New to te forum, new firebird owner

I just picked up a 1989 Firebird Formula V8 fo my sons' first ride when he turns 16 next year. The car is in "good" running condition, but, does need a few things. My goal is to ensure that the car is "safe" and "reliable". Hopefully, if he decides to make "upgrades" he can do that later. My immediate concerns are: 1) new buttons for seat belts (never had the recall repair), 2) new tires, 3) inspect and relace brakes where needed front/back, 4) tune-up, 5) exhaust inspection (pipes/muffle looks good, need to verfy cat working properly) 6) steering and suspenion (ride and sits nice, so i am thinking everything is ok). Looking to use the forum to help answer questions, find advise, and posibly locate parts. I am not concerned with restoring to make accurate. Just having a fun, safe, first car for my boy.

Re: New to te forum, new firebird owner

Yes welcome! You definitely picked the right car

Be on the lookout for TPI issues if they haven't been dealt with yet. Fuel pump, injectors and regulator are the usual suspects. Fuel pressure is very important but unfortunately the computer does not read it so it cannot tell you pressure is good or bad. A cheap pressure gauge from HF will be your friend sooner or later. Keep us posted!

Hey brother welcome to the page! This is truly a awesome place. I am from mid Michigan and i recently created a Facebook page to localize the trade and buy market for third gens, since Facebook is huge with the barter and man stuff pages, my page has had quite a bit of activity! The page is called "Michigan third gen or die buy/sell/trade. Feel free to invite others!

Welcome aboard

I don't know how practical it is for you in Michigan in term of shipping costs for parts from this place where I get all my F-Body parts, Classic Industries.com because even though I'm only about 25 miles away from them. I still pay a nice amount for shipping when I don't want to go pick the parts up myself.

My 92 Camaro was my first car (15 years ago). The low power and great handling i'm sure was a good balance to keep me safe despite all the stupid stuff i did behind the wheel. Here we are 15 yrs later, the car and I survived it all and are tearing up the autoX course. That Formy probably has a little more go fast than my RS.

I don't know if the Formulas got them or not but i recommend a wonder bar for sure. Here is the one I bought. http://www.top-downsolutions.com/cha...or-firebird-(a
Subframe connectors are a nice touch.

I love these wheels on the formulas. http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/r1...-reproduction/
Those wheels with some 275/40R17's would significantly increase handling.
