LS1 swap using 700r4, need some pointers
after putting my small block tpi into the high 12s i was hungry for more, so here i am diving into an LS1.
my 700r4 is freshly rebuild and ready for serious punishment, that along with my new vigilante converter is why im not switching to 4l60E.
i already have the hughes flexplate and spacer.
other things i know im going to have to rectify are the tv detent cable hook up, vss, and converter lockup.
i know bowtie perfomance sells a $160 detent cable kit for ls1 but that seems a little steep.. is there anyone who has done something else/ found a cheaper way.
as far as lockup goes i think im going to have to go with a vacume switch because the ls1 harness i have is for a t56..
the vss is a big unknown for me.. my transmission is a 1989 and did not come with a vss. I would like to do the external mounted reluctor on the tailshaft / slip yoke of the driveshaft.
Does anyone know what parts i need for this or know anything about a kit? BTW i have factory aluminum driveshaft, but i dont think it makes a difference.
originally i was planning on not having one but iv heard about stalling issues without the vss.
im not worried about the dip stick or missing one bellhousing bolt.
any info greatly apreciated

Re: LS1 swap using 700r4, need some pointers
Mimic this geometry with some sort of fabrication and function will be the same
VSS is a tricky situation. Some have gotten close (not perfect) with directly wiring the stock electric VSS to the LSx PCM and recalculating a conversion factor. VSS drive/driven gears, rear end gear, tire size, ppm to ppr all factor into the calculation
Others use an interface box like dakota digital
Im using a differential reluctor ring from JTR to send the proper 40ppr signal
Several companies offer cable to electric VSS adapters that draw a signal from the cable without interfering with the speedo
VSS is required. Some manage to tune around it, but its not easy or recommended
Vacuum switch is the only automated lockup control available. Manual switches work, but lets face it, youll get tired of flicking a switch everytime you shift to 4th gear
Dipstick is easy, reuse the old one and attach it with a 3/4" conduit clamp to the back of the cyl head
In all seriousness, there is atleast one solution to every problem you may run into, but the simplest solution is to use some form of electronic transmission

I've done this with no issues, the bowtieoverdrive kit is the best you'll find and well worth the money, the VSS is not an issue, is it a cable speedo?

From experience both ways, I much prefer to have the converter lockup regulated by engine vacuum. TCI's kit is cheaper than the one from Painless Wiring, and the TCI kit looks to have some adjustability, but I keep buying the Painless stuff.

Re: LS1 swap using 700r4, need some pointers
i think i am going to buy the tci vacume switch for the converter, the tv detent cable i may try to make a bracket or something, but the vss is tricky.... i dont want to put one in the differential..
its too bad there isnt a kit for this... at least i cant find one
thanks for the info so far

Re: LS1 swap using 700r4, need some pointers
hello, i am going to run one off the speedo cable... heres my question.. the automatic vss needs a 40pulse per rev signal and the manula needs 17 pulse per rev... [ i think] ive heard that when running the 700r4 you should use a manual tune.... so should i run a 17 pulse vss or 40?

You're going to need to have the ecm tuned anyway for your setup, I'd recommend going with whatever the 4L60e uses (Jags that Run sells a kit for the reluctor wheel and will sell you a sensor too)

Re: LS1 swap using 700r4, need some pointers
im gonna go with the vss that is run by the speedo cable drive.... but im failing to understand why you would want a 40 pulse vss if im going to run a manual tune to avoid all of the extra crap that the 4l60e tune...
?

17 or 40 pulse input signal is something you need to work out with your tuner. He will have a speed log when he is doing the tune. Just compare to your actual speedo and adjust until its close

Re: LS1 swap using 700r4, need some pointers
okay.. that makes sense... i do all of my own tuning [TPI] and will be tuning my ls1 when i buy the software.... i can divide the 40 pulse to close but not perfect... is 16 pulse per rev close enough or do you think it needs to be exact.. thanks for the info
i was thinking of buying the dakota digital box that can divide or multiply the signal.. that would work as well i suppose

IIRC the '89 Camaro has a cable driven speedo, in which you would have to use a Dakota Digital to get the cable output anyway to the speedo.

Re: LS1 swap using 700r4, need some pointers
i am going to run a jags that run cable driven vss between the tranny and my mechanical speedo, hopefully i can use hptuners make the value correct. If its not capable i would have to buy the dakota digital box.

just a little update on the build, ive got the motor and tranny in, exhaust is almost finished, fuel lines done, now working on cooling hoses, wiring, still have to install pushrods and many little odds and ends...

Re: LS1 swap using 700r4, need some pointers
how come? i consider it a manditory upgrade, ive ripped the stock ones several times. i dont mind vibration over broken mount.

Re: LS1 swap using 700r4, need some pointers
back from the dead... thank you "search"
speedmachine got a few questions
i have the same set for many years now except i am now adding the hawks long tube.
question 1 is how did you mod your gear cable? looks like its flipped so it go up??
2, with your stock trany mount how much ground clearance do you have as the exhaust drops to clear it?
3 how far back is your cat and do you have any trouble with e test if its way back?
cheers scott
