1990 irocz, my first z/slow build thread

hey guys, first time poster/recent lurker.
ive been a huge fan of irocs since my dad brought one home and autocrossed with it in 1998. since then he has had 5 or 6 over the years, always selling them to buy something new.

i decided for my "new years resolution" that this year was going to be the year i got my own Z. i was going to go look at an 86 RS that popped up in craigslist ive been eyeing for a few months, but my dad, in a moment of drunken brilliance, remembered his buddy had a 1990 for sale.

dad managed to reach the guy an hour before somebody was coming up from mass to buy it, and had him hold it for us. needless to say, the keys and title are in my hand

theres definitely some things wrong with it that need to be fixed/replaced, and im no car guy, so this is all new for me, but ill know the inside and outside of this car by the time im finished.

the car

305 5 speed
the vin says its a van nuys car, but the last 5 digits arent the van nuys plant, its the norwood plant line number, any idea on that?

stuff that needs to be done(will be updated as i find more)
replace the bad fuel injector- going to replace the one bad one for right now, but eventually all 8. any websites with cheap, but good quality injectors would be appreciated.
interior needs to be redone
new headliner
driver seat needs to be reupholstered, possibly passenger seat, the backseats mint.
center console may need to be replaced
the center glove box latch is broken on both sides of the bar... kinda just flops there
both driver and passenger seatbelt guides need to be replaced
passenger seat doesnt lock into place. im not sure if this is supposed to be like this, or if its broken, makes it a pita to back up.
new paint job
replace hood props (bought these, needs to be installed)
hatch props need replacing(2x4 for now, was told that these are a bit expensive, if anybody has a website to buy them off of cheap, id appreciate it, but for now, not high on the list)

what i would like to do to the car

everything in the list above(duh)
paint- i want to keep it to one of the 6 factory colors, i am really fond of the black irocs, but i need some help with the decals for it. the stripes on her now arent the ones the factory would ship with if she was black. so if anybody could help me out with that, i would really appreciate it.

ill be uploading more pictures, between the snow up here in maine, and my work schedule, i havent had time to see her during daylight to take some better pics.
like i was saying, if anybody could point me in the direction of some good parts websites, i would much appreciate it.

thanks!

Re: 1990 irocz, my first z/slow build thread

i was wondering if anybody could explain the speedometer for me. only the 1990 verts came with the 115 speedo, yet mine has it, and its clearly no vert.

one of the pictures is of the rpo codes, i was wondering if anybody could help me with decoding them, so i could know what she was shipped with off the plant.

search around for an rpo decoder, I haven't had to use one in years and can't remember which one was the best. here's one I found quickly but there might be better ones out there. http://www.cadillacfaq.com/rpo/index.php

wrong there, drop tops were Not the only ones to come with low speedometers, I had a 1987 Iroc-Z with the 5.0 LG4 Carbureted Engine and it had the lowest of the low 85 MPH speedo, other Z28 and Iroc-Z with better engines like the 5.0 TPI got either the 115mph speedo or if it was the top optioned Iroc-Z then it got the 145 MPH speedometer.

If you have the Vin Number I can check it for you. the Van Nuys Built cars had the Letter L and the Norwood built cars had the letter N, and the Norwood plant closed down in 1987 and the remainder of Firebirds and Camaros got made here at the plant in Van Nuys before it shut down at the end of 1992 when they moved production of the F-body to Quebec Canada.

http://www.chevy-camaro.com/chevy-ca...-third-gen.asp

1987-92 CAMARO VIN Decoder below

Fourth & Fifth Digit Body Style: FP=Camaro Sport Coupe, FS=Firebird, FW=Trans Am
Six Digit: 2=Hatchback, 3=Convertible
Seventh Restraint Codes: 1=Manual Belts, 2 or 3=Manual w/ Driver Air Bag, 4=Auto Belts

______

Nevermind I just saw your pictures, I just checked your Vin: 1G1FP23F4LL107792 and It checks out, It's a 1990 Camaro Iroc-Z, it has 13 history records which most likely are just maintenance records. but just by looking at the Vin I knew Immediately that You don't have the Top Iroc which Explains the 110 MPH speedometer. I don't think your too familiar with the F-body like I am since I practically Grew up worshipping these cars and know most of this like the back of my hand, but let me break it down for you.

CARFAX
YOUR SEARCH RESULTS
Vehicle:1990 CHEVROLET CAMARO IROC-Z
VIN:1G1FP23F4LL107792
Your vehicle has
13 history records.

