Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

oh the north does terrible things to cars..

Man idk, less then 200 made? Yeah everyone says 4th gens arnt worth anything blah blah.. we shall see in the next few years..

My dad just put a entire floor pan/frame rails in a 68 camaro sitting out in a field for years..

Whos to say someone wouldn't want to restore that car.. if it gets parted and crushed then theres no chance.. Hard to decide, Doesnt look bad from the pics but from the looks of the brake booster i can only imagine the underside.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

I did not think the underside was too bad when I first looked at it but most of it is gone. From what I can tell it needs: drivers side rocker and quarter, passenger side repair (quarter), new drivers side door and LF quarter, hood, all floor pans, the drivers side strut tower, that what I can tell from not even having the car on a lift or apart. Basically it will cost 3-5k to repair all of the panels plus paint. It will cost probably 20-30k to get this car like new then only have it worth 5-10k. Basically what I can see this car becoming is either a drag car for X275 or a American Iron Extreme car. The engine and the trans I was told are not the orginal ones either so this car is in a world of hurt. I will not crush the car. I will try to get a hold of a prospective buyer to come and get it. I was thinking about maybe calling Sam Strano because he is just over an hour away from me to see if he would be interested.

Also there were also 158 1LE's produced in 1994. I am on a mission to try to get a history on the car.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

The engine and transmission are out of the donor car. It was a major pain in the ***. I am glad that I will never buy another 4th gen, I could never imagine actually building one and wanting to work on it. Something funny that did show out while everything was being removed, the previous Mech. that changed the clutch had wrote: "**** Chevy....Junk Camaro" and then signed his name on the pressure plate. Any ways I believe we are going to just do a quick rebuild of the engine, and look at the trans. I will be ordering a Hurst Billet Plus shifter along with Headman LT's. I will also look into swapping the 4th gen cluster in.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

working on a fourth gen isn't too bad, as long as you have the right tools. as for parting out the car head over to LTXtech.com pretty sure someone wants parts

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

I posted the 1LE on CL I have three people already coming to look at it in the next week. The tools are not a problem, the only tool that could have made it easier would have been either a twin post lift or no rain yesterday when we pulled it, so that we could use the backhoe to lift it been able to cut off the rotten front clip. My biggest personal problem is the fact that it is very difficult to work on them due to the lack of room under the hood and in the trans tunnel. Rant over... haha

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

We put the car up on the bumper jack (placed jack stands under the car), put the cherry picker (engine hoist) with a QuaterMax lift bar on the engine to steady it, we then unbolted the transmission and removed it. The top two bolts were a PITA. after the transmission was out we lowered the car onto small jack stands and then used the picker to pick up the engine, we had to remove the plastic cowl piece and slightly bend the cowl to get enough clearance for the EGR. We should have just taken it of, but couldn't find the M14 wrench quick enough. Please keep in mind the serpintine bet and all acc. were removed. But it was terrible trying to unbolt the headers I couldn't imagine if the car had the A/C stuff...

The engine is pretty sludged up a rebuild will be done because of it. I have a set of 4.020 SRP pistons for it with only dyno time, I will be putting fresh rods in it nothing special probably a Scat I-beam or the Compstar version. I also have NOS GM hyd. lifters, I may do a cam change I am not sure yet. The head will probably just get some clean up port work but nothing special, they typically will not take much work before they try to crack.
I should have it mostly torn down tomorrow. The harness will also probably be out too.

Yeah you could have just unbolted the k member and used the engine hoist to lift the car off the member and rolled the engine and trans right out from under it

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

The biggest reason why we did not drop the kemp bee was hold the front clip on and we also would not have been able to roll it out easily. It took two of us roughly 5 hrs to remove them. IIRC 3 hrs less then what the book calls for doing a set of plugs.

The cam I that I was thinking about using the GM 847 as many know it. 112 separation, 234 and 242 duration, the is like 53x and 558 I think it pushing the limits but it sure will sound nice.

The engine is completely torn down. Everything looks good. Crosshatch was still there however enough was missing to loose power sooo... It's time for a bigger hole. No bearings were hurt in all 170k of hard driven miles. It needs a timing set and few other small thing but nothing major.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

Just got a Global West Traclink NIB for under $200. Its even for the right year. I will have to modify it to fit with the t56 but for the price I could not pass it up. It is a TSC-20 it anyone was wondering. It looks to be very well built piece. I got the underhood harness and fuse/relay block pulled from the other camaro this weekend. I got the leather seats installed too.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

I have gotten the rods for the engine, the came in the mail today. I purchased the 6.125" bushed Scat Pro Comp I-beam rod SCA-26125716. I am using a 1.125 CH flat top SRP forged 4.020 piston. For rings I will be running a set of Total Seal Classic Race rings. I am still not totally sure what we will be doing on a camshaft. Spoke with Tim from Bullet on what he suggests; he said that for the power band that I am wanting to stay in for road racing and autocross I will need around a 228 to 232 duration and around 0.525 lift on a 112 LSA.

