86 Z28 Project

Hi everyone. What a great board here! My 14 year old son and I are working on a 1986 Z28 here in Northeastern Utah. The info on this site should keep us busy for some time.

I started reading stickies last night, mainly this one: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/engi...n-1st-car.html, great stuff.

Our project will be slow but sure:
  1. My son needs to find a job to fund the build. He payed $800 of his own money for the car which has nearly exhausted his funds. I will help, but I expect him to contribute as much money as he can.
  2. I have to work out the details on garage construction. My wife will give up her garage temporarily, but not until we have a start date on the new garage. She's afraid she might be out in the cold this winter.
  3. It's our first project.
  4. The car needs a TON of work.

The owner listed it as a 350 but my son knew better. He did his homework and knew there were no regular production 350s in 1986. We didn't argue with the guy. Whether he has no clue or just thinks no one else does, we'll never know.

Yesterday we changed the plugs just to see if we coul get it around the block. It runs very rough, only has 1st and 2nd gear and little to no brakes, but it was a successful drive.

Time to get to work.

Re: 86 Z28 Project

Sounds like a good father/son project. Maybe the engine isn't the original? Love to see some pics.

We'll see which engine it is when we pull it and I will let you know.
