Felicity's 1984 Camaro Z28 HO
I've started a post several times but don't get it completed. I need a save for later button.
My wife's brother bought an 84 Z28 in 89. He drove it occasionally and had it parked in a shed on the farm. About 10 years ago he stopped parking it in garage and parked it outside under a tree. I would see it sitting there and kept telling him to sell it to me so it would quit rusting away. Last May I mentioned it again, and he told me I could have it for $500.
Wrote him a check and had my nephew pick it up and take it to his body shop. Plans included new paint and get it running for my daughter who is a junior in HS to drive.
It had two surface rust spots and we thought the rest was straight until we washed it and viewed the years of sitting out during summer hail storms.
Really we did not work them too hard, they decided to go down to the river the night before and stayed out a little too late.
Waiting for primer
I had a repair needed on one of the door panels (still waiting for it to get finished) I wanted to do it myself but the sewing on it worried me.
I purchased the Camaro material because I thought it came as a whole piece. Pretty disappointed when I opened it and noticed my error.
My nephew painted and clear coated it the next week. We could not work on it the next weekend with him, so he finished putting it together, cleaned it and his daughter drove it in the 4th of July parade. He said they drove it all over and the more they drove it the better it ran. So we decided to drive it the 100 miles home instead of trailer it home. I had ordered a lower radiator air deflector to replace the broken one. Went to install it and it was the wrong one. I did not really notice how hot out it was (almost 100 degrees) when we left for the drive home. Temp went to about 220 and pretty much stayed there. It was surging some up the hills, and the about 1 mile from home exit it started losing power and surging bad. Made it to exit and coasted into parking lot after it died. It started right back up and made it two more blocks and died and would not restart. Temp was still around 220. Opened hood and looked around. After awhile it started to boil out of overflow. Called a tow truck to get it the 2 miles to home. The truck dropped it in front of our house and after a while, a pool of antifreeze developed and I could see the radiator had let go. It did start the next day, but idle went real low after it went off of the choke. So now I am trying to get radiator and all the hoses replaced.

Here is how she sits.
We ended up painting the hood scoop instead of using the decals. Since he had the black in he decided to paint the ground effects black to see if we liked it. It looks good, but hopefully does not show the dirt too much.

nice paint job! what are your engine plans or are you just gonna make it a reliable car for now?

Re: Felicity's 1984 Camaro Z28 HO
Thank you. It is not a show car job, but with sitting outside and driven to school, it should work for now.
I am hoping to just get it running good. It only has 117K and was running good when he stopped driving it. I rebuilt the carb and had to replace the fuel pump. I have a lot to learn working on this type of engine. There is a pipe that goes to exhaust that is broken and a lot of hoses that need replaced. If I fail on getting all the smog/electronic to run good, that may need to be eliminated so I can work on it.
Since my daughter is to be driving it, it does not need to be fast. If engine does go, I will probably put a crate 350 in.

Re: Felicity's 1984 Camaro Z28 HO
I actually should say we rebuilt the carb. I tore it apart and cleaned it, then my daughter came out (when she woke up) and helped put it back together. She would read the breakdown and find the next part to put it back together. If she is not at work she is helping on the radiator replacement. It is not as quick of project as I hoped and I will be replying in the product forum on the Murray radiator when I finish it.

If you do swap in a 350 keep the orginal L69 engine that you have. The 350 will have more performance but, ha ha all of us thirdgen fanatics have a special attraction to the L69. That was the first signal of performance coming back to thirdgens. You can always swap it back in later (if you want) or just keep in in the garage.
Whats does the rest of the drivetrain in your Z28 consist of? Do you have the T-5 or 700r4? What about the gears, do you have 3.42's or 3.73's?
The T-5 cars got paired 3.73 gears with the L69.
The 700r4 cars got 3.42 gears standard and 3.73's if the G92 option was selected.
At least thats the way it was from the factory. Would have to inspect the rear end to be sure now. It's been a long time since any of our cars were at the factory so you just can't assume that it may be still 100% after all this time with out checking.
Hopefully you have posi-traction too. Although I have been surprised to find out that quite a few L69 cars didn't come with posi from the factory. I know it was cheaper to make the cars that way but still. A good running L69 is a strong running motor for what it is and wouldn't take to much to have 1 wheel peel outs especially with 3.73 gears. I know for the 1983 model year a lot of the L69 cars didn't get posi.

It is auto. I'm embarrassed to say I have not taken the time to check into the rest. It's pretty much loaded with options, so hopefully they did not skimp on the posi. If I end up pulling the engine, it will be kept in the corner (unless it grenades) to go with the car if sold.

Yeah I understand that. It would be easy to make it a posi rear if its not. Hold on the car if you can. I think you would regret if you sold it.

Re: Felicity's 1984 Camaro Z28 HO
Thanks again for the words of encouragement. I have too many things happening all at the same time, so I am not applying myself as good as I should.
I feel bad that she cannot drive it yet. But I have to change radiator so I might as well change thermostat. Need to repair wires to thermostat. Need to paint housing and bolts. Might as well replace heater hoses. Since they are out of way, might as well replace fuel and vacuum lines. Last night I noticed the EGR hose connectors are cracked in couple spots. Probably should replace the canister purge valve. I shake it and black grains fall out of it.