Actually none that I can see. It has the same texture and feel as the panels did, and looks more original than dye.

I have decided that I will be running a carburetor because of the RPM restrictions of the LT1 PCM.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

Picked up an extra set of LT1 heads for porting. Got the hood on the car and marked to trim. I have a line on a non a/c heater box that is local I may end up picking up soon. I have sold both of my 94's. Our CNC arrived about two weeks ago. I am also now looking at buying a teal '92 RS that has been sitting in a garage for a long time. It is supposed to be rust free but I will see.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

The biggest thing was, we were working in limited space, and it was about 40 degrees outside and raining, so we did what we had to do. I am just not a huge fan of 4th gens. That's all, it would not take long I understand it would have taken way less time and effort if we had more space or if we had a rack when we dropped the engine.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

I owe an update. The heads have been blasted are ready for porting. We are matching the runners for the Fel-Pro 1205 gasket. I also got a set of 05/06 GTO calipers that I am going to be doing the brake swap. They are essentially the same as the C5's but with different brackets. Once the brackets are changed or modified they will work with the C5 rotors.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

This weekend: the block has been baked and blasted and it was also zero decked to 8.990". I gathered together a set of ARP studs for the main caps, and decided to get one of our cam cores reground to suit my needs. I will be more than likely using a set of Crower solid roller lifters on the custom grind that Bullet will do for us. There are some other small things that I have done too.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

I am pulling a complete black interior minus seats tomorrow. I hope it does not rain on me, they are calling for scattered storms. I will update with pics tomorrow.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

I am pretty stoked that I found the build sheet finally, it confirms that the shipping weight on this car was 2,913 lbs.

I have been working on getting the black interior that I got for the car in it. I need to dye the compartment door and the rear panel since the car that I pulled the interior from had the power hatch pull down, and the door will not fit with that piece.

I will be working from the back to the front. I may wire in the convenience light that was in the other rear panel into the one I am going to use. I need to change the locks on both the doors to storage compartments in the rear. I am also removing all of the original sound deadening material.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

Time for a small update. I have changed the door panels over to the black ones and I also replaced the outer weather stripping which was a major pain. I picked up an A/C delete heater box at a friends private junkyard that some of you might consider a honey hole. There was almost a dozen Camaro's and Firebird's in it for the most part untouched (not all are in the pics).

I also pulled out the front gray carpet, and removed the headliner and got it stripped to be recovered.

I pick up a set of 05-06 GTO calipers off of a friend of mine that I am going to be making all of the parts necessary to adapt them.

I am also going to include a pic of the very dirty T56 that I pulled from the '94 1LE

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

Well I have finally got the interior back in the car, and I realized I forgot to mount the bracket for the TQ arm on the floor so I need to take the back seat out and pull up some of the carpet in the near future. I still need to install the Grant GT steering wheel that I have.

What is this connector for?

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

I picked up some more goodies. I have also machined the one rotor into a hub for the big brake setup so far.

I got a NOS Cheater system with a Team G intake that is plumbed for nitrous. I will be getting a controller shortly. I want a progressive but, I do not know which one I want for sure. I may just use a window switch.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

I had to pass on that car. It needed at least floor pans and some other mechanical issues fixed along with completely stripped down to bare metal and resprayed.

Anyways work is slow on the engine side for the camaro. I am currently heavily involved with Pitt's FSAE team, and we got the car completely modeled in solid works and will start production in the next month. I am in charge of the engine, so there is that. That has taken up a majority of my time. I can go into further detail about anything, but prefer not to type it all out right now.

I also officiated one of the Ultimate Street Car Association events at Pittsburgh International Raceway, it was a very cool experience I had a chance to talk to a few individuals from Ridetech, UMI, and Detroit Speed. I appreciate the opportunity that I got in doing that.

Here is a video from Detroit Speed:

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

It has been forever and I feel that I should give a small update.

The car is not being abanoned I am slowly working through stuff. Next on my list is to port the head which I have not had time to do since I have been working on this thing below.
Exploded view (its worth clicking to open) shows a majority of all the parts we made:

Chassis on the Jig with 3d printed super node in the rear which was then cast and submitted for a world wide casting design competition:

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

Also need to get a new blower motor for the heater box, motor mounts, lower seat beats 4th gen, black clothe for the head liner, J51 rotors for the front, ARP front wheel studs, trans cross member, Pro 5.0 shifter (or take the one from my T56 mustang), shorty headers, since I won't have any ground clearance when I make the switch to coil overs, and some other odds and ends.

