My 1987 IROC

Re: My 1987 IROC
I didn't take any pictures, but got the front fenders and hood all aligned over the weekend with the help of a good friend. Next will be to get the wheel well skirts on (once I find the push clips) and the passenger ground effects. I still have to fix the drivers hinge before I put them on that side.

Re: My 1987 IROC
Small update: Got the driver and passenger door ground effects painted and the passenger rocker ground effect painted the other day. I still have some work to do to the driver side ground effect plus get the driver door hinge fixed before that side goes on. I'll get some pictures tomorrow after I get that done. It's almost a whole car again!

Got the passenger door and rock ground effects painted and on over the weekend. Looks like I need another coat on them, but I can do that on the car. Also included a picture of the aligned front fenders and hood that got done a couple of weeks ago.

Re: My 1987 IROC
Ok, so, I'm going to very soon try to work on the driver door hinge repair. I have done a lot of reading and looking at various threads on here of different ways it has been done. If anyone has any advice though feel free to give it. Any help would be great. I don't want to remove the hinges so I will be trying to cut the top ones off with a dremel/grinder and removing the lower pin. I also need to replace the roller and pin. I saw different methods of tackling that job in different threads. I figured I would see how that went before doing a certain method. Main thing is get it apart without removing the hinges. I think I'll be going the ladder method to hold the door with straps I have. I'm trying to allow for a whole weekend, but that is proving difficult for the next month so I may try to tackle this in one long day. I have the TDS roller and pin and Dorman hinge repair kit as the replacement parts.

Re: My 1987 IROC
Not much of an update, but for the last month I have been too busy with other obligations to work on the IROC. I will be starting and hopefully finishing the door hinge project this weekend. I have about a month of insurance left on the car till next spring. At this point once I get the hinge fixed and the left ground effects and door panel on I'm going to try to enjoy it and drive it around before insurance is up. Then I have a few small projects to do to it during the winter since it will be home and not in storage. I also want to find a used 245/45-18 tire and some adapters so I can use the 18" wheels I've had sitting around to see how I like them. I used them on my Riviera and one tire went bad so I put the stocks back on that. I still have to get the proper wheel adapters to make them work. The wheel adapters I found are 1.25" thick so I hope that is enough clearance to make these work. The wheels have a 0 offset I think.

Re: My 1987 IROC
Small update. Got the door driver hinge done finally. I ended up having to replace the roller pin along with the roller. The roller pin needing to be changed took a lot longer to do than the hinges themselves. Some day I will have to do this to the passenger side, but for now it's OK. Now I can now get the left ground effects and door panel on and finally enjoy it for the few weeks it has left of insurance. Then it's more work through the winter. I also bought a 2" cowl hood for my 80 that I will be putting on tonight.

Re: My 1987 IROC
I was comparing my VIN and trim tag information between both my 80 and 87 Camaro and just realized both were built the 5th week of March at the Van Nuys, CA plant exactly 7 years apart. They both also use the same paint code for their black.

Re: My 1987 IROC
Got some pictures after I installed the left door panel, weather stripping, rocker ground effect and door ground effect. Very nice and quite inside with new weather stripping. First time this car has been back together in over 10 years.

Re: My 1987 IROC
Not much of an update, but I've been looking at gas tanks and may have found a deal on one. The filler neck at the gas cap is mangled on mine so I don't think the cap properly seals. I've had gas leak out around the gas door flap on the car. I also have to take the tank out anyway since I think my gauge is not working due to a wire disconnected on the sending unit inside of the tank. I have removed the EGR and 9th injector so I will need to get a prom burned for that closer to spring.

A nice, modern convenience for your IROC.
Looks like that convoluted tubing sort of fits like my pants after the Holidays...stretched a little tight in spots.

Re: My 1987 IROC
Got the rest of the smog stuff off over the weekend. So I will be posting the good stuff from that in the parts section soon. I have everything for the smog equipment except for the rear tube that goes from the left to the right side and the right side exhaust manifold air tube. Both of those got damaged during removal, but everything else is good. I'm in the process of removing the EGR stuff so I will have that stuff for sale as well. Along with the 9th injector stuff. Cleaning up the engine bay. Once I get the EGR stuff off I will be cleaning and repairing my TPI intake runners of a few dents I put there. Once I get more progress I will post pictures.

Re: My 1987 IROC
I wasn't able to find a vendor feedback thread, but I wanted to give a shout out to Hawks Motorsports and Stacy for excellent customer service. I was trying to get shipping information and a tracking number for my order and Stacy was very helpful. I ordered the front ground effect brackets for my front ground effect and they should be here today. Only took two days to get here.

Re: My 1987 IROC
Here's a picture of the front spoiler brackets I picked up from Hawks Motorsports. Look to be pretty good quality. They didn't come with washers or nuts so I had to grab some from the hardware store. I still haven't had a chance to install them yet.

Re: My 1987 IROC
I'm getting close to having the engine back together. So I am going to be in need of a custom prom. I still need to do a bunch of reading on here about them. I have deleted my EGR, 9th injector and AIR (smog equipment). Also might be looking to get a prom with a bit of a performance tune for a stock 305 TPI.

