L99 6.2L 6L80 Swap

Got a 1982 Trans Am currently using an EFI406/4L60E combo controlled by the 0411 PCM thanks to EFI Connection's 24X conversion. Tuned by myself.

It was built to be a torque monster and in that respect it has succeeded beautifully. I take folks for a ride just playing in town and they swear it's supercharged. Even played with a CTS-V sedan and he didn't pull away too much at all.

Anyways, I get about 19 mpg and I'm looking for better mileage and more power and this certainly seems to be a good direction to go. I've dealt with upgraded camshafts on a couple occasions and prefer to just stay all stock as far as the powertrain goes. I will be tuning it myself though since GM is extremely conservative with VVT and ignition timing on these engines, not to mention fueling is jacked in the PE tables from the factory.

What I'm getting at is this: I've seen where we have all joked around about donations and all but I have found this site that actually helps one receive donations! I just made a profile and decided what the heck, it can't hurt to try right? Give it a try for yourselves and if anyone would like to see someone else put something to the test, like I'm wanting to do, go for it and donate a few dollars! Fantastic idea I think. Has the potential for a wonderful tool.

Now, I'm not asking for anything at all, although it would be nice to have some financial help here. But, if anything good comes of this and I'm able to make progress, I will post everything I can here as an extremely thorough write-up on the engine swap, fitting the trans, all the wiring, and detailed tuning of the VVT for any and all that are interested. I plan to buy a wrecked 2010+ Camaro SS automatic from Copart to use as a donor car.

So please, even moral support is welcomed along with any comments or suggestions. Spread the word if you don't mind. This could be a great tool that we can all use for future builds if it works!

So far it looks to be a good idea. $30 closer to my goal. I still think you guys should give it a try for your projects. Can't hurt.

I did a similar swap On a 1991 camaro convertible last summer I used a fourth gen oil pan which fit well,but be aware that if you want to keep the DOD and VVT that the L99 comes with you need to put the oil pressure relief valve in the oil pan. I tried with out it and the oil pressure was so high that it over powered the solidoids in these systems. I had a place called Wegner motor sports TIG weld in a bung to place the valve in. I will be trying this new pan in spring when warm up in Wisconsin. If you don't keep The DOD+VVT you will need to change the oil pump.

That's some good info there, thank you for that. I had no knowledge of a pressure relief valve in the oil pan. Good to know about it though since I do plan on keeping AFM and VVT.

Off topic, but what do you think about the new Gen 5 small block?
The trucks are going to get 5.3L and 6.2L versions. Can't wait for those to become common in the junks yards. Gen 5 5.3L sounds perfect for a mild turbo setup.

The catch on those will be the fuel system, Very high pressure

I work at a Jaguar Land Rover dealership and was talking to one the techs a while back, he said the DI system on their V8 operates at 3,600 psi. using a lift pump in the tank and two high pressure pumps that were timed with each other and the engine.

do you have any pics or parts numbers ? I’m doing a l99 6l80 swap in a 86 Camaro and I want to keep vvt for now.

Do you plan on the L99 cam and lifters or changing to an after market cam and lifters? You can disable the AFM in the tune but if you change cams you have change lifters as well. Read some of my other posts, most of the details are in them.
