OEM Horn Installation

1989 Camaro RS Convertible.

Stock Rectangular Horn Button...

Electrically my horn works, but I'm not sure how the tiny fricking widgets are supposed to go in.

I have the factory manual & there are no good pictures or diagrams of how the small bits go together. That I can find in my copy.

Thus far no luck with Google images either...

I'm attaching some pictures of what I have, if someone can shed some light on whether I have everything I need & how it's supposed to go together.

It's been year's since I had a unmolested 3rd gen steering wheel & functioning horn apart so I'm scratching my head on this one.

I've attached a few pictures, its the little bits that Have me confused, I'm sure they go under the metal tab & into the hole underneath it in the steering wheel but what order the bits go in, direction, Is there anything else I need etc is the big problem and no I didn't take this one apart to begin with.

Thanks in advance.

Re: OEM Horn Installation

All three parts go in the end of the turn signal cancel cam that protrudes through the steering wheel hub when it's installed. They go in the column BEFORE the steering wheel, so set the wheel and the horn button aside for now.

First drop the spring in the cancel cam tube, then the pin flat rimmed end first, then the black plastic locking ring slips over the small end of the pin. Push in to compress the spring, and turn to lock into the cancel cam.

Are you saying these are not part of the horn?

No, I'm saying they're not part of the steering wheel. They're part of the column, before you install the steering wheel.

This is a photo of an airbag column, so it's a little different, but the only part that matters is the cancel cam. In this column it's gray, in yours it might be gray or green or white, it's the tube we're concerned with. The end of the tube should have a hook like the one in the photo. It's not unusual for age and spring tension to break the hook. If the hook is gone and you just have a chunk missing you need to replace the turn signal cancel cam or cut a new hook...

The parts drop in as shown here.

Spring first.

Pin next, rimmed end first. The black lock goes in last, the stubs sticking out lock into the hook to retain the parts in the cancel cam. Then your steering wheel goes on.

When you're finished, the top of the pin will press against the back side of this tab.

Re: OEM Horn Installation

Makes more sense now thanks, sounds like I might have something going on with my turn signal cancel cam, the turn signals work, but the horn only works if I jump the metal tang on the steering wheel.

I'll pull steering wheel off & take a look.

The one in my picture is a NOS one I've been hanging on to.