You did a great job fixing up the Camaro. Thank you for keeping the outside original looking.
If you need any help with the L69 system I'm very knowledgeable - just send me a PM.

sounds like there AIR tubes, go to the AIR pump which suprisingly i have heard you can pass smog tests without i took the belt off mine long ago and never noticed a difference in mileage or how it ran or sounded, wondered about spending th 8 bucks for another belt to make it run again but idk why i would lol

Re: Felicity's 1984 Camaro Z28 HO
We were able to work on it this weekend and we got it running.
If anybody knows where this wire goes, let me know.
I had a superfund site going in front of my house. I left the fuel line off for about an hour and when I came back, fuel had been leaking down the engine. Moped up as much as I could, but left some stains in the street. Cleaned off some of the built up oil.
We cleaned and shampooed the seats. Got most of the stains out. I pick up the door panels tomorrow.
Painted the outside strip on the T-tops.
I tried to get the power mirrors to work, but was not successful. I am going to try a new switch. If that does not work, I will need to start researching some troubleshooting. She finally got to drive and is pretty happy.

I did not need to, but I bought 3 yds of the "Camaro" lettering material, $300 with the shipping. The upholsterer charged me $125 for the side material (I have some left over) and $75 labor to replace both material on both doors.

Gorgeous car! I love that interior but you probably figured that out from my thread devoted to it! Shes a lucky girl. I wish i had a camaro that clean in highschool. It was close but no where near that nice.

Re: Felicity's 1984 Camaro Z28 HO
I replaced fluid in transmission and rear end as they were both leaking. Transmission shifts and kicks down a lot better. On the test drive, it acted like it was out of fuel and died going up a hill. Got it started and drove it back home. Starts and drives okay, but having issues I think are with fuel trying to get it up to highway speeds.
The fuel gauge is always on full. I wish I had a hoist to pull the tank and check power at the float. It does not look like fun. We did fill up the tank just to be sure. Not sure how much the tank holds, but it only took a little over 5 gallons.
I still have to replace plugs, wires, coil, module, cap and rotor. I think I am going to go through the carb again, as I am not sure I had the correct rebuild kit. I also ordered a canister purge valve as it seems to have small black grains rattling around and falling out. Exhaust will be replaced next week, including the pipe from.
Thanks for positive feed back from everybody. Helps keep us old guys from getting burnt out and feel like we are gaining on it.

Re: Felicity's 1984 Camaro Z28 HO
sounds honestly like your problem could be the plug wires, i know it sounds weird when it seems like its not getting fuel, but a couple months ago my car was the same way, felt like a dog had no power i had to almost redline it to get up the hill to my house, and i changed the wires, the #1 wire was arching bad and the #5 wire wasn't on all the way well right after i got new ones on it fired up right away (unusual for my car) and idled good, power was all back and the mileage got alot better, iirc the tanks in the 84 z28 are about 15.5 gallons, $48.30 will fill mine with gas being 3.45 at the time i actually did fill it

Tank holds about 15 gallons or so. Did you ever drain the gas? If you only put 5 gallons in then you are running on 10 gallons of skunky old nasty varnish unless im missing something. If thats the case the car will run like crap until you get that stuff out of there. Also check timing and spark plugs/wires.

I like her car, i might have put red carpet in it maybe? I was 12 when my mom bought a new red one in 84, i thought the stereo rocked! It did back then "dynamic"
The emissions canister has a charcoal granules in it to help filter the fuel tank fumes, thats whats falling out..

Yeah you may want to go through and do all the regular routine maintenance / tune-up work.
Having the car in really good tune helps out overall performance. Better to be safe than sorry espcially since the car has been sitting for a while and there are a lot of spots in the cars service history.

Re: Felicity's 1984 Camaro Z28 HO
Been awhile since updated. Replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil and module. It did not make any difference.
I changed transmission fluid and filter. Replaced the rear end lube and gasket. We had to replace the exhaust which hit the wallet hard.
We tore the carb apart again. It was dirty (replaced fuel filter again) and a film all through the carb. Also, the spring on the needle that connects to the float had slipped into the opening on the float. This may have bound the float keeping it from fully opening. After putting it all back together and test driving, it ran great. It's also starting way better.
I have a leak in trans still and an antifreeze leak I need to track down. I've been a little lazy at night - getting dark too early, and weekends have been busy.
Thanks for all the feed back.

Re: Felicity's 1984 Camaro Z28 HO
Cool looking car and it's cool that she gets a sweet first car. When I was 16 my Grandpa gave me his 1978 Chevy 4x4 pickup That he got right before I was born. By the time I got it it was bad off so he gave me a Check for $1,000 and took the truck back. So I wanted an Iroc and even found a clean, blue, L98 T-top car. My mom said NO WAY and I ended up getting an 89 Camry for over $1k then the Iroc was going for. Looking back I was bad in the Camry so the Iroc might have been a bad idea LOL!
Glad you guys get to spend time together and work on the car-that is time spent that is well worth it and is always remembered. Cars come and go, but love from a perent is forever.

Not to make you feel bad, but eBay seller ROHNAZ sells the interior fabric for about $125 for the same size piece that you have. I have the grey/black and also the brown/tan. I will be getting the blue when I see it next.

Looks really good! That has to be one of the cleanest early z's on this board. As for the wheels, chances are the clear coat is pealing and there really is no way of getting them to look 100% without refinishing them. They do look great now though!
