here anyway.

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

So you re-upulster the rears or take them out, I'm recovering a set of 4th gen power TA's in leather grain pleather with diamond tectured bolsters and inserts.

Drew I'm not doing the 4th gen seats to be different or make my car look "trick" they are better more supportive and more comfortable seats than the stockers. The originals are still pretty comfortable but they feel more like family sedan buckets than actual sports car seats.

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

The 4th gen Firebird seats are the most supportive and they're a direct rip-off, cheapened evolution of the Ultima seats. The 4th gen Camaro seats are almost exactly the same high back bucket that was used in the 82 Camaro. The adjustable Lear seats, factory installed Recaros, and all of the custom Camaro seats are better seats then 4th gen Camaro seats. I've had 4th gen seats and they're no better then stock thirdgen seats.

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

You could be right, I have never been in a car with the 3rd gen ultima seats though I'm not a fan of the "ET the extra terrestrial" looking head rests and I have only sat in the recaros in a junkyard. No experience with the lear's either though I have driven a few 4th gen Camaros with the high backs.

They are comfortable enough though less plush than most Firebird seats. I dont think they are the same as the early 3rd gen Camaros though.

I also have a set of 4th gen non power Firebird seats, they seem to be just plusher versions of the 4th gen Camaro seats with an adjustable head rest. Deeper bolstered and less plush than my stock 3rd gen TA's.

I feel the 4th gen power seats offer the best overall combination of comfort and holding power though they are heavy as all hell!

If weight was a concern I would go with the manual 4th gens. But this car will see some serious long road trips and the power option is well worth the weight penalty.

Completely agree. I got tired of seeing everyone do the 4th gen seat swap. They are nice seats but EVERYONE and their moms has em. So...i did LSC's instead. Very supportive and 18 different adjustments. Cost an arm and a leg the way i did it but i dont regret it.

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

Ok, i'm picking up a set of 4th gen camaro seats tomorrow... just clarify. I can remove my 3rd gen seats, and the hole pattern from the 4th gen seats will line up with the 3rd gen bolts sticking up out of my floorpan?

I know that is what seems to be siad on this thread, but I keep seeing mentions of swapping rails, and manufacturing adapters. I need to make sure I'm not missing something obvious... is it really THAT easy?

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

They should bolt in directly if you got everything.

Just wondering, did you get the power seats or manuals? Theres a HUGE weight difference. My manual 4th gens are feather weights compared to the power versions, it took me proabably 15 minutes to cary both power seats from the car I pulled them from to the gate to pay for them. Proabably 60 or 70 yards up hill. I had to keep putting them down and I even just dropped them a couple of times they were so heavy.

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

they are manuals. I'm pretty sure.. I guess I need to ask the guy I'm buying them from.

You say... "if you got everything" you mean there's more than the rails and the feet that the floor bolts go through?

Im not sure what he meant by "got everything" either but to clarify....they are a direct bolt in. No mods. Just bolt in and go.

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

great! these are z28 seats from a 2000....

My seats look ok, but the foam feels like it's been compressed so much it's like riding a park bench. After seeing what it would take to refurbish my originals, I'm going to get these to ride on in the meantime.

I would love to put the originals back in again someday, if I can find some good matching fabric, or a fresher drivers seat

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

Thats what I meant, as long as you got everything attached to the seats you'll be fine.

My stock seats are just like that, the fabric is almost perfect but the foam is dead, especialy the drivers seat left bolster.

I'm trying to comeup with a way to deal with the volutes on my power seats though. I could always re-use the originals but they are charcoal where the rest will be black, and they will look kinda old and worn next to new vinyl and or leather.

I could pleat the vinyl in that area or use a streatchy fabric. I think they look kinda stupid anyway so if I can hide them or get rid of them all together I would be happy.

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

The fourth gen seats bolt right on, no adjustments are necessary at all. Front and back both work. I did it to my 84 trans am and it worked great. I think they were from a camaro. They are more supportive and more comfortable, by far. I was sure glad I had them when I went on a 6 hour trip last summer that got to be like 8 hours because of weather- My brother and I were comfortable the whole time. (although the damn driveshaft shaking and vibrating got old real quick)

I guess though that mine came with the tracks on them, because I took out the seats, and all that was left were the bolts on the floor. The tracks for the new seats matched right up. I am like the only one in my area with a third-gen, so I am not worried about what "everyone else" has lol. They are relatively cheap, comfortable, and available. What more could you want?

They are lower than the original seats, I don't know by how much though. Maybe an inch or so. It was perfect for me though because I am tall (6'1'') and the extra space gave me more room for my mohawk

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

I ended up not buying the seats for two reasons... they were a lot more worn than the seller indicated, and I decided if I'm going to reaplce my seats, I'd rather have the lighter grey interior than the charcoal grey, it will look better with the interior scheme.

I want to see this. I drive an 87 Camaro. And a 1996 3000GT i would pick the 3000GT seats any day over any seat. They are comfortable, keep you in one spot when turning and look way better.

Re: Clear The Confusion - 3rd Gen Seats

I've joined in road trips, in both '92 and '96 'maros, both had stock seats. The '92 was lower mileage. I can't agree with Drew about them being the same. I spent many hours in both, and the '96s are the ones I want. But they're in high demand. I can, and probably will, settle for a pair of Cavalier seats. The supply is virtually limitless, and the cost couldn't realistically get much lower.
