Just bought another '86

I found it on Craig'sList yesterday, about an hour after it was posted, and now I own it. A red '86 Camaro Sport Coupe, hardtop ( yes! ) 305 / auto.
Someone decided on tall chrome valve covers, thereby creating a wiring short I gotta fix to drive it home.
It also seems to need a fuel pump replacement to drive it home.
The wheels are cheap chrome 8-spoke steelies, about as way wrong as you can get.
And it has a Carter carb on it.
So I have no idea what to expect for cam, heads, pistons, axle gears, or torque converter, I hope all that stuff is still stock.
I'm going after it Saturday, so pics in a week

Definitely going to copy the old Chevy Raceshop "Emissions Mouse" '87 Camaro, but I'm not using a real ZZ4.

Re: Just bought another '86

As soon as I discovered the 45-tooth driven speedometer gear I'd need for 3.73s is becoming difficult to obtain, I ordered the cheapest one I could find. I'm not even 100% sure yet that I'm going with 3.73s, but it was only $13.

Re: Just bought another '86

Also, I realize the legal ZZ4 conversion has been overshadowed and surpassed by the E-Rod LS3, but the cost, even faking ANY E-Rod LSx is still at least triple the cost of the fake ZZ4

Re: Just bought another '86

No progress due to moving my family into an unfinished home. Using up all my time and all my money, no surprise.
I have a good used chambered muffler with 3" right inlet and a 2.5" outlet on each side, and shiny 3" tips, but why install it to a single 2.25" over-axle pipe?
With funds tight it looks wiser every day to swap the 2.73s for the 3.42s I already have rather than wait for 3.73s, and likewise try a cheap, common, generic 204-214 420/442 112+5 rather than try to save up nearly twice as much for the Lunati 213-219.

Re: Just bought another '86

Placed a bid on a used Performer EGR, fingers crossed.
Seems silly to spend on a big name cam for a 305 when it will be replaced with an 87-up 350 for a fake zz4, so the generic 204/214 is growing on me.

Re: Just bought another '86

Got the used Performer EGR, have a CCC QJet and a large-cap CCC HEI, the A.I.R. system is in place, as is the cat, so all it needs is intake gaskets and a carb rebuild kit to pass emissions

Re: Just bought another '86

Maybe I should rename this thing Jekyll and Hyde, just make the 305 the emissions engine, then the rest of the time run a Vortec 350 with a healthy 226/234 111 480/498 cam.
When I tried the comp 12-388-4 cam in my L69, it pulled 19" vac at idle, but when I ran a generic 204/214 112 in a 350 in my 84 LG4 Camaro, it idled poorly. So for my current LG4 I think either a generic 194/204-112, or because this is supposed to be a 9.5:1, maybe a comp 12-249-4. But I am above 4000' so that 9.5:1 is more like 9:1 at sea level

Re: Just bought another '86

Upgrade time, finding it easier to progress on this one, about to order a bunch of new parts, even as plans keep changing. This 305 May end up in my S-10, but I'm about to order a carb kit, a cam kit, a timing set, a gasket set, and front struts.

Re: Just bought another '86

Actually, she gave me the money I just spent. Things are ok on the family side, so here's what I ordered and why, as much for my own future reference as for anyone flowing along.
I ordered the Lunati 214/224-112. It's advertised as a 280/290. I've tried the Sum-K1102 in a 350 and didn't love it, the idle wasn't good, the torque below 2000 wasn't good, and it had no top-end. But the midrange was good. Much the same with a Comp 12-388-4 in an L69 I had. I've tried a Sum-K-1103 in a 350, the idle was good. I was going to go with the Lunati 204/214-112 installed 4 degrees delayed to be more like a stock L69, but a 305 isn't worth buying 2 cams for, and is short on power. I already have 3.42:1 axle gears to install, and much as I don't believe advertised duration matters, this one I just bought is within 2 degrees of the K-1102.
Googling found me plenty to suggest that this one can pass emissions, and evidence that the 1102 is safe with a stock LG4, but nothing about this one in an LG4, so I'll be the first to try it and report.
I'll be doing exhaust upgrades and a looser torque converter in August, so the compromise will be short-lived.

