finally painted my convertible!
Well guys, I got my 91 Trans Am convertible painted after owning it for over 7 months. I got it back in August of 2009 from a guy on this board up in New Hampshire for $2800. It was kinda rough, had rust and just needed some general TLC but now she looks a million times better. Still not perfect but I love it.
Some of the work done included:
*new fuel injectors (engine would barely run before)
*stopped rusty floor boards with Chassis Saver
*cleaned engine bay a little
*and random other stuff, check the link in my sig.

Re: finally painted my vert!
After:
Fortunately the interior wasn't a whole lot dirtier when I just got it.
I still would like to do a bunch of other stuff:
*new tires
*new top (current one is OK but time for a new one)
*factory Trans Am decals plus giant hood bird
*full exhaust, headers-back
*3.23-3.42 disc rear end
and much much more. Like most thirdgens, it'll be a never ending project lol.
I also have an entire front end rebuild ready for it, I just gotta find time to put the parts in. Those include fresh KYB GR2 struts, ball joints, steering links, and some other stuff... all Moog parts.
It's a pretty car, but I'm not afraid to drive it, in fact it became my DD for spring-fall. 99,700 miles and counting.

That looks awesome! I love dark green metallic with gold trim. That new set of gold T/A decals you mentioned is really gonna look sick on the new paint. Really nice car!

Re: finally painted my convertible!
Thanks for the kind words guys! And I forgot to post a close up of my smoothed fender vents. I always like the look of the fender vents on the pre-91 Trans Ams so I got them for mine. But with my aftermarket fenders, the fit and finish of the vents was so terrible that I just trimmed them down and smoothed them with body filler for a one-piece look.
^^ I washed the car earlier but made the mistake of letting it air dry so there are those ugly vapor spots. Gotta wash it the right way next time!

Looks good..You have put alot of work into it..Dont be suprised if the filler you used around the fender vents starts to shrink or crack soon though..

I like the gold screens in your fender vents. Might have to steal your idea!

Re: finally painted my convertible!
Oh wow! I paid $1500 for my paint job, except I did most of the prep work which involved taking the car apart, sanding it down, and fixing most dents.

Re: finally painted my convertible!
Yeah everybody tells me I got that paint job for a steal. It seems to be professional work, coat of primer, then a guide coat, the car was blocked off and most dents were fixed, then sealed, then base coat and clear coat.

Re: finally painted my convertible!
Thank you! It's definitely a head turner, and little kids think it's a ferrari or something lol. I hardly see any third gens around where I live, let alone any convertibles. The closest I've seen to my car was a white 91-92 firebird convertible that I saw parked at a gas station in west hartford I believe. And most of the third gens that I do see are regular commuters and they're mostly 90-92 Camaro RS's... but I love em all.

Re: finally painted my convertible!
I really like the seamless fender vents! did you put them higher than stock? I wanted to have mine smoothed but the shop wasn't comfortable going seamless from plastic to steel, saying it would eventually crack. I even looked into getting some fabricated in steel, but couldn't find someone local willing to do it.

Re: finally painted my convertible!
those must be 82-84 vents cuz mine go almost behind the GFX...
im going to have a buddy build me some out of steel and weld them in. I thought about the cracking before as well and if its thin, you shouldnt have any problems.

Re: finally painted my convertible!
Maybe that's the reason why the fitment of the vents was so terrible? I wonder if the 85+ vents would've fit nicer. And yes unfortunately the 90+ temps here took a toll on this crap and there are some cracks. Ugh I'm so pissed about that. It's not too noticeable but I'm gonna have to do something about it.

Re: finally painted my convertible!
Nope that's the stock screen with square holes... I guess they just look round in the photo. I just pulled them off of the vents and sprayed them gold with some spray paint during reassembly.

if you go on mcmaster.com and look up perforated metal, you can get it in all different designs including circles and hexagons.
