My 1987 IROC

Hello, I thought I would get started on my build thread. I recently purchased a 1987 IROC black with grey interior. All original except for the built transmission. So I've been told. Haven't checked into it yet. I haven't had a chance to do anything with the car yet besides make sure it runs and get a right front fender that was missing. I need to put the car back together and paint it. It has no rust and has been where it shows in the pictures for the last 12 years. Friends house who I bought it off of. Progress soon to come.

Re: My 1987 IROC

So been busy working on the IROC for the last few weeks. New fuel pump went bad. Ended up replacing it with new Delphi pump, took the fuel injectors out and cleaned them, new plugs and wires and got the new exhaust on. Now to work on the body.

Keep plugging away at it and soon you will see the end in sight. My build looks a lot like yours.

Re: My 1987 IROC

I'm hoping I can get to a good point on the body before I have to put it in storage for the winter. Working on the passenger fender this week and hoping to put it in this weekend. Then I can get the hood on. Car would technically be drivable at that point. After working on the fuel system that car runs great now.

Re: My 1987 IROC

UPDATE: I have the right fender ready to go on the car. So plan for the weekend. Get the oil changed and get the body back together. I'm on a quest to figure out the mileage of the thing. Here's the story so far with the car. I have the title from the owner before the one I bought the car from. He never did anything with it. So 1996 a guy bought the car with 17k miles on it. In about 2001 my friend bought it and parked it in his garage where it sat till now. Was not driven. The odometer today reads 57k. My friend that I bought it from thinks its 157k. I am trying to figure out if it is 57k or 157k. I've already read through other posts and stuff like the brake pedal and under hood and the engine condition while running are all great. No smoke or nothing. Smooth running. Some oil leaks, but I'm sure thats due to dry seals from sitting so long. The interior is a little saggy in places, but before 2001 the car sat outside and in the sun. It was never garage kept as far as I know. I'm still trying to track down the previous owner, but don't even know if they would remember since it was so long ago. I find it hard to believe that well over 100k was put on the car in as little as 5 years, but you never know. Anyone have any suggestions for anything else I can check?

Re: My 1987 IROC

This may sound kind of stupid but check the date codes on the tires. If the tires are '01ish or older but still have quite a bit of tread on them, them maybe the car is low mile. I look at my daily driver '06 silverado and I know it has 211k on it, but it doesn't show like it does. Unless you look at the brake pedal and the driver's seat lol!

Re: My 1987 IROC

I will have to look at the tires. The rear ones are getting a little bald, but I think the previous owner was doing some burnouts, lol. The fronts have more tread on them. I will report the results when I get over to the car next. I need to find a driver fender too. This has a new J.C. Whitney fender and I question the quality of the metal and I don't think it really fits to well. Not surprised there though. The fender came with the car. I don't know where the original one went.

Here is a picture of the odometer and pictures I took today after changing the oil and putting the right fender on.

Re: My 1987 IROC

I couldn't find date codes on the tires that are on there. They are constellation brand. The fronts look to have most of the tread left on them. The rears like I had said before are about bald due to the previous owner burning the tread off. I was hoping the odometer would help. I wasn't sure if the 5 would be in a different position on 57k vs 157k. Hoping someone will know.

Re: My 1987 IROC

Got an update on the mileage somewhat. I ran a limited VIN report and plan on doing a carfax in a week or so, but the car was bought new in Michigan with 13 miles on the OD. One year later the car had 8k miles on it. In 96 when the information states 17,500. The DMV put the title as EXCEEDS MECHANICAL LIMITS. Meaning it has over 100k miles on it. Has no reported accidents or any issues, but service records and title records I will have to get from the carfax to know for sure.

Re: My 1987 IROC

I know right, lol. That's part of what keeps throwing me off. The engine bay, chassis and interior look great for possibly having that many miles on it. I'm hoping there some sort of error on the title and that the carfax may shed some light on it. And again it could just be a high mile very well taken care of car. Maybe mostly highway mileage or something.

