Info about HVAC controls

Hi guys

I have a list of thing I don't know precisely how to use on my GTA

This is a fast question, if someone would be so gentle to help me. I don't know the meaning if those controls:

1- what is the diff between air cond "Max" and "Norm"?

2- what is air cond "bi-lev"?

3- how does the two Economy modes work?

plus:

4- does the T/A has foot air?

THANKS GUYS

bye

1- what is the diff between air cond "Max" and "Norm"?
Max= recirculation
Normal= max AC w/out recirculation

2- what is air cond "bi-lev"?
Hi-lev= vents and foot wells

3- how does the two Economy modes work?
Economy= outside air w/out your AC compressor running.

plus:

4- does the T/A has foot air?- yes, as long as your lines are correct.

Please note: this is contingent that the colored rubber hoses behind controls and your flapper doors operate correctly. I had a 92 Formula WS6 that worked flawlessly, yet a 91 camaro that didn't work well at all. Upon replacing the heater core I noticed some marti gras beads must have fallen through the upper vent and prevented the doors from closing, and also the colored vacuum lines were switched back there...I'm guessing during a botched cassette player install.
Most of the time cars this old have been fiddled with by shatty "mechanics" much like myself 15-20 yrs ago lol. Grab some diagrams and make sure everything is copacetic. You'd be amazed how well the old non electronic systems work when they are in good working condition.

THANKS GUYS

bye
Hopefully this helps.

Re: Info about HVAC controls

Thank you very much BrutalT/A, very usefull

However I didn't quite understand what is the difference between "Economy Vent" and "Economy HTR".

Tomorrow I'll try to meticulously check how much air exits from every vent and I'll come here to tell you.

THANKS again

Economy vent will blow air based on temp setting without AC compressor"less strain on engine "better mileage". Economy HTR is your heater setting, just recycled coolant through heater core, so it's "economy" as it doesn't draw any power from your accessories.

Re: Info about HVAC controls

Today when I stop the car I tried the two economy modes, but neither lead to any air from foot wells nor front vents. Air motor was running but car was stop, perhaps it has to be started for air to flow somehow? Strange but real.

Sadly I think it could be as you said: some lines could be obstructed :'(

thanks Brutal

When I have the dash off, I always clean out the ducts to stop the rotted foam from flying through and wipe them with a Clorox wipe. Then seal the connections with the silver AC tape. Helps give a stronger air flow and since we have no filter cleaning them out helps with any funny smells.

I'd start by removing the console or upper console pod Depending on your flexability. You can usually access most of the big stuff back there. Make sure the colored vacuum lines aren't leaking as well.

How is the transistor that's on the blower motor under the hood?
They break and are cheap. Usually cause only hi and low speed operations. Nothing in between.

What is that "transistor" suppose to be? I've never heard about it So sorry but I'm new of the "under the car's hood" world

THANKS!

Re: Info about HVAC controls

Thank you man!

But does the blower motor resistor handle? I mean, what is its purpose?

thanks!

Re: Info about HVAC controls

Allows all four speeds of the blower to work.

Re: Info about HVAC controls

My heater doesn't blow as hard as it should on any speed, could that also be the resistor, or is the motor itself going out? It blows at maybe 65% speed or so.

Re: Info about HVAC controls

If it changes speeds but never as fast as it should, then it's the blower motor.
If it is only one or two different speeds on any setting, then it's the resistor.

Yip, it changes speed, but it never goes as fast as it should. Crap, that's $60 or so if I want to mess with it. I'll probably leave it alone, it works well enough for now

Re: Info about HVAC controls

Also possible the blower is being gummed up with debris, old foam seal or rodent nest. Also check the harness on engine side for corroded or loose connector.

Re: Info about HVAC controls

Ok. Had a couple of those thoughts too. Wouldn't be too hard to pull the motor/connectors and check them for 22 years of crud. Thx....