Re: Just bought another '86

Yesterday I scored a thermac air cleaner off an old caddy, got a lid off a tbi Silverado, and grabbed the connectors off another LG4 for my carb and dizzy, just in case. I'm feeling confident about passing the visual inspection, but not sure if the original catalytic converter still works. If not then I have a good excuse to upgrade all the sooner, but it isn't in the budget yet.

Re: Just bought another '86

While visiting my mom's farm, I found my 7.625" 3.42:1 gears, and my 7.625" 28-spline Gov-Lock, but the only 28-spline shafts I have are in my '94 Camaro, and my budget won't accommodate finding a used pair of '91-'92 shafts, so I popped the cover off the '94,which has over 300,000 miles on it.
Based on what I found, my short term plan is to pass inspection with the 2.73:1 rear, then swap the Gov-Lock into the '94 3.23:1 rear axle assembly and run that, with it's very-worn 245/50R16s that might not pass inspection but will serve safely for now.
While driving that I can be worrying about getting the '86 axle ready.

Re: Just bought another '86

Got the top-end apart, confirmed it is an '86 305 with #416 heads, 1-piece rear main seal, and no provisions for roller lifters nor their "spider".
I got a new Cloyes 3-key double roller timing set, but i settled on just running the 5 degrees of advance Lunati ground into the cam.
Haven't fired it up yet, but probably this Saturday.

Re: Just bought another '86

Thought it would be easiest to break in the new cam and lifters using an Edelbrock carb and a pre-computer HEI, but while i did get it fired, with no helper, in trying to get it to stay running long enough to get out and adjust things with it idling, i killed the starter.
So, i ordered one for a 1995 Z28, because LT1 versions are smaller and lighter.

Decent idle, but wrong cam, even with 9.5;1, next will be a Comp 12-235-2 installed 4* delayed.

Bought a rattle-can of Rust-Oleum red, hoping it's better than Krylon, and sprayed my hood after removing the louvers. Not a great match, but better than when the hood was white. It isn't huge progress, but it's something.

On 1/1/17, this car becomes emissions-exempt here. Didn't know that until last week.

Re: Just bought another '86

I' m now earning good money, and trying to decide what to buy first. I really want the Edelbrock C66-O, especially since i have a pair of Edelbrock carbs, which are shorter than QJets, the C66-O is only 0.5" taller than a Torker 2-O, and the C66-O makes 25 hp more than the T2-O and 30 tq more than the Performer. Besides, how many street cars have dual quads these days?
Leaning toward a Comp marine HR 218/224-112 510/510 cam, and while i haven't yet disassembled my own pair, the Google images of these heads show they desperately need a lot of help in the exhaust ports. I will be grinding in mine.

Re: Just bought another '86

Minimal progress, but I got a matching set of near-new 225/60R15 tires on the steel 15x7 5-slots, I have a good used set of 3.42:1 gears to replace the 2.73s, just need a diff or some 28-spline shafts, preferably, I have new KYB struts ready to install, and I sprayed the white IROC hood red.
While removing the other louver for that, I found it already broken in 3 pieces.
I have spotted a black IROC-Z nearby, just sitting in a lot, 2 flat tires, on the left, window open on the right, t-tops. I don't want it, and it isn't for sale, but it bothers me to see it like that.
I also spotted a white 91-92 Z28 t-top, but with a red 85-87 nose and hood, plus that hood is bent, and not closed. Again, just sitting.
I understand waiting for disposable funds, but how much carelessness does it take to not even tarp over a window, or close a hood? It's like they want to destroy their cars, and give a middle finger to anyone who could and would save these gems.
A neighbor I don't know has a gray 85-88 Firebird sitting waiting, but the tires are all aired up, the windows are both up, no leaves accumulating in the wiper area, it just takes 5 minutes a week to keep the thing salvageable.

Spend too much time looking at pics of Firebird Formulas, you might be able to see this as a Camaro Formula in progress? But I'm sticking with the 454SS plan for this car.