1 = 1st Digit asks Nation of Origin = U.S.
G = 2nd Digit asks Division = General Motors
1 = Chevrolet
F - 4th and
P - Fifth Digit mean Bodystyle, FP = Camaro Sport Coupe
2 = 6th Digit determines body style, #2 means Hatchback
3 = 7th Digit determines Restraint Code, #3 means Manual Belts with Driver Airbag
F = 8th Digit is The Engine Code & Determines what Engine the Car Originally Came with, Yours has an F and F = 305 TPI, the Number #8 would Mean 350 TPI, The Last Years of Iroc-Z '87-'88-'89 that came with the 305 TPI engine and the Automatic Transmisson got the 115 MPH Speedometer, the 5.7 TPI got the 145 MPH and also the ones with the 305 TPI equipped with the 5 speed Manual, also The Gauges changed for 1990, there was 85MPH, 115MPH and 145MPH from '86-'89 but in '90 they changed the style from Full Moon to Half Moon so from '90 to '92 there were only 110MPH and 145MPH Speedometers, and depending on what options your Camaro had determined what Speedometer you would get, Your options got you the 110MPH speedometer.
4 = 9th Digit is the Check digit, it doesn't mean anything that's just like a security Identifying Number the factory came up with in case somebody tried to make up a fake Vin Number.
L = 10th Digit Means the Year, L = 1990
L = 11th Digit means the Production Plant in which it was Built, L = Van Nuys, CA
107792 <-- Identifying Serial Number

I Hope this Helps

Re: 1990 irocz, my first z/slow build thread

also The picture where the Tag shows your vin and RPO codes list I can see the LB9 option code which was the Code for the 305 TPI, I don't remember the rest right off the top of my head because I'm sleepy but another one I recall is C60 which means you have Air Conditioning, C49 is Rear Window defroster.

Re: 1990 irocz, my first z/slow build thread

cool, thanks so far guys.

my bad about the speedometer, i couldnt find anything about the 110 speedo, and i could have sworn that it went up to 115, hell, even my dad was convinced about it. and hes had these forever.

like i said, im no car guy whatsoever, so this is my first foray into the car world

but thank you for your help so far!
ill be going to see her later on today to get some more pics and update my list of stuff

edit:

http://www.iroczone.com/2009/10/iroc...-guide/#speedo

thats is what threw us off. for the 1990 vert, they show the 110 speedo as the 115 speedo.

Re: 1990 irocz, my first z/slow build thread

Your Welcome

and Yes it can get confusing if you don't know the whole story, You see since they changed the style of the Gauges for the 1990 - '91 & '92 models they also changed the speedometers, they changed the previous 115 mph to 110 mph, the 145 MPH speedometer remained and they got rid of the 85 MPH speedometer, and depending on which options the car came with determined what Speedo You would get.

Seems like it needs alot of work, but it's a cool car and if you got it for the right price then it's worth it.

Re: 1990 irocz, my first z/slow build thread

Yeah. Thanks guys.
She's the new love of my life. This thing is helping me get over my ex, and gives me something to be happy about. Plus it's a way to spend time with my dad, which I could never do when I was younger.

I'm sure most of you don't care about the story though, but it's my thread :P

As for the interior pics, not sure when they will be up. My landlord shut off the internet, and I'm in the process of moving again

Very cool car! Hardtop sticks are getting tough to find.

Your car is absolutely a Van Nuys car, since Norwood was closed by the time your car was built.

You have the base LB9/T5 setup which means you have the TPI with the L98 cam, single cat exhaust, M39 version of the T5 and 3.08 posi with rear drums. (GU4 = 3.08).

That's why you have a 115 mph speedo. The G92 option would have triggered a 145 mph speedo, dual cats, MK6 T5 and a 3.42/3.45 and rear discs, ( as well as oil cooler).

Really cool car, bro! Congrats!

what is that peeling off on the very bottom of the window?

and what options do i have for heater/ac controls? i dislike the slider bar very much. my daily driver currently is a 2000 Taurus, and i have the round ***** i guess you would call them.

Fog lights used to live there. Your hood insulation looks beat. You can buy a cheap non-correct one from ebay or Hawks has a group buy on a slightly better one. The OEM one is no longer available.

Re: 1990 irocz, my first z/slow build thread

do the fog lights have their own switch in the car? ive got a red switch near my light switch on the dash that i cannot figure out what it goes dor.

a quick google search brings up nothing specific about the hood insulation. some say its good for noise reduction etc. is it needed?

Somethings def up with that decal kit. may have been previously painted. other then that all your pictures are showing stuff thats not to hard to replace or come by. which is good.

there should be a factory fog light switch. I cant remember where though because ive had mostly firebirds and only one camaro that had fog lights

EDIT: should look something like the attached picture

Cool, thanks. That explains that switch. Now to get the other one figured out
I forgot to get a pic of the other switch when I was at my parents today, but I may go drive her around tomorrow and get that pic.

Re: 1990 irocz, my first z/slow build thread

while tinkering around today, i played around with the other mysterious switch. turns out it runs some sort of fan in the engine bay. i didnt pop the hood to see where it was running it though. at some point in the future, i may wire it up to turn on when the car starts so i dont have to worry about turning it off and on.

once i get my taxes back, im replacing the fuel injectors and bringing it in for inspection!!

in other news, im getting better at driving a stick! ^.^