Re: My 1987 IROC
Got the intake runners repaired and the engine all back together on Saturday. Also replaced the rear plastic distributor cover piece with an aluminum one and replaced the plate on top of the throttle body with one I bought off of Ebay waiting to put on the car when it was time. I still need to wash the whole engine bay when it gets warmer. Next job is replaced the busted off cross member bolt and figure out what is causing the gas gauge not to work. Here are some picture of the engine now that it's back together.

Re: My 1987 IROC
Got the broken cross member bolt out and replaced this weekend. Then I spent the rest of the time sanding on my motorcycles gas tank that I was waiting for warmer weather to work on. Next on the IROC will be figuring out if I have a bad fuel gauge or sending unit and getting that replaced. That should be this coming weekends project.

Re: My 1987 IROC
Did some testing on my gauge and sending unit. My gauge tests good, so it looks like the sending unit is the problem. Even though it shows a 35.3 OHM test. I originally thought broken wire, but maybe the float is stuck or the contacts on it are corroded. I'll find out Saturday when I get it out of there.

Re: My 1987 IROC
I got the gas tank out and the sending unit out and it tested. Everything was fine and working. So when the sending unit was put in last for the new fuel pump something must have been holding the float down. Got it all back together and made sure I could hear the float flop around inside the tank. Put the tank back in the car and put gas in it and now it reads normal. Only thing I had to replace was the strainer since the other one had some gunk on it.

Re: My 1987 IROC
Worked on getting the double din DVD receiver in the console this weekend. Think I have it in the console far enough. I wasn't going to get it in there any better without cutting up the car and trying to avoid that. Still need to make or have made a console bezel piece for the double din and flipping of the climate controls. Should be able to modify mine. I have found threads on here from other members that had modified their bezel and they turned out good. I'm going to order that SEM paint that has texture to it. Also fixed the top mounts for the climate control. I had to modify the bracket and cut the holes longer so I could adjust it to where it needed to be to fit the stereo. Next job before I work on that is get the dual gate shifter installed. Been wanting to install that for a few years now, but keep working on other stuff and putting that on the back burner. Here's a few pics of how it looks mounted in the console.

Re: My 1987 IROC
Started on the shifter swap out. Got the old one out and started mocking up the dual gate. I need to get the shifter bracket, mount and cable changed out before I go too much further, but got the bracket and the neutral safety switch mounted.

Re: My 1987 IROC
Now that the IROC has insurance again I took it out yesterday for a drive. Gas gauge is working just as it should and no leaks from the tank at all. I think I have a bad right ball joint now though. The right wheel I believe started wobbling when I was about 45 MPH. I had to pull over and stop and when I started moving again it was gone and driving fine. My steering is a little stiff, but all the steering components look good and have been greased. I drove it some more and then accidently hit a pothole on the right side which caused it to start wobbling again and then it stopped and hasn't wobbled since.

Re: My 1987 IROC
Hi there,
Do you know if the steering parts have been replaced? Also ball joints? If they are all original, they are way overdue for replacement. I just got done doing all of mine (steering and suspension) and it wasn't too pricey, but a lot of work for a shade-tree mechanic. Still, better than the $1000 the shop wanted for the job. I think I wound up paying about $160 for the parts, just to give you a ballpark estimate.

Re: My 1987 IROC
I'm going to be checking the steering components and ball joints tonight. I don't know if any of those parts are original or not. They could be. If the steering components look fine then I won't mess with them for now. I plan on going with Moog steering parts (Which I put on my other Camaro and am happy with), but not ready to do that yet. Still looking at and deciding on other suspension components. If it is the ball joints I have two new ones on the shelf I'll try to get replaced this weekend so the car isn't down long.

Re: My 1987 IROC
I'm still not certain on the ball joints. From the tests I did I couldn't find anything wrong. I did however find that the center link has a bit of play at the pitman arm. I have ordered all new Moog steering components and should have them Tuesday or Wednesday. So once I get them on I'll see if that fixed the problem or not. If the problem is fixed then I can get a wheel alignment done. Tomorrow I will need to paint my wheel adapters black and get the shifter linkage adjusted in the right spot.
#195
Re: My 1987 IROC
I have the shifter linkage closer now. It still needs some more tweaking and I don't think it is going into first yet. I decided not to paint my wheel adapters since they look alright in aluminum. Maybe when I get my final set of wheels I'll paint them. I did order all new Moog steering components that I painted last night and will get installed tonight. I also ordered a Momo Millenium steering wheel and a 5/6 hole adapter off of EBay. Those steering wheels are hard to find especially at a decent price. I will be painting the aluminum of the steering wheel black when I get it. If I can remember I will get pictures of stuff.

Very nice. Please post the part numbers of the adapter(s) used. I've been looking at the MOMO wheels for a while also.

Here's a picture of the box. It looks like a pizza box.
This is the EBay link for the adapter I purchased. I haven't received it yet to make sure it will work, but it claims to fit this wheel. It is also a 5 and 6 hole adapter incase I change to something else in the future. Will give me the option for either style. It is a nice wheel. The leather and stitching look very nice and the grip is pretty good.

Re: My 1987 IROC
Got the steering and steering wheel installed over the weekend. Just need the two front tires I ordered and an alignment and that should finish up the steering project. I have pictures of the steering to post in a little bit. Here is the finished steering wheel installation.
