Looks like he had the 5.3 in a old C series pickup pulled it and then pulled the engine that was in his F-body dropped it in there and is making a turbo setup. Be easier to understand if there was notations with the pictures though.

Craptastic video of it building a bit of boost, rolling in till about half throttle.
I have now cleaned some wiring up and changed wastegate springs, now building about 13psi. Hope to have track times this Friday. For me it's always hard to judge how car will run once you reach a certain threshold, but it feels really strong.

Well I was hoping for a little better run but considering not building boost through first due to gears and running fat with low timing 11 psi boost. Left lane 12.8 109 mph

Congrats on the straight pass. I think you are well below where you should be. Most likely not boosting in low gears is where you're loosing your speed as it obviously picks up towards the end. I say let it eat! I think this car has a 10 sec pass in it if you can leave on boost.

Best time from tonight 11.5 119mph this is 12lbs boost 11deg timing. I am convinced there is a high 10 pass on the next track outing.

Good job!!!! That's more like it, you are gettin really close. That 10 has been alluding me as well. So far 11.3 @ 127 spitting out pistons on the stripe. Back with a 5.3 now, but waiting a while before I turn up the wick again so you will prob reach 10.9x before me. I'm rootin for you though! 119 is making power especially in our heavy cars.
What do you plan on turning up the boost to?

put some timing in that thing thats why its running so slow
18* of timing and that thing will prolly pick up a full second , and u should prolly be closer to 22* of timing

It's a ARC8000, very nice switch/relay setup.

Edit: It's performance is right where it should be for a stock cam at the boost level.

Re: 1986 5.3 TH400 Ebay GT45 SWAP! UPDATE 11.5 119mph
I am spraying 70/30 mixture. Sadly I am not even sure what nozzle I have, its a crap ebay meth kit using what ever they shipped. 14-16 deg timing will be the max this motor will see. I actually had 14deg timing in that 11.5 sec run but something was pulling timing. I expect it was burst knock but I will have to get back to the track for more testing.

Re: 1986 5.3 TH400 Ebay GT45 SWAP! UPDATE 11.5 119mph
14 deg sounds pretty safe to me. I don't think he is anywhere near too low. Too low of timing all i know can do is burn an exhaust valve or make it glow and cause auto-ignition. So long as afr is in the safe area. i learned to creep up timing 1 degree at a time and stop when it stops picking up. Back with the old carbureted stuff it was a pain to adjust the distributor ignition so most people did 2-3 deg adjustments to tune. Also a change to total advance resulted in change in idle advance so it required constant fiddling. With the turbo stuff we are pushing stuff way harder than the old stuff so the margin for error gets much smaller. Thank goodness with fuel injection we can easily change a degree at a time and be exact with it.
You seem like you got it figured out already. My point is consensus right now for turbo guys is don't listen to what ppl on the net are telling you far as timing. Dude above might run on 22 degrees but lots of people have broken their motors with less than that.

Time for a small update. I have added Ebay head studs and LS1 headgasket. Boost is turned up to 18psi with 10 deg timing. I will be going to the track this Friday and let it eat or blow.

I'm running E85 10 psi and 20-21 degrees of timing. Plug is asking for more timing. No meth, no IC. Read the plugs.

I haven't seen what converter you have in that? Stall? Chassis settings? Transbrake?
Looks like the 60' is where your loosing it all at... but it is very cool you picked up 10 miles an hour

What plugs are you using? The timing is really low. There is no reason you can't use 15 psi with 15* timing to start on meth.

Re: 1986 5.3 TH400 Ebay GT45 SWAP!
There has not been much chassis work done, it has a ford 9" with drag shock.
I am leaving off the footbrake building maybe 1psi boot at launch. That is the reason for poor 60ft times.
I also done a complete brake job last night. I don't think the rear brakes were even working due to bad brake cylinders, I hope that helps my 60ft times by holding boost at the line.

We will see what timing it likes tonight at the track. I am going to start out with 18psi and about 12 deg timing.

You should leave all your timing in it until about 6 psi, start pulling timing out. Should help you get that thing lit and pull like a freight train.

Add 8 degrees of timing down low, try 28, then ramp down after, the engine is NA until you hit boost, that's why it's lazy on the front half.

I am ditching the GT45 for the new ON3 78/76. I am hoping it can truly put down 800whp that they are claiming. Pulling the motor do upgrade oil pump and throw a set of ported 862 heads and upgrading the converter.

Re: 1986 5.3 TH400 Ebay GT45 SWAP! UPDATE 11.5 119mph
I think you have more left with the gt45, we have almost the same turbo kit (truck manifolds, crossover pipe with y merge at the flange, gt45 turbo). So i would think you should be putting out similar mph at the same boost so maybe you have a boost leak or something. I'm sure you can wring 800 hp out of one if you sprayed methanol to cool iat or ran an air to water. Btw I almost bought that on3 but the customer service horror stories turned me off from them. If you do go that route, i'm curous how much you pick up. Seems like a great wheel combo for our engines.
