Question about value...
My son and I are restoring an '86 IROC that is the original rare yellow. Paint is totally shot and will need to be repainted.
My question is will the value of the car be better if it's repainted the original color or does it really matter. I want to keep it stock and my son wants a more exciting color...
Thanks

I don't know man, A 86 Yellow IROC is a pretty exciting color to me!
On originality, stock color would be best. JMO
Let's see some pics!

Re: Question about value...
Depends on a host of factors. What paint you use, the quality of the paintjob, etc. On the other hand, it depends on how desirable the original yellow paint is. You may paint the car an entirely different color and fetch a higher price for it based on someone else's preferences. There's a always a huge difference between "what it's worth" and "what it actually sells for".

And if ANYBODY thinks ther're gonna "get rich quick" with a 3rd gen Camaro or Firebird, they need to find a different hobby. It ain't happening.
Build and paint the car and ENJOY IT!!

There are other factors to consider as well - are you modding the car, if so, color won't matter as much as if you are doing a stock restoration.
Yellow is rare, & I'm sure you will find a lot of guys here on the board who LOVE it, but it's rare because nobody ordered it. Take that for what it's worth.

Re: Question about value...
as the other guys have said, value is relative to what the buyer wants, this is especially true with the world of thirdgens
my opinion is you should restore it to factory original including the color, the yellow iroc's are going to catch a higher dollar amount than the same year/motor red or black counterparts
these cars are already increasing in value since i started my obsession in 2006, you could find $500-1000 thirdgens running and driving back then, you might find one in that ballpark today, but it wont be in the condition it was 10 years ago, my buddy got a Red 1LE back then for pretty much offering to take it off the owners hands
all in all its up to you, if you plan to keep the car forever than do as you please and enjoy it, if you plan on holding it until prices skyrocket(we still aren't talking 60's muscle money here) then restore to original and someone will appreciate it one day

Re: Question about value...
The color of the engine bay to me plays a roll in the over all color of the car.
I would not want a black or red car with a yellow engine bay.
That being said, if you decided to re paint the car yellow there are a few nice alternatives to stock yellow colors.
Maybe something a little deeper with black accents will make it look more aggressive for your son.
Keep in mind any decent paintjob done right with quality materials is not cheep. $$$

Re: Question about value...
Well, almost three years later and she's done. I decided to go with 2010 Camaro Rally Yellow. Did a lot of reading and research and painted her myself in my garage. Boy is she purdy...

Re: Question about value...
Thanks! Considering what I started with.
Interior is all done too. New door panels, carpet, headliner. All plastics repainted. Seats are decent but going to have Princess at Lethal Interiors do some covers for my old seats over the winter.

Re: Question about value...
Oh, and it's not my son's car anymore. He didn't have much interest in turning a wrench or working on it so I took control of it. He's happy with his little Subaru.. I don't get kids these days. When I was his age I would have spent every waking hour working on a cool car if it was going to be mine.. Oh well, he's a straight "A" student so I can't complain...

Re: Question about value...
He doesn't care what he's driving as long as it gets him from A to B. He's into computers and stuff. Oh well, he wants to major in electrical engineering so I can't bitch. He might get in in my will someday...
And thanks Flipper, I love it!

Re: Question about value...
My oldest son didn't show much interest in a very nice 86 Monte Carlo I gave him. So I got him a Camry when he started college. He is out of college making good $ and still driving it. If I was single making the kind of $ he is at 21yrs old I would have some kind of bada$$ ride.
