Re: My 1986 IROC build thread *PIC HEAVY*

Made some more progress, got the head apart and all cleaned up. Lapped in the new valves and cc'd them to make sure I wasnt chaning the compression to much. Ended up sticking with the beehives as the PAC's were a little more pressure then i wanted to run over the nose, so in turn i knocked some seat pressure out of the beehives and I am now sitting at 135 on the seat and 340 open. Got the heads together and they are now ready to bolt on.

Re: My 1986 IROC build thread *PIC HEAVY*

Got the heads back on last night, Switched to a Felpro MLS steel head gasket aswell, I picked up a bit of compression with the new valves aswell, which puts me at 10.25:1 now.

Had to switch to a seven degree keeper/retainer as I had no radial groove 10 degree keepers in stock. I have ordered some PAC titanium retainers and will switch them out later on.

What are your current seat and open pressures? 7 degree stuff scares me

130/340, The plan is to switch is all out for super 7 stuff once it arrives, I may still convince myself to switch to the PAC 1221's with the titanium super seven keepers and retainers.

super 7's are a good deal, but for 340 open pressure i think it may be a little over kill but if your trying to get the lightest valve train possible that isnt a bad way to go. its also a hydraulic too so im not sure how much thats even going to help given that your limited in rpm. if your trying to get the valve train under control why not go with a bigger rate spring?

just looked up the 1221 springs. i would go that route. curious to see if that alone would make a big difference

With the steel manley valves and the beehives we were pulling this this to 6800 on the dyno no problem. I think I may go the 1221 route and pull it to 7000 on the dyno. I doubt it will give me problems especially with the lighter valves. My only major beef with the 1221's is the fact that they are 360 over the nose. This only has a cast core cam and I wanna have it last till the next time I freshen it.

Re: My 1986 IROC build thread *PIC HEAVY*

I ordered a cam through comp that was going to be on a cast core and I ran 500 open on that cam and he talked me into getting it on a billet cam core which was only like 30 more dollars..but the way it sounded 500 open pressure was about the most he would have like to see on it. I don't think your getting into any Out of control valve train issues but I'm pretty sure that unstable can break a cam just as easy

As I said, we ran it with the solid steel valve on the dyno to 6800rpm with no stability issues.

Did some pretty aggressive porting to the intake tonight, port align was almost perfect but the carb opening/plenum need some major work, 3 hours later I had had it ready to bolt on. Got the rest of the engine back together aswell.

Glad to see it is back together again and you making progress with a good body this time. She has been a tough row for you, glad to hear its all working out. That new hood is killer... Looks great!!

With lightening up the valve train and adding the single plane, where are you setting your limiter? Let's hear her sing on that dyno again.

When it goes in the car il set it at 6500... but we pulled it to 6800 before, and i think well probably pull it to 7000 now. I expect to lose a bit of torque but I am hoping to pick up some top end HP, I would like to see 500hp and 475 ft lbs of tq. I like the hood aswell... just not sure if its going to be tall enough... make have to go to a 4" or god forbid a 6"

Re: My 1986 IROC build thread *PIC HEAVY*

I ordered up a 6 rib serpentine pulley for a moroso 4 vane vacuum pump. going to try and mount it in the stock smog pump location. I will also be changing the timing chain on the engine. I used a progear billet timing set which we have been using with great sucess for the past 8 years or so but this summer alone we have had 3 chain failures on 3 totally different applications. I dont want to be the 4th so I am changing it out for a cloyes 9-3600TX9.

Re: My 1986 IROC build thread *PIC HEAVY*

What's the reason for the vacuum pump? Will your cam not make enough vacuum to run the booster, HVAC, etc? Or is it put a small amount of vacuum on the crankcase to help ring seal, gaskets, etc?

Have been following your thread for a while now, but first time posting. Wish I was still living in Edmonton when I got my engine built 3 years ago (Sheldon Ward in Regina). Ended up getting hosed and had to almost repay what I had into it to get it built right recently. Got the engine checked out/redone by Precision Racing Engines in North Vancouver. Wish I would have known someone like you when I went to get it built initially. Live and learn.

Hoping to feed 8-10" of vacuum to the crankcase to help ringseal, its currently not a issue, nor do I expect it to be, but vacuum helps ringseal, ringseal makes HP. The cam is very mild duration/overlap wise (224/229 @ 0.050" and a 110LSA) but I still expect it to make over 500HP with vortec heads next go around on the dyno.

Not trying to hijack, but is the 8-10" of vacuum a good thing to do on ANY N/A engine? Or is this mainly just a V8 thing?

Any sort of crankcase vacuum is worth HP on pretty much any engine with piston rings. Not just a v8 thing.we have proven this on our dyno.

A lot of guys will say its bad for the pin bores etc, I'd say otherwise if your pin bore clearance was set correctly.

What pin bores? The wrist pin on the piston?

Yes, its a common thought that a vac pump will suck the pin bores dry.

As I mentioned yesterday, I picked up the supplies need to finish the bodywork on the car and get a shiny new coat of gloss black paint on it. This is 970$ worth of body shop supplies looks like. And people wonder why the average shop cant repaint your car for 1000$....

Also picked up a set of Nitto 555R 245/50-16 drag radials to go on the Iroc wheels. They are basically brand new(still have the paint lines on the tread faces)

Yes Sir, and if you went for top of the line Dupont you would be up another 30-40%, Nason is a great product used it thousands of times.

I Went single stage rather than base clear, strictly because of cost. Dupont Single stage is no longer available here but my buddy who is painting the car has sprayed lots of nason with great success. Cheap but still a quality product IMO. I did however spring for the high end Dupont Epoxy sealer ($430 with catalyst) Going to start prepping panels for paint, and hopefully have color on it within a month or so, That way I can get some glass back in it.

build looks great! The motor build looks very impressive, I wish I could afford all those shiny parts! It must be nice working at a machine shop so you know everything is done right and on your time. Good luck getting the bodywork done I know how iit always seems to take so long and you just want to drive it

Re: My 1986 IROC build thread *PIC HEAVY*

Got the vacuum pump mounted tonight, was actually very easy. Used a smog pump pulley from a TBI truck (it was a direct bolt on) and a stock moroso vac pump bracket(had to modify the big aluminum bracket though. Pulley lined up dead on, which amazed me even. Also found a power steering pulley at the swap meet last week, and changed the air cleaner lid out for a flat one to gain a bit more hood clearance as I really dont want to have to buy another cowl hood.

Peterson breather with a check valve to allow engine to breathe and still pull vacuum.

Was going to ask how mounting the vacuum pump worked out. Was also debating doing it on my engine, then I saw the price of the vacuum pump...

Re: My 1986 IROC build thread *PIC HEAVY*

Made a bracket to mount the coil on the engine tonight, dosnt look like much but still took 2 hours after tig welding it together. Also started stripping the car further for paint(door handles, mirrors, weather-stripping, window sweeps etc... Didnt get any pics of that though.

Picked up a aeromotive A1000 for dirt cheap, overkill but it will give me room to grow. Also picked up a new MSD 6AL-2 as I sold the 6AL i had.
