88 Trans Am comes home....

History : I bought this car brand new from the dealer a lifetime ago. I was young, had hair, and could just swing a new car loan.
It was originally a 305/5spd car. Medium Maui blue. Pretty much base other than that. No AC, Rear drums. I began to tinker with it in the early 90's and ended up swapping in a 6 speed, 350 motor, IRS, and a few other things. Had a lot of fun and met some great people with this car.
Sold it to a friend in the late 90's as my life had changed and I had moved across country. The new owner did a few mods but the car retained its soul.
Alas, A few years ago he had a bad crash on a motorbike and is now in a wheelchair. So the car has been sitting neglected for a long time. Its pretty rough now. I have taken it into my possession and am working to get it running again, maybe will fix a few things to see if it can be great again. Thanks for this site, I will be looking around here for resto tips. And parts !

Heres some pics. First one is a poor pic of the car from its glory days, next pics are how it looks now

Those headlights in the second pic look interesting, in a good way. Any info on em? Do they work well.

Re: 88 Trans Am comes home....

Sweet. Question, You said the car you bought new was plain with no AC. in the pic of the engine, there is clearly AC in the car. Sure its the one you bought back in the day?

Re: 88 Trans Am comes home....

I made those headlights back in the '90s. They are aluminum sheet frame with a lexan cover. I used a small sealed beam for the low beam and a projector type for the high.
As to the AC, I added it on from wrecker yard parts a few years after I got it. Added power locks too.

C4 Corvette Dana 44 IRS setup. I think this was one the first such swaps to be done.

It's great you were able to get the car back after all those years. Good looking car.

Re: 88 Trans Am comes home....

That's an Edelbrock tunnel ram converted to port injection. That was back when there weren't a lot of choices in fuelie intakes.

Re: 88 Trans Am comes home....

Thanks for the compliments. I am not sure what to do with this car. Got too many projects on the go already. It was kindof dropped in my lap due to the previous owners situation. It needs a bunch of work inside and out. That black fender is an aftermarket part and fits like $hit. I am trying to locate an OEM part now.

Re: 88 Trans Am comes home....

LOL! I got a fender from classics for my camaro and its fitment was as if it was a fender off a Model T. NO where near close. Pass fender... If you find a good place to find fenders, Please let us know!! I almost at the point of getting new ones for 350-400 depending on what side..