I did acquire an Aeromotive A1000 fuel system and carb bypass reg. The bypass reg is currently on my 408w '94 GT for the time being since the Camaro is not done yet.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

Well the engine has been finished and dyno'd, and in the car. It made 470hp and 420 ft*lbs of torque which is pretty good for having mild bowl work done to the heads and the the gm 847 cam with solid rollers on it. It kept pulling up to 7k. There are a lot of minor things I need to finish up over the next month, my goal is to have the car done for October. The torqure arm mount had to be modified (shortend about 4") to work with the t56. It is fine by me, I tied it into the trans cross member from Hawks. I want to put this out there there crossmember requires the 2nd and 3rd set of holes to be used. I had to drill holes and use weldnuts since the early thirdgens did not come with that set of holes.

I had to dimple the headers at the A-arm mount on the passenger side and the k-member on the drivers side. When the trans was put in I need to notch the floor for the pro 5.0 shifter

The $50 fabricated valve covers from amazon are really nice for the money. The rail isn't perfect nor a true billet rail its only .25", anyways they used .090" thick aluminum plate (I sonic tested it for the hell of it).

A six pot front brake setup is in the work to fit under the ZR1's I am quite excited about this. Hopefully I will have it done before spring. I am scrapping the GTO brake setup I dont like how the caliper bracket is design plus I think it will be badass to have 6 pot porsche calipers up front.

Scanned the Spindle in with a Faro arm.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

Car is all done and inspected I took it to a local autocross this past weekend. Please enjoy the pics. Any questions or comments please feel free. I plan on putting on c6 vette brakes (JL9). I will also confirm that 2004 Touraeg calipers are 6 piston brembos and will fit a C6 (J55) / C7 rotors.
When I first got the car 4 years ago.

This is how the car currently looks and is being raced this way.

Offset on these wheels were not good and are for sale these should fit good without spacers.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

The CAM class is pretty cool. I get slightly upset when there are guys running other classes that should be running CAM but who is to tell them what to do. I am pretty pumped to put on a set of ZO6 wheels, I just need to roll my fender lips since they are 17x9.5 and 18x11 with a set of beffy toyo proxes. My poor 10 bolt isn't going to last long. As it is it just developed a leak at the outer axle seal and has some play that I can not tighten up.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

I just graudauted from college and just moved to MI to work for an auto manufacturer as a Calibration Engineer for automatic transmissions.

I have a Super Victor I am working on porting it. I am currently in the market for a 9in rear and another set of wheels and another butler built seat to match my custom made one. I am going try to have the car up here so I can go race at Milan when it gets warm out, I am not sure where there is any autocross around in the Jackson, MI area but if anyone knows let me know. I am keeping my eyes out for parts for the car such as a 3" or so cowl hood, and I also plan on running a FiTech setup if I stay NA, I also have an older gray box Fast System that I was given I am just not sure if I am going to use it. Or I may go with twin turbo's and do a blow through carb. It is all still up in the air. I may also go back to a Gen 1 sbc, since I acquired a set of Dart Pro 1 heads for next to nothing that just need repaired.

Overall here is what is on my check list:

1. Ford 9" (have a Torino Rear small bearing need to decide if its worth modifiying one or buying a new one made as a direct fit)
2. Pull engine and inpect and swap on a road race oil pan
3. New wheels with sticky tires
4. Inspect trans (I am having an issue with the reverse engagement)
5. Install Roll Bar

I'm in Michigan let's be friends. Woodwards big so we hope to see you out there. As for fitech the guy I work with is on here as well and has one he took off his car. There was a strange 12 bolt for 4th gen on motor city muscle awhile back if I recall. As for autocross. I have a 4th gen friend big into it. There's also a 12 bolt setup on mifbody.com if memory serves as well. Will do more digging if I get to the computer today. Glad to see progress being made. What company do you work for? Pm if your rather not say or if you can't no biggy.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap

Here are some things that I have been pondering since I am about 300 miles from my car right now and will be for a few more months until I can get it to MI.

I'm picking up a set of 17" saw blades for the car for the hell of it. At least till I repair the C5 Z06 wheels I have for the car, that I bought sight unseen and the holes are drilled out to approximately 11/16". I ordered press in repair inserts for the wheels. I'll probably fix them at a later time, but I have stacks of tires that will fit the saw blades.

I am also currently working on pricing out doing a floater 9" with circle track parts and probably grabbing an old nascar third member off ebay. After thinking about the rear end it lead me to investigating new springs and dampers I was thinking the QA1 DA's for front and rear or doing Koni Yellow's or possibly some other combo. I can say for sure that I am going to definitely do coil overs in the rear and some sort of weight jacks in the front. I am also going to be doing a custom strut tower brace.

As of now that is where I am at.

If anyone in the Lansing/Detriot area is selling a cowl hood (4in or less), vette wheels, or good shocks send me a PM.

I am just using the standard cheap Headman Header LT's. you can run any gen1 sbc headers with the car.

if you have any more questions feel free to ask.