Re: My 1987 IROC

Usually the DMV will say EXCEEDS MECHANICAL LIMITS or similar verbage when a car speedometer has a limited number of digits available, has over 100,000 mi or is over a certain number of years old. It varies from state to state but they really only seem to worry about speedometer scams on newer cars.
Is having 57k or 157k a problem or do you just want to know?

Re: My 1987 IROC

Well I do have the car running great right now and all tuned up. Just in time for winter it looks like. I have a driver fender that should be here today or early next week. Once I get that I will get the fenders bolted down and the hood back on. Then I just piddle with stuff till I can work on painting the body in the spring. Thinking I'll just do a low gloss black primer for a while. I have to get my other Camaro painted first. For sitting 10 years the car seems to drive fine and the brakes seem to work good. I haven't been able to get it on the road since it's not legal yet, but have had room to drive around the storage unit.

Re: My 1987 IROC

I ran the Carfax Today and this is what I found out. Each listing of mileage was what the DMV reported. 87 iroc 13 miles new. This was on the book for the car from the original owners when they purchased it. Two years later in 89 it has 11k miles, one month later it has 700 more miles on it. Then 6 months after that it has 6k miles on it. so the mileage is at 17336 in 89. In 96 it shows 15 more miles on it. thats when the title is flagged as over 100k. So either the car was not driven in that time or it is over 100k. It had to be highway driven if thats the case, becuase of the condition of the car and probably not driven in winters.

Re: My 1987 IROC

Well not much of an update. The car is put away for the winter in storage. Regular storage so I won't be working it till spring. Wasn't able to get much more done with it, but at least it runs good again. Going to work on my second gen this winter since it is at the house in a heated garage. I have that build thread over at NastyZ28. So come spring time I should have some more pictures and updates.

Re: My 1987 IROC

Been a while since I've posted. I haven't done anything to the car since last fall. I did get out to the storage unit and start it up a few weeks ago. Runs great. Just wish I had time to get her put together and on the road. Hopefully soon.

Re: My 1987 IROC

Found out the middle of the door where it kind of comes to a point in the front hits the inside of the fender when opening or closing the door. Guess I just need to adjust the fenders forward just a hair.

Re: My 1987 IROC

No new update on the IROC, but I have my 2nd gen all ready to go for the summer. This is what has been keeping me to busy to work on the IROC. Just washed it now that it has the new PTFB Comp suspension, frame connectors, solid body mounts, ls1 rear disc brakes and new wheels and tires. Thought I would share a few pictures.

Re: My 1987 IROC

Got the IROC started Saturday morning for a while and got it pulled out of the storage to get some pictures. Still running pretty good. No smoke or oil leaks or any issues other than I think the water pump is going to go out soon. Its making noise and I need to tighten the transmission pan. It was leaking a little on the cardboard I noticed when I had it out.

Re: My 1987 IROC

Well, lol. I've been kind of putting this car on the back burner. I have an 80 I've been working on and getting ready to take the front suspension apart this winter to put tubular control arms and LS1 front brakes on it. I should be getting back to the IROC in the spring. I wish I had a garage spot for it at home so I could tinker with it when I'm not working on the other one.

Haha, yep. I've had a couple. Just this one right now. Got a deal on it a year ago and couldn't pass it up. It was the car I looked at when I got my 2nd gen. My friend had bought it and then sold it to me. The 2nd gen is why I haven't touched this one yet, lol.

That's cool. Your Z28 is getting close. The IROC runs great. Just need to put it back together and get some primer on it. Also the interior really needs a good cleaning.

I hope you'll post photos of that install / process. I'd love to see it.

Re: My 1987 IROC

Here are the items that are missing from this kit that I will be going to my local hardware store to get. The transmission control arm is missing as well, but you should be able to just use the stock one. Otherwise everything appears to be here. I got this information from the picture and instructions from Summit Racings web site for this model #292 0000.

Quantity 4 1/4-20x1/2 Hex head bolts
Quantity 3 1/4-20x13/16 U-type clip fastener
Quantity 1 1/4-20x1-1/4" J-type clip fastener

Re: My 1987 IROC

Too much, lol. More than I wanted to spend, but becuase of the rarity of the item I didn't want to loose out.
